This might be a ridiculous thought but before they take you down for the procedure, do they do a final scan to make sure the heartbeat is missing?

I had this confirmed to me by two Sonographers yesterday and I even saw the baby motionless in the sac before she realised it was bad news and switched the monitor off.

But I still would prefer them to scan me again before they operate. Do they do this anyway? Can I request it even though I know I'm being totally ridiculous?

I had mine Done under local anaesthetic rather than general and yes, she scanned and showed me what she was seeing immediately before the procedure.

Some do, some don't. I know they didn't in my last one but I had had 3 scans by then (one showed h/b but far too slow and embryo too small , two showed h/b had stopped) so there was no need.
You absolutely can ask, but response may depend on local policy.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I wasn't scanned immediately before my ERPC because I'd had several scans over the preceding weeks which confirmed that there was no heart beat.

Unfortunately for me the ERPC didn't work and I had to have another two weeks later. I think this is very rare though. Don't want to scare you but I remember being so shocked by it. I'm sure the doctor told me that there was a risk of it having to be repeated but when you're in such an emotional black hole it sometimes doesn't sink in.

I really hope all goes smoothly for you and sorry again for your loss . X

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had 3 mc's with 2 of those ERPC's.

ERPC 1 (for mc2) it was obvious it wasn't viabLe because of amount of blood but they still scanned, and nothing.

ERPC 2 I'd had a silent MC and my scan showed no heartbeat, after a previous one had. I opted for ERPC and I was offered another scan to check for definite. However it meant waiting another week and I couldn't bear the agony of waiting so I asked them how confident they were the baby had died and they replied 100% and the scan was for my benefit rather than to check conclusively.

The thought of waiting another week and having my hopes dashed I couldn't bear it. The fact they were confident was enough for me. I just needed it over.

After my op I read my discharge notes and the they read the sac was correct at 10 wks but baby had stopped growing at 6 wks. I knew then I'd done the right thing.

And for me ERPC's were absolutely the right thing to do. Minimal pain and bleeding and waking up and it was over. Yes, as above, it can remain and need doing again but if I'm unlucky enough to have MC number 4, I'd do an ERPC again.

I'm so so sorry for your loss. Hugs xx
