sensitive question about miscarriage at 18 weeks

A friend of mine lost her baby last night at 18 weeks . She had to go through delivery after they weren't able to stop the pre term labor contractions.

She asked me if I knew whether her milk would come in? I have no experience of miscarriage, but wanted to support her. It's a bit difficult as she's in the USA.

Shouldn't do. It wouldn't normally come in that early and I really hope it doesn't. So sorry to hear this news.

it really is unlikely, but on the very off chance there is a medication they can give which stops it very quickly.

I had a miscarriage at 18 weeks and my milk did come in. It was very uncomfortable but did stop after a few days. I hope it doesn't happen for your friend. xxx

Mine did at 16 weeks but preganncy was only 12/14 weeks we think, but I had had children before iyswim.

I'd say possible but unlikely. She might be best to prepare for this possibility.

I think when one feels one's body has failed (as one can sometimes do after miscarriage) then milk coming in can be viewed positively as a sign that your body hasn't failed and that there is hope of things coming together succesfully in the future.

My milk did come in with an 18 week loss and again with a 20 week one.

i do think that they are more likely to offer the medication to prevent it in the USA. (I was offered it in Switzerland but opted not to take it.)

You are a very kind friend to ask on her behalf. Every woman's experience following a loss is different but for me the kindest thing my friends did was to listen to me talk about my experience. My heart goes out to you both as I suspect that it is uncomfortable to be on the other side of the loss...

Thank you everyone. It's especially hard as I'm a month further along than she is and am very conscious of not wanting to upset her. She's been without sleep for past 3 days as they tried in vain to stop her labor and then she was in labor in hospital.

Will speak to her DH and discuss the possibility of her milk coming in as she's exhausted and sleeping.

I lost my baby at 20 weeks and didn't get any milk in, but was told to expect it.
A friend of a friend who lost her son at 17 weeks did get milk in, so she may or may not.
