When should I have a -ve HPT?

I had a miscarriage at nearly 10 weeks 3 weeks ago but am still having (faint) +ve HPTs. The consultant at EPU said I should test after 2 weeks and if it was still +ve then to go back in so they could make sure everything was as it should be. But I can feel AF looming. Surely if AF appears then everything is 'as it should be'?

Not necessarily. I had a positive test after 8 weeks, went in for a scan, started AF a week later, and a week after that still had a positive test. I ended up needed a hysteroscopy to remove some remaining tissue but I do not think that is very common. And also my tests were quite dark (blood HCG was over 300). I would go and have a scan just to remain on the safe side.
