really confused :(

Hi all,

I have just left the hospital and am totally and utterly confused.

I found out that I was pregnant on 16 December, but unfortunatly on the 24 December I started cramping and bleeding so I went to the hospital and they told me I'm most likely having a miscarriage. They did a pregnancy test that came up with a really faint positive line and blood test that came up with hcg levels of 21 and 5. I was told that it looks like it's happening naturally and to do another pregnancy test in a weeks time which should then be negative.

So a week passed and I did another test and still got the same faint positive line again. Called the hospital and they said do another one in a further week, which I did, and yet again it had the same result. The hospital told me to come in for a blood test yesterday (12 December) and the results have come back with increased hcg levels of 191 and 51. They did a scan as they suspected an etopic pregnancy but couldn't see anything.

I've now been told I have to go in for another blood test tomorrow and depending on how that comes back I will be advised further. I have no bleeding or pain, and my husband and I have only been intimate once about 3 days ago so it can't be that I've conceived again.

I'm really confused and feeling rather down as I have no idea what's goin on.

Anyone been in a similar situation that could shed some light at all please?

oh and I should add that I was about 6 weeks when I miscarried...

Sorry to hear that m2 it's adding insult to injury when it is dragged out. Hope you get some clarity tomorrow.

I am so sorry ladym2,

The same thing happened to me last year, did a test early January that came positive, 2 weeks later I had a bit of blood wiping so went to my epu, I should have been about 6/7 weeks but they couldn't see anything on the scan,

My hcg were really low but for 2/3 weeks kept increasing so they didn't do anything even though still nothing on the scan.

I had a final result that it was over early march, it was a nightmare especially as they were saying that as I am not in pain they won't do anything apart from checking hcg every 2/3 days.

I hope they will let you know what is happening much quicker, so you know where you stand

Caillou, that sounds exacly like me. So yours wasn't an ectopic? That's what they keep going on about which is what is getting me really worried

To this day, I have no idea what it was, I was told they suspected ectopic but nothing was never found on the scan.

So it might have been but I cannot and will never 100% sure know what happened

I see, thank you Caillou... gosh, not good is it, the not knowing... I've read that ectopic pregnancies can resolve by themselves so trying not to worry too much, although it's harder said than done

I've now started experiencing some mild pains on my left hand side, don't know if it's just because I'm over analysing or whether its a cause for concern... :( will tell them when I go for the blood test this eve...

If you are still in pain, the advice is to go to a&e (it was last year for me)

Ectopic can be serious.

Give your epu a call for advice.

I went to the hospital yesterday eve and they said that my levels were too low for them to be too concerned about it rupturing if it is in fact ectopic.

The doctor on call gave my belly a feel and said it feels fine, I had no pain when she did this weirdly.

They are going to give me a call today with the blood test results. I'm praying that the levels have gone down but for some reason I don't think they will have... Im having a really hard time with this

I've just been told that my hcg levels have gone up from 191 to 230 in 48 hours so they want me to go back in tomorrow for another scan...

I hope your scan went ok,

My hcg level kept increasing too but the level was much lower than yours (think under 100)

Thank you for checking in. So I had the scan and they still couldn't see anything to suggest ectopic but they did see a cyst on my left hand side that was bleeding a bit which explains the pains I'm getting. The lady doing the scan (a specialist I was told) said if it is ectopic then chances are it will pass by itself given that they can see anything and my levels r still low. The nurse said they've spoken to the consultant and she thinks we need to give my body some time so she said to wait till Tuesday to do another blood test. I feel much less stressed and worried as it seems its not as high risk as it seemed

That's the frame of mind I was in the end, "whatever is meant to happen, will happen"

The going to hospital frequently was what was getting to me at the end, I just wanted it to be over.

Yeah exactly, I was going insane fretting about it. Thing is, the nurse ran through a bunch of things it could be and one of them was that it could be a new pregnancy (we were only intimate once on the 11th before all this drama started which I now regret) so now it's even more confusing!

I hope everything will sort itself out for you soon. I had the same happening nearly 1 1/2 years ago. Was 5 wks, started spotting, little bit of blood the next day, but no pains...and certainly no gushing or anything. I had initially been to A&E and was then referred to EPU. They did blood tests and levels had dropped, then bounced up again, dropped a little, went back up...scan didn't show anything. I know the nurse tried to be helpful, but she actually got me rather worried and stressed.
After two weeks, I got to see a consultant. She mentioned ectopic and that they were considering using medication to flush out whatever was left. It didn't get to that, though. I left the country and attended two very boozy weddings abroad (one of which was my own). When we got back, the pregnancy test finally showed up negative. My actual AF returned two or three weeks later. As long as there's no pain, I'd just give it time to resolve itself. Similar to Caillou, I dreaded going to the EPU...especially since sitting opposite couples cooing over their scan pictures didn't particularly help.

I completely agree, all the nurses have made me much more worried about this than I'm sure I need to be. I know they have to cover their backs but I've been petrified all week and only the lady that did the 2nd scan finally put my mind at ease (somewhat).

How intersting, maybe I need to go and have a good time away too! :)

Tell me about it, I realised I'd been at the hospital every day last week apart from Thursday, pretty fed up of going :(

Yeah I think this just needs time hopefully... I've got another blood test tomorrow, will keep you guys posted

So my levels have gone from 230 to 380 :(. They did another scan yesterday and said that they saw a tiny little blob in my left tube. The sonographer said it could be ectopic but its the smallest one shes ever seen if it is. she said she couldnt see a sac or a fetus or free fluid which is all positive. she also said something along the lines of it looking like its dissolving. the cyst that was there previously has gone... they want me to come in for another blood test today but are now starting to talk about the injection. ive gone back to being stressed and worried about the whole thing, dont know whether to continue trying to see this out or just go for the injection :(

Have your specialists discussed the possibility of molar pregnancy with you? This is a rare condition wherein there was never a viable pregnancy but certain cells keep growing and producing the pregnancy hormone, whilst also causing it to rise. It can also cause small cysts to form in the ovaries as well as bleeding/spotting. From what I could take from all the info I read this week it can be harder to spot in early stages of pregnancy but if you feel as though you are putting on any 'pregnancy' weight and are still producing positive tests this might be a possibility.

This, like I say, is rare and I don't know enough about it to tell you if any of your other circumstances are relevant, however the prognosis for this condition (also known as gestational trophoblastic disease) is absolutely excellent; anyway, you might want to mention it to your nurses or doctors and see if they can rule it out for you :). By the way I'm really not trying to scare you or say that it is a molar preg., I am definitely not a healthcare professional!

I'm so sorry you're having such a hard and difficult time with this, the unknowing is very difficult to handle. I can't imagine how hard this must be for you lady and I really hope you can find some clarity in the situation soon, so you can properly deal with the emotional implications of what you're going through without all the confusion.
