positive pregnancy test 5 weeks after mmc

Hi im after some advice please!
I recently had a missed miscarriage. I was meant to be 10 weeks but went for a scan and the baby had stopped developing at 8 weeks. I miscarried naturally the next day. That was 29th March so nearly 5 and a half weeks ago now. I went for another scan over a week after I miscarried and they confirmed that nothing remained.
As of yet ive had no sign of AF so thought id do a pregnancy test just to see (havent been actively trying to concieve again but havent been very careful either!). Anyway it showed up positive.
Do you think this could be a new pregnancy or just left over hormones from the miscarriage? The test showed positive immediatly and is a very dark line.
Im so confused!

I don't know for sure but I would have thought your hormone levels would be back down to normal by now. So it sounds like it could be a new pregnancy, congratulations!
Usually the docs advise having a AF before trying again so they can calculate due dates etc. I don't know what you do now - wait a couple more weeks and repeat the test and then book in with the midwife again? Have you any other pregnancy symptoms?

BabyBellasMumma · 06/05/2012 17:05

Thanks for your reply. In the last week I have been feeling tired and hungrier than normal which were the 1st symptoms to appear last time (that's partly why I thought to do a test).
The doctor did say to wait until after AF to ttc but as it took me almost a year to concieve last time (i wasnt ovulating regularly) i just thought it wouldn't happen.
I think ill wait another week and try testing again and then maybe see a doctor if its another positive.

I would cautiously say it is a new pregnancy, it you had a clear scan then your hormone levels should have dropped pretty quickly. I ov'd 2 weeks after I lost one pregnancy and they counted my m/c as AF for dating so when I tested 6 weeks past m/c they counted it as 6 wks pregnant. I was lucky they agreed to an early scan 2 weeks after I found out and was 8wks.

When I miscarried I had a pg test 2 weeks after medicated miscarriage & the midwife said the levels of hormones were negligible. Would it be worth trying one of the digital ones with conception indicator?

Hi there, I've been reading up on mc's lately as I'm in limbo between pregnancy and mc, docs suggest not to ttc until at least AF has been and gone at least once, this is because your hCG may not have disappeared from your mc creating a false positive on pregnancy tests and ovulation tests. Apparently it can become very tricky to give an actual conception date and due date, but also if your hormones have not fully recovered it can give the impression of a second pregnancy when its actually it's false.

I do truely hope you are pregnant and everything goes well!! It will give the rest of us some hope :)

Hi babybella,
I could have written your post! I too had a miscarriage the same week as you @ 7 weeks and 12 days ago had a BFP. I have done a second early response (4 days after 1st) and line was much darker. I have also done two digital tests a week apart. They went from 1-2 to 2-3 weeks since conception so pretty sure HCG rising. I saw GP last week about something for DS and happened to mention it. She was great & said it sounds like a new pg (I'd had to bfn since my miscarriage) and to double check she said wait 2 weeks, take another test and then go to EPU for a viability scan. She even gave me the referral there & then & said to go at my own convenience. I think I'm now approx 5 weeks, so plan to wait another 2 weeks (all being well) and then go. By then I should be 5/6 since conception (if digi correct ) and so 7/8 weeks pg. hopefully far enough along to see something. Keep in touch & good luck. I think your plan to retest & then go is a good one. Xxx

Cakeplease · 07/05/2012 13:37

Ps - did you do a pg test after miscarriage? I was not given a scan but told bfn signalled mc was complete.

If your scan was 4.5 weeks ago and clear I'd be surprised if you had enough HCG for a strong positive. I had a very faint positive 7 days after main miscarriage and a neg after 10 days however I guess it could be possible.

