Aspirin before or after BFP?

Just wondered if those advised to take aspirin after recurrent miscarriage were told to take it all the time or wait for a BFP?
I'm 44, have three DC 19,13 and 8 and had a MC in March this year at 10-11wks.
We tried again next cycle,conceived but I miscarried at 6 weeks in June.
I actually ovulated and conceived 14 days after bleeding had started and despite seeing a heartbeat at 7 weeks and a scan at 8 weeks showing normal growth, we discovered at a 10 week scan the heart had stopped at 8w6d and I went on to miscarry at 12 weeks in early Sept.
Due to my age and the fact that we have three children I've been told I am not eligible for any tests or investigation.They say that chromosomal abnormality would be likely, though clotting may also be an issue.
The advice relayed from the consultant via my GP was to start taking aspirin every day from the start of my next AF and try again, but at my age any pregnancy would only have a 50% chance of a successful outcome anyway.
I've read of many people being told not to start taking aspirin until after a BFP as there is a suggestion it may interfere with implantation and I would be interested to hear of advice given to other people.

Dr Rai at St Mary's hospital said that the evidence he had, was that asprin only helped those with known clotting issues when taken after bfp, he said that the group with known clotting issues who took it before bfp had a lower rate of successful pregnancies compared to the group with no asprin taken : therefore the inferance that asprin interferes with implantation. However this was verbally said to me by him and I have not looked into the research personally.

I had six miscarriages, was referd to St Mary's the outcome was to take 150mg aspirin after a BFP. Which I did and my dd was born in March as a result. I was 39 when I had her. They had later told me that they recommend any woman over the age of 35 with repeated miscarriages to take aspirin.

So I'd say its worth a try. It certainly worked for us.

I'm on 75mg aspirin, but more for previous PE than miscarriage. Like others, I was advised by my consultant only to start it after BFP, not before due to the link with implantation.

However I have had 2 miscarriages since starting aspirin after BFP - I'm now pregnant again on aspirin, so I'm not sure how much it has helped. But it certainly hasn't done me any harm.

I would give it a go after BFP. Crossing everything for you!

Congrats on your dd Geekster . Had you actually had any bloods to diagnose a clotting problem before the aspirin was recommended?
I'm suppose I could consider a private referral and blood tests, but because of my age I don't want to delay ttc waiting for results, especially if the advice afterwards would be likely to be the same.Every month counts.
I thought it was a bit odd to be told to take aspirin daily from AF so will wait (and hope!) until I get a BFP first. I have to be realistic, I know it's not very likely I will conceive again but I feel I need to try.

I've recently been seen in a recurrent miscarriage clinic and was advised to take aspirin from BFP to 12 weeks. THe constant admitted the evidence for this was a bit sketchy but basically said I had nothing to lose by doing this.

Hi Irishmammybread I had a blood test that showed a slightly elevated thromboelastogram whatever that is! Even the haematologist didn't seem to know. St Mary's hosp said the aspirin might not make any difference but was worth a try and boy did it make a difference. My husband has an inversion on one of his chromosomes, the other one in the pair is fine but that gave us a 50/50 chance so after six there was obviously something else wrong hence the aspirin. After the first three miscarriages I had the usual clotting tests which all came back fine. They since have told me that women over 35 who have no obvious cause for miscarriage can benefit from taking aspirin. You certainly haven't got anything to loose and I wish you good luck.

Irishbreadmammy - hi, I am doing well, no more miscarriages or pregancies since the start of the year for me, so feeling good. I also want to say that I got an appointment at st mary's in a week, I was pregnant at the time and rang asking for the soonest appointment they could offer, and got the tests done in london within 2 days, and results all back a week later. So all done very quickly. It cost me a little over 500 pounds, but the reassurance it gave me I think was worth every penny at the time, having had some really bad experiences in the hospitals at home. I hope that you get the help that you want, I would say that if you are going to check for blood clotting then get the tests before starting asprin, otherwise just start on 75mg post bfp, I had clotting issues show up, so have been recommended 150mg post bfp. Hope you are doing ok.
