Sick note for miscarriage?

Hi there - I'm currently on my 3rd early miscarriage. With previous ones I've taken a couple of days off either side of a weekend, then gone back to work.

This one feels different - the bleeding is as heavy as it was at the beginning, 5 days in, and I feel very low. Feeling low is probably a combination of this being my 4th pregnancy loss in the space of two years and pressure I'm feeling at work (I currently have a very difficult customer I'm trying to manage).

Yesterday I called in sick, today I'm working from home to finish something off for said difficult customer, tomorrow and Thursday I have hospital appointments in the middle of the day. But I really want to be signed off sick for the week so that I can just forget about work for a few days and deal with everything in my head, rather than having to explain to everyone where I am, deal with people etc.

Would a week off sick be reasonable? Can I get the ante natal dept or EPU to write me a sick note, rather than waiting ages to see my gp and having to go through it all over again?

At the moment I just want to curl up and hide from the world Hmm

I'm sorry to hear what your going through at the moment Thanks
Under different circumstances, but yes, EPU wrote me a 2 week sick note post surgical ectopic removal. It also just said "abdominal surgery" so it wasn't specific about exactly what had happened.
Hope thigns settle down soon, and someone else can deal with the difficult customer - not what you need right now.

I'm really sorry for your losses. Absolutely reasonable to have some time off in my opinion. I've previously only taken a couple of days and frankly it
wasn't enough and I regret it. Next time (optimistic!) I'm going to have a minimum of two weeks.

As we're forever being told miscarriage is terribly common and therefore I would hope theres a procedure in place for people needing sick notes. I would try epu in the first instance. If that doesnt work i would phone your gp. Sometimes gp can write sick notes based on looking at your notes without having to see you... They should have info from the EPU about what happened. Could you try calling gp receptionist and asking him/her for advice?

I'm sorry again, its awful. Curling up and hiding sounds like a plan. X

I am so sorry :( I have had an ectopic and a MMC for both my GP signed me off. The ectopic was discovered at a scan so DH called my boss, it mid December, I went back in the New Year (just over two weeks). With MMC I was told to take as much time as I needed by my GP and I had two weeks. For both the Sick Note was signed just before I went back to work. Take all the time you need I am sure your GP will back you with this. Do you have an awkward employer ?

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. When I had a 2nd m/c I was signed off for 3 weeks. I was severely anaemic, after heavy blood loss and that's the reason I went with. Mentally I couldn't cope with work in the immediate aftermath, so even if I'd felt physically well, I'd have pushed to be signed off.

Im sorry for your loss.

I was off for 8wks after my mmc, I felt awful physically and mentally I struggled to focus on anything. My gp wrote me a note without me having to go in and see her.

I got a sick note from my GP, but self certified for a few days until I got the note, then was home for 2 weeks., this was after MC4 as after the others I also just took two or three days off tops

Thank you all - it's really good to know some people "get it" (even though I wish we weren't in this situation IYSWIM).

I think I'm giving myself a hard time because I only took 1-2 days off the last times (with the exception of 3-4 weeks off when I lost my twins at 22w last year), but I'm feeling so fragile there's no way I could be productive (or sit in an office all day without crying!).

Thanks again

Hi curtains,
So sorry for your loss, I can't imagine the pain you must be going through for the 4th time.
I had mm of a mmc 4.5 weeks ago and yesterday was my first day in the office. I had 3 weeks off sick and worked from home the 4th week (although I had to go into hospital for checks and a scan so didn't actually get much work done). Then yesterday I went into the office and am working from home today and tomorrow (I only work pt).
I self cert the 1st week then got a sick note for the next 2 weeks. I spoke to my GP on the phone, I didn't need to see them, and they did me one to pick up the same day from the surgery. The hospital never mentioned a sick note but I have heard that some offer a 2 week one when you're discharged, not sure if this is meant to be std practice or not.
I am so glad I had a few weeks off to be able to grieve and come to terms with it. If I had gone back earlier I don't think I would have coped very well. It seems very hard for us ladies to do at times but we really need to put ourselves 1st when this happens, take time off and not feel pressured into returning to work before we feel ready. Please be kind to yourself and at least take a couple of weeks off.
Thinking of you xxx

Sorry for your losses OP. The hospital wrote me a two week sick note the day I went in for medical management. In retrospect I actually don't think it was enough time. When I first went back to work I just stared at the screen unable to concentrate. Take as much time as you need Flowers

Emerlily · 22/10/2014 15:35

I'm so sorry for your loss.
I stupidly tried to go to work with my 1st mc on the same day it started, I got sent home but was back in the next day for 2 days before a long weekend. Now with my mmc (3months later) I had 3 days holiday when I had my 12wk scan and the bad news then went into work for a day whilst waiting for the second scan told work I couldn't go in (I work in a nursery) I signed myself off sick and then my doc wrote a 2 week note. I attempted work on Monday lasted 3 hours and have been signed off for another 2 weeks then looking into being phased back into work. My doc thinks its because I didn't deal with the first it has become harder.
you need to take as much as you need you cant force it take care x

Have an awkward manager.
Recently had a third miscarriage and taking off from work. Emailed my manager. She replied back asking for a medical report as is not sickness related. Because I’m planning only to take 3 days off should be a self certification only. I don’t understand why she is still asking for medical reports. Knowing her it would be that she is not being supportive and only cares about the work being done as I’m the only staff in the team. I wish I could tell her that I am entitled and not need for a medical report evidence ..how should I be about this. It feels like in top of struggling so much in this time I need to deal with my manager worries that work needs to be done. How is everyone else feeling about this situation and how should I react/do?

This doesn’t seem right at all. If you are requesting a type of special leave that could be correct but if you are saying you are ok with this leave being sick leave, then you absolutely can self certify this. I would reply saying that it is sickness leave as you are recovering physically and mentally from what has happened and requesting the time off to recover from this. If required you could get a sick note but only after x amount of days
