Utterly confused by the early scan..

Hi all.
Have been trying for dc4 since October.
Got period on April 1 which lasted a day lightly then stopped. Had been feeling sick and tired and bloated so took two tests on the 5th and both positive.
Went to gp who advised early scan due to bleeding.

Scan on Thursday when in theory should have been 6+2 showed a sac and evidence of blood clots around the outside. No heartbeat or anything else.

Been told to go back in two weeks to re scan and in meantime wil either bleed more and miscarry or there is a chance it could develop into a viable pregnancy ??

That is the part I'm confused about- surely there should have been more to see than just a sac?
Had early scans before and saw heartbeats but that was at 8 weeks.

Feel pregnant still but don't want to get my hopes up..

Hello girl I just had to drop a line even though I'm not an expert. Just because you can't see a heartbeat at 6 weeks doesn't mean that you will MC. It seems like you will just have to wait and see in 2 weeks time.

Good luck and keep us posted.

LIG1979 · 16/04/2011 14:16

Yes - LAF77 is right. I had a scan which showed a 6 week sac and they were not bothered about the lack of heartbeat. Good luck. x

I agree with the previous posters. I've always been told to wait until at least 7 weeks for an early scan so that a heartbeat can definitely be seen. Sometimes a hearbeat can be seen earlier than that but not always.

The waiting is really horrible, but it really is all you can do at the moment. Good luck!

Thanks very much.
Just wondering why they seemed more erring toward it not being viable ?

Hmm, I don't know. I have found that they're very matter of fact at this early stage - It feels hugely emotional to us but for them it's very early and not so significant, I think. So could it be that they don't know which way it will go and don't want to give you false hope? Good luck. I know the wait is awful.

Thanks the wait is horrible only done thurs- Sunday and I've had enough

I had a mc 4 weeks ago at 5+1, and my scan showed my womb was totally empty.....

I have seen good outcomes on here, thinking of you and good luck x

harassedinherpants · 17/04/2011 18:20

Oh did they test your hcg levels??

girlsyearapart · 18/04/2011 10:53

Sorry for your loss h.

No they didn't do anything except the scan. I haven't had any more bleeding and still feel pregnant..

If I took a test would it still come up positive with the sac there but no baby?

Feel like I'm torturing myself now though..

It horrifies me when I read of women being sent away for two weeks to see what happens. I know there's not much else they can do but have they any idea what torture it is to be in that situation. How it takes over absolutely all of your life and is the only thing you can think about. It's cruel.

Just seen you're in SW London. Have you tried the EPU at St George's? They will scan you with no questions asked. That's where I went and discovered my mmc when no one else thought that my feeling that all wasn't right wasn't a good enough reason Hmm

Mitzimaybe · 18/04/2011 20:41

Unfortunately a test would still be positive if there's a sac but no baby growing in it. However, if you're not bleeding and feel all right then hopefully everything's fine. I'm by no means an expert but I'm sure that 6 weeks would be very early to see a heartbeat and 7-8 weeks is more normal.

Two weeks to wait is awful! Try to keep calm and relax as much as you can, and try to get seen in an EPU if you haven't already. Best wishes.

girlsyearapart · 18/04/2011 20:59

Thanks both for your replies.
I'm not going to do a test it would just get my hopes up.
The scan I had was at the epu at Kingston.
They were nice and you can self refer but they clearly want me to wait two weeks as the receptionist tried to book me in for ten days and the sonographer said no two weeks..

I think I'll just have to bite the bullet really and wait.
I'm ok in the day as I have 3 kids to look after but I'm having trouble sleeping.

And my normal stress release would be to do some hard exercise which I can't do just in case..

Is it possible for you to get blood tests done? If you knew your pregnancy hormone and progesterone levels are normal (and going up appropriately on a repeat test) then it would give you a lot of reassurance. I'm surprised the EPU didn't do them as they told me it's the combination of the scan and bloods that tell them what's going on with the pregnancy.

Ask your GP if the EPU won't do them?

Thinking of you; it's such an anxious time.

girlsyearapart · 19/04/2011 19:50

I don't know why they didn't do bloods.
I suppose I could pursue it further but I think I'll just wait..

Good luck. FX for you.

girlsyearapart · 20/04/2011 21:50

One more day and I'll b half way through my wait..
