What happens now?

My friend went for her scan yesterday and found out she had a MMC at 9 weeks :(

Can she wait for it to happen naturally and if so for how much longer?

If it doesn't happen naturally then what do they do?

What are the pros and cons of waiting or going for a D&C straight away?

My friend has obviously been asking me questions because I have been through it but I don't want to just tell her my experience if it doesn't always happen like that IYSWIM.

I had a MMC last year at 15 weeks. Eventually I did start to bleed naturally but DS' friend's mum took me to hospital cos I was bleeding so much. I passed the baby fine (he was the tiniest little thing with proper arms and legs) but there was some retained products so I had to have a D&C which took about 5-10 mins.

Are you given a pessary with a D&C? I wasn't because my cervix was already open from passing the baby.

Did you suffer any effects from the GA and how long did it take you to wake up after? I think I just felt a groggy when I came round but was awake after half an hour. Apparently it doesn't effect some people at all.

How long did you have to stay in hospital after? I think I was only there about 3 hours.

Did you have any antibiotics and how were they given? I was given a shot through my canula and that was it.

Hi

I'm sorry that your friend is going through this, she is lucky to have a friend like you to support her.

I had a mmc 5 weeks ago, at 11 weeks. I was offered 3 options - to wait (up to 2 weeks, any longer than that is an infection risk), pessaries or an eprc, I chose the pessaries which I had 2 days later in hospital. They should give her options and go through each one. I can't answer your other questions sorry because I've never had a d&c but I'm sure someone will help soon.

Good luck to your friend

With the pessaries do you stay in hospital until everything has passed? Do you have a follow up scan afterwards?

When do they think your baby died? She found out at 11+2 but the baby died at around 9 weeks.

My baby stopped growing at 8 weeks.

I had to stay in hospital overnight because they couldn't see that everything had come out, basically every time I went to the toilet it was in a bedpan and they checked it. I had to have the pessaries and 2 oral doses. I did have a follow up scan but I dont think that's routine, it was because they hadn't seen everything. My scan was clear though, so it had all come away. I was sent home on antibiotics.

I chose that treatment because I couldn't face sitting at home not knowing when it'd happen, and I didn't want a surgical procedure if I could avoid it.
