Thyroid and miscarriage

I am currently in the process of my 5th miscarriage and was diagnosed with over-active thyroid after my 3rd mc.
I was lucky enough to have my son on my 5th pregnancy (after medication controlled my thyroid) and this was our first attempt at TTC #2 however I have been advised to have a thyroidectomy and I have to decide whether to have the surgery before or after TTC.

Has anyone else had any experience with regards to thyroid and miscarriage? I'm really not sure whether to have surgery first or not?!?!

Sorry to hear you've had to go through 5 miscarriages.

I'm afraid I don't have much advice as I'm hypo not hyper.

What treatment and support were you in for your successful pregnancy? Would it be worth contacting the doctor who looked after you then for an opinion?

It's so hard because the world of medicine is so disjointed. No one seems open to discussing the impact of one body part on another

No personal experience but a friend had overactive thyroid and was advised the meds she was on for it weren't safe for TTC so to have thyroid treated first. She had radio-iodine then had to use contraception for 6 months after, and go on thyroxine (which is safe in pregnancy) you need v close monitoring of TSH in early pregnancy to keep it in the normal range and a dose increase as soon as you get a BFP. She had two miscarriages, one of which was possibly due to inadequate thyroid control (the other def genetic) then two children, the second baby had thyroid issues in the neonatal period as a result of her treatment in pregnancy but was just monitored and it settled down.
Have your MC been linked to your thyroid disease? I'm familiar with under active thyroid or autoantibodies being linked to recurrent miscarriage but not overactive thyroid. did you have other testing done?
Quite apart from the thyroid issue if you need some tea and sympathy for your losses I can't recommend the recurrent miscarriage threads highly enough, they are a wonderful bunch.

Although the drs can't say for definite, they are almost certain my thyroid levels and the antibodies I was producing caused a number of my earlier 4 miscarriages. My antibody levels were negative and my thyroid controlled well during my 5th pregnancy (my DS), with blood tests every 4 weeks.
This mc is more than likely genetic as all levels are within range.

I can't have the radio treatment due to having my young son and with my work. Following my son they tried me with no meds to see if the thyroid had corrected itself and within a week I was becoming seriously ill so have had to wait a further year for my levels to return to normal.

Luckily my son has no thyroid issues, and my endocrinologist has suggested I have the thyroidectomy to make me under active within the next year but I would have liked to ttc before then, I'm just not sure if its worth the risk or not yet.
