Waiting to miscarry - what to expect?

I am 7+6 after 3 yrs ttc and a round of ivf. Yesterday. I had a scan that showed the sac was empty, no embryo has developed. I have to go to GP and EPU today.

I have no idea what happens next - I'm shocked to read so many stories where women have waited weeks for the miscarriage to actually start. As part of ivf I've been taking progesterone which the nurse said would have been sustaining the pregnancy. I've been signed off work for two weeks, but I'm worried it could be weeks until my hormones settle and my body works out what is going on.

Any advice on what is coming and how to cope welcome.

I'm so sorry Potatoes - how incredibly difficult for you. How did your appointments at GP & EPU go? Were they able to give you any more information on how to manage the practical side of things?

I'm afraid I don't have much advice aside from giving yourself time to heal emotionally and being kind to yourself, but didn't want to read and run

Sorry to hear about your mc . I am also in the same boat and found out today baby measures 6w and was meant to be 9w5d. I've also had spotting on and off.

I kind of knew things weren't right so I'm not in too much shock...

I saw my doctor this morning and she organised hormone levels to be checked and advised that the loss will start when your levels decrease to a certain point. She said give it a week to see if it occurs naturally, then see the hospital for advice for D&C if that is what I want. I'm not sure what I want yet but I don't want to be waiting weeks either.

Are you willing to wait a period of time to see if it starts on its own? I know some people prefer to have a D&C straight away.

Thanks ladies. Went to the EPU today. They were supportive of moving quickly and would have done a d&c tomorrow except that they're busy, so booked for Tuesday unless it happens naturally before then. With an empty sac I've essentially already "waited" about four weeks and nothing has happened so they were OK to move fast.

I've only just found your thread but I too went for my scan on 17th and had no heartbeat. I was 14 weeks but the baby had stopped developing at 8 weeks.

I went home to wait for the miscarriage to happen naturally, but after two days I couldn't cope with the waiting. I felt really anxious and emotional and wasn't sleeping so I went back to the hospital on Friday and had the pills to bring it on.

Friday night and Saturday morning were horrendous, I couldn't believe the pain! Luckily my partner was with me all the way through and thank god he was because I found the pain very difficult and quite frightening.

I've now had a week off work and the bleeding stopped yesterday so I am feeling better and planning to return to work on Monday. I was just wondering how your recovery is going? And if you had a better experience having a natural miscarriage or a d&c, not that any experience is pleasant but maybe not so painful!

I think the emotional side is just as bad in any case. Our baby wasn't planned and was our first pregnancy, but the loss is very difficult to deal with!

Hi Alice, sorry for your loss. I hope the mc is over for you now. The waiting is not very nice is it? I have been waiting about 10 days and not even any bleeding or signs is is about to start. I am booked in for D&C on monday. A bit nervous but I know it'll be good for me as I'll be able to move on. I feel like life is a bit on hold right now.

I'm home and recovering, thanks for asking, all went smoothly. I'll be back to work next week. alice so sorry to hear your experience. pineapple the d&c was the right thing for me, I hope it works out for you. Quick, painless, home fast and body recovers well. A tip I was given - take wet wipes to the hospital with the rest of your kit. Some degree of cleaning up may be necessary at some point (was for me!)

Hi Potatoes, really glad to hear D&C went well for you and you're back home and recovering. Thanks for the wet wipes tip, shall pack some now. I am thinking an extra pair of pants too and pads? Feeling a bit nervous now and hoping I manage to get some sleep tonight.

Hi all. I learnt yesterday at 9 weeks that I've had a MMC. Baby had stopped growing around 7 weeks, sadly it seems literally just after we saw a healthy-looking heartbeat at an early scan.
Devastated doesn't begin to cover it. Like you potatoes this was an IVF baby after over 2 years TTC so it all feels so hopeless.

I'll be going to the doctor on Mon for referral to EPU and just want to get it all over with. So scared of the physical and emotional pain of miscarrying naturally so think ERPC is best option for me. Those who have sadly had to go through it, would you recommend? Is it ok? I'm not usually bad with surgical stuff (had a hysteroscopy last year plus egg collection etc and coped fine) but this is a whole other thing and my head is all over the place.
to you all. So sad that we're all having to go through it. But thank you for sharing advice and experience as it really helps.

Hi ladies. I don't know if I'm too late in a response for grumple but I wanted to share my story. I have 3 healthy kids, last yr I suffered a blighted ovum. I decided on surgical management as I couldn't bare to sit around and wait for the mc to kick in. I found it better for me as it's over with without the agony of naturally passing it. I don't know if it helps the emotional side any but I think makes it easier when your not in so much pain.
I had a scan to wks ago to see a lovely little heartbeat, only to be told yesterday that the heartbeat isn't there anymore. Devastated doesn't come close. I asked for the surgical management again as I just want to get it over with. It sounds heartless but I don't mean it to. I'm booked in for Friday. Seems so far away and I'm wondering if with the cramps I'm having if it's going to happen sooner. I'm scared of what is to come and would much prefer to be asleep when it all comes to an end.

Hi all, I'm brand new here and looking for a bit of support.

I should be almost 10 weeks, but found out today that my pregnancy ended about 4 weeks ago. I'm booked in for surgery tomorrow but have just started bleeding fairly heavily.

Not sure what will happen and feeling pretty scared. Hubby is brilliant but neither of us have been here before. If anyone has any pearls of wisdom please feel free to share x :-(
