Positive then negative then positive...please help

OK...I need some MN advice and reassurance.

Discovered last week that I am pregnant again. Have had 3 MCs but not consecutive - after the first 2, had a successful pg, which is now my lovely 2.5 yr old DS. So I am a bit nervous, to say the least.

Went to GP today and she sent me to the EPU because of my history and because I had some spotting the day I got the BFP. I was not actually that worried about the spotting, having had this with my successful pregnancy anyway.

At the EPU, they did a scan and couldn't see anything at all. They said this was either because it was too early still (I put myself at about 4 weeks - have long cycle but think conceived about 2 wks ago), or because an early MC had occurred, or maybe it could be ectopic.

Then they did a urine test which was negative. I was totally shocked. They said this indicated early miscarriage but it was hard to tell. I was stunned. Then they took blood for the 48 hr HCG test, so I have to call back tonight for those results, then go in on Thu to have more bloods taken.

Anyway, on the way home, of course, I went to Boots and bought another digital ClearBlue test, which has come up POSITIVE, 1-2 weeks - which seems about right. I did a ClearBlue test last Friday, which was also positive, 1-2 weeks.

So...what do people think?? Can I be cautiously optimistic - thinking that it is early days anyway so the scan showing nothing is not that bad news, and the negative test they did was an anomaly, since I have done 5 (yes, FIVE) positive tests, one of which was after their negative test? Or should I start preparing myself for the inevitable miscarriage?

you poor thing... the HCG tests should be able to tell you more. Was the urine test you did in the hospital a pee in pot one? Did they rush it maybe? Maybe it was a faulty test... OR a very low sensitivity one (though that seems unlikely)? It just seems you can't get a false positive, but you can a false negative IYSWIM? But peeing on sticks is the work of the devil.... blood levels much more conclusive.

IMO I would have thought any scan as early as that would/could be inconclusive.

FX for you. I know the waiting is the worst.

Thanks Jollster... The one at the hospital was a pee in a pot one. I was amazed it was negative as I had done a positive one at home yesterday and I feel MORE pregnant today than yesterday. Hence my mad dash to Boots.

I guess I have to see what the HCG in the blood is doing and try not to worry till then. God, you're right though, the waiting is the worst...

Hi, sorry this is happening starkadder. Could it be that you are so very very early in your pregnancy that the test they did wasn't picking anything up?

Im fairly surprised they scanned you as they can't see anything until hcg is 1,000 or you are six weeks pregnant.

Fingers crossed that the HCG will bring good news.

Oh I do feel for you starkadder. Not surprising you're confused. I agree with the others that it may just be because it's so early. Usually the urine tests at the hospital are really sensitive, but I've managed to get negative results using them in the past, even though I was still getting + HPTs after my mc. It's such an emotional rollercoaster. Have you got your blood test results back yet? Let us know how you get on.

Thanks all. I've just got the first HCG results back, which are 33. The consultant at the hospital had told me, it really doesn't matter what level they are, the important thing is how quickly they increase - i.e. what happens in the next 48 hrs. But the person on the phone just now told me that 33 is very low and that I should prepare for the worst....

I think it will be a long 48 hrs.

Well, I don't think I have to wait the 48 hours after all...started to bleed last night so I am pretty sure it is all over.

Shed some tears last night but feel OK about it as it was so early, and I hadn't allowed myself to get too carried away yet. They couldn't even see anything on the scan yesterday so I kind of feel like this is not much more than just having a period...not so much losing a baby.

I had 2 MCs before DS and have now had 2 since, so maybe I'll be third time lucky again...

Am awaiting bleeding to start as had my third MMC confirmed on Monday, so know a bit of how you feel.

Thanks Jollster :( I think the worst part is the kind of awful familiarity of it all.

I recognise these feelings and I really don't like them that much. It's basically a return to a kind of low level misery.

After my DS was born, it was like the clouds parted - the world seemed new again - I was SO happy, right up till the next MC. And I am still happy, generally - I love him so much, and generally have a great life...but it is hard not to let these MCs overshadow things a bit.

It's also hard because one doesn't know whether to try to come to terms with not having another baby or whether to look on the bright side and think, "next time will surely be fine". Hard to kind of position yourself emotionally, if you know what I mean.

know EXACTLY what you mean... I am 42 so am starting to come to terms with having an only child. It's pants. But can't spend my life wishing for a life I don't have, when I should just enjoy the one I do have. AND cherish every day with DS. Nothing after all is guaranteed. There is a woman on our 40+ thread who (I hope won't mind me recounting) lost her only child age 3 after complications following chicken pox. Life stories like that force you to regain perspective.

Starkadder so sorry to hear this. I have been in a very similar situation, with low hcg, told to expect MC, then it doubled and was told 'ongoing pregnancy' then it rose way, way too slowly to be viable and was in fact a mc.

I just hope all works out well for you and keep my fingers crossed for your next beta hcg result.

I know it's hard but do cherish the little one you have - I would give anything for just one x

Really no point keeping fingers crossed at this point, it is definitely all over. I suppose I should still go tomorrow for the 2nd HCG test just to complete things.

Hairy - it is terrible going up and down like that. My last MC (the one before this one), they told me at first scan at 5 weeks to go for a D&C. Then doctor at D&C said it was too early to be 100% sure. Then they saw a heartbeat at 7 wks. Then at 10 wks I started to bleed and they confirmed MMC a few days after the heartbeat scan. I was in pieces. This time has been a lot easier emotionally - and physically, because it's all coming away naturally and I am pretty sure no D&C needed.
