Swabs?

Just had a call from the hospital to say that the swabs that were taken when I was admitted haven't been processed and will have to be repeated. he also said the routine swabs weren't requested but the doctor has asked for some specific tests. None of this was discussed with me at the time. I now have to go to the GP and get them repeated, but I've got a copy of what was sent to the GP, it says "query miscarriage" so they will have no clue. I am so upset - thought it was all over and I was doing ok, but now it's all up in the air again. I phoned back and of course nobody is available to speak to me. Does anyone know what they test for?

I've had three MC's, and know what you mean bout things being thrown up in the air again when they have been settling, poor you.

I have no idea what the swabs would be for, i'm sorry. I had swabs for MRSA but yours might be for something different.

As for the specific tests ordered, were these blood tests?

With me they tested for thyroid problems, blood clotting problems, anaemia, and a couple of others i can't remember.

I think what they test for depends on whether it was your first loss or a recurrent problem, and how far along in the PG it was. Do you feel able to give any of these details?

2nd first trimester loss but I've had a successful pregnancy in between. Just so upset that I have to go to GP and explain whole sorry tale again and endure more rummaging about when I thought it was all over. Has completely destroyed my thin veneer of coping ok.

I do know what you mean about having to repeat the whole sorry tale, I kept getting given appointments with people covering for my consultant, and having to start again with them, it was grim.

Could you type out a brief history/list of what you want to say to the GP and just hand it over? I do this now, it avoids me having to repeat it all each time.

Also, don't feel you have to have a veneer of coping, I've given up and if i need a good cry I have one- even if it makes the gp etc uncomfortable.

For my first MC they did swabs for MRSA and Chlamydia - as that can cause many problems.

I had swabs for an infection. They were positive. Not much consolation when you are 22+ weeks.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I had more swabs taken yesterday for chlamydia and general bacterial culture/sensitivity, and bloods for TORCH testing. I really hope they are all negative, i think a positive would be hard to deal with. Rip I am so sorry for your loss, can only imagine how awful it must be to lose a baby that far along when you think it will all be ok. Jen x
