Help - problems after d and c. Is this normal?

I had a miscarriage in early November after finding out at the 12week scan there was no heartbeat. In January I had to have an emergency d and c as there was still some tissue left and I had a massive bleed. It 's now three months since the d and c and I've still not had a proper period. I have had some very light bleeding (only needs a pantyliner) for one day but I'm in a lot of pain. Will ring my GP again on Monday (saw her a month ago and she didn't seem concerned) but I'm starting to really worry. I'm 37 and desperate to have a child. Any advice would be great. I'm in a bit of a state. Just feel like the problems are going on forever.

Hi newmum75, I don't have experience of what you've struggled with but really wanted to write to say what a sorry situation you've been going through. I really hope you can get some help on Monday. Thanks

Hi newmum. Really sorry you're going through this, it sounds very harrowing & stressful. I had a similar experience after my 1st erpc in that, after the initial bleeding stopped, I bled very lightly on & off for 3 months. I went to see a consultant privately about it & they scanned me & found nothing wrong (although I do have pcos anyway which can affect my cycle). He said that it was very likely stress was causing my hormones not to regulate. obviously it was a very stessful time - I felt like as if having a mc wasn't enough I then couldn't conceive again either. He prescribed progesterone to induce a fake period and then I conceived my DD 2 wks later.

However you say that you're in pain & I wasn't. I think with me it was just that my hormones weren't surging enough for a proper bleed & probably it was the stress & trauma if my mc & also my job that added to these problems.

I've recently had another mc & saw a different consultant. He said that a 3 month gap between a erpc & your cycle resuming isn't unusual & wouldn't worry him.

So I'd say not to overly worry about the period side if things (as strss can make it worse) but if it's been over 3 months since the erpc see if you can get referred to a consultant (mine was covered on health insurance). However if you're still in pain I'd say definitely push to get checked out.

Hope you're ok & sorry for the long rambling post!! X

Hi newmum, so sorry for your miscarriage & the problems you've had since. It could well just be your hormones settling down after your loss but because you mention you are also in pain there is a chance the D& C has caused something called Asherman's Syndrome, maybe have a look at www.ashermans.org as it is something that's you should get checked, especially if you believe you are ovulating & the pain & light bleeding happens again next month. Fingers crossed its just your body & hormones settling down.

Helen x
