Just over 5 weeks pregnant... miscarriage?

Hi all,

Hopefully someone here can help us... I've read some posts but I have trouble deciphering half the shorthand on here so thought I'd ask a question!

We recently found out that my wife is pregnant, she's had 3 positive home tests. All was fine until today when she's basically got most of the symptoms of a full period... Heavy bleeding etc.

Does we need to go Dr's? We're not sure what we're supposed to do now?

Any advice welcome...

I'm so sorry you're going through this I think an urgent doctor's visit is in order- they may refer you to an early pregnancy centre for a scan

It's advisable to go to the doctors or the early pregnancy unit as she may or may not have miscarried and if she has sadly lost the baby there could be remaining tissue which would need removing.

Ok thanks for the replies, we'll be making a trip to the GP tomorrow...

Ok, another question please everyone... she's now in quite a bit of discomfort (although no more than 'the usual'), I assume she's ok to take painkillers as usual?

I feel a bit dumb asking, but this stuff don't come with a manual...

She can take paracetamol. In case this isn't a miscarriage I would avoid ibuprofen. Unfortunately at this early stage there's nothing can be done to prevent miscarriage if its happening. She can wait it out and make a GP appointment but it if she develops severe pain or bleeds very heavily/become very pale/faints you need to take her to the emergency department.

'Heavy' bleeding is soaking through a pad or tampon in an hour or less. I would suggest avoiding tampons anyway in case it is a miscarriage as could increase infection risk. If she is in pain, pale or just seems really unwell as has been said then don't hesitate, get help. Keep her warm and a hot water bottle might help with the cramping too.

Sorry I should have said, sorry to read you're facing this. It's just something that happens in some pregnancies, neither of you will have done anything wrong to cause it and chances are you will have a successful pregnancy in the future.