I would do a digi test and see and get GP to refer you. Then in a few weeks you could go & get checked at EPU. My GP reassured me that their are no increased risks of a pg straight after mc & that your body is primed for a pg. fingers & toes crossed xxx

You definitely can conceive again pretty quickly. I had an early mc (5 weeks) in mid-January, conceived again a fortnight later, lost that one even earlier (just over 4 weeks) in mid-February, ovulated a bit later that time, not until mid-March (so 4 weeks rather than 2 weeks after loss), and conceived again at the mid-March ovulation. 9 weeks pregnant now and I am v. ill but baby is OK so far! Had no idea you can conceive repeatedly like that but obviously it's possible - it was as if once my body had done it once it was really determined to keep doing it!

I have heard of positive tests quite a while after a miscarriage but usually when there's been ongoing bleeding for a long time. Probably best to get checked out but tentative congratulations!

BabyBellasMumma · 07/05/2012 20:00

Thank u for all your replies, it does help to hear other peoples opinions and suggestions!
Cakeplease- I remember you from when we were both bleeding, how exciting that u are now pregnant! So happy for you :) i didn't do a test after the miscarriage so never had a negative result, but i stopped bleeding quickly afterwards and the scan a week later showed nothing remained.
I have just done a digital test which came back as 2-3 weeks pregnant (from conception). Im obviously still not sure if this is a new pregnancy but 2-3 weeks from conception would be about right if it is.
I am going to wait until next Monday to test again, if it still says positive I will make an appointment with the doctor.
This week its going to be so hard to not imagine im feeling every pregnancy symptom there is!

Babybella - congrats this does seem like a new pregnancy!
Hold on to that feeling!!!! I understand how scared you are do why not contact your local EPU for a scan they can tell u and confirm all is where it should be and then you can return a few weeks later to see heartbeat!!!
Trust me I wish I could get pregnant again so soon just a week on from my ectopic and still in pain!!
Good luck I pray all goes well xx

BabyBellasMumma · 14/05/2012 15:38

Well I waited a week and have just done another digital test. Last Monday it said 2-3 weeks from conception and it now says 3+ weeks. So im certain this must be a new pregnancy. But im soooo worried now as the pregnancy symptoms ive had all week seem to have completely disappeared (tiredness, nausea, sore bbs, hunger). Got drs appt tomorrow so gona see if I can have a scan cos im now convinced ive had another mmc! I hope im just being paranoid but scared cos i don't feel remotely pregnant now!

Congratulations BabyBella.

I'm 2 weeks from my mmc/EPRC and suspect that I may have ovulated this week. DH and I have been making the most of it, but I wasn't sure that it could happen so quickly. Your posts have given me hope.

I was told by my EPU that as soon as I was 7 weeks with my next pregnancy I could self refer and walk in for a scan - have you tried calling your nearest EPU? I'm sure you'll be ok! 1 mc does not raise your risk for another, but I understand your fears. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

backwardpossom · 14/05/2012 18:59

Fingers crossed this one is a sticky, BabyBella :)

Goofymum · 14/05/2012 20:18

Good luck BabyBella, keep us updated. x

BabyBellasMumma · 15/05/2012 16:17

Just to keep you all updated! Saw dr today who was completely useless! She said she wasnt sure if it was a new pregnancy or left over hormones, I thought she may take some blood or something but no she just looked my symptoms up on the internet then phoned 2 other drs to ask their opinions! In the end her advice was to wait another week and then test again!
So I phoned the epu when I got home and asked there opinion. They said it sounds like a new pregnancy and want me to go in for a scan next weds. So I have another week of not knowing! But hopefully will know for sure next Wednesday x

Aarrgghh! How annoying! At least you have a scan booked and I hope time will fly until then. Let us know.....

BabyBellasMumma · 23/05/2012 13:53

Ok well I had my scan this morning and I am pregnant! 7 weeks and 1 day! I am obviously over the moon but am trying to not get too excited in case anything goes wrong again. It was lovely seeing the heartbeat on the screen today, but of little reassurance to me as we saw a strong heartbeat at 7 weeks with my previous pregnancy which ended in miscarriage. However, the lady did say that the scan this morning showed everything to be completely normal and there was nothing there that concerned her :)
Its only 8 weeks this Thursday since my miscarriage so cant believe I fell pregnant again so quickly, I never thought it would be possible!
