We had a scan two days ago (at 10 weeks) and it seems the baby diesd at 8 weeks.) I'h had spotting for the two days before and still have spotting now - how long before the miscarriage actually happens? And how much does it hurt - I have cocodamol...

hi, it could be quite a while. with my last miscarriage, which was at exactly the same stage as yours (baby died at 8 weeks) i wanted to avoid another ERPC so waited for it to happen naturally but after two or three weeks i was still only spotting so i ended up having an ERPC anyway. i've also had two 'spontaneous' miscarriages around the eight week mark and they didn't hurt at all, though the emotional hurt is obviously off the scale. but physically it was just like a period.

I had a mmc at 13 weeks and it was really painful. Like labour pains basically. I had over the counter co-codamol but you could get some extra codeine to whack the painkilling up (you can only get 8/500 over the counter but you can get 30/500 on prescription)

I had my scan at 11 weeks but no spotting. It started quite suddenly and lasted about 3 days.

Sorry for your loss

so sorry honeywitch, have had 2 MMCs so can begin to imagine how you are feeling.

My second one was a scan at 11 weeks, baby died at 9. I was booked in for ERPC (as had that first time round as baby bigger) but MC naturally at 11+6.

Everyone's experience (and perspective/pain threshold) will be different. I woke early and thought this is it, felt sick/dizzy and "heavy" in lower tummy. Mine was 5 hours of intense blood loss (couldn't leave bathroom) and moderate pain. Then a 8-10 day "period" lessening in blood loss all the time, but never too much or too painful (probably took painkillers twice).

I was scanned again about 5 days after start of MC to check and all was progressing ok. No further intervention needed.

I hope you are getting lots of RL support -look after yourself. There is a lovely TTC after MC thread if/when you decide to try again.

All the best.

Hi Honeywitch. I'm sortof in the same boat. Had slight spotting last Thurs, went to EPU and scan showed baby had died at7w4d. I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm Ok most of the time now tho am weepy this morning.

I'd rather mc naturally, and keep having cramping but does not come to anything and spotting has stopped. I'm trying to decide how long to leave it before considering intervention - so I can move on physically (and emotionally).

Hope things progress soon for both of us.

sorry for your loss honeywitch I've had two missed m/c and decided to wait for it to happen naturally the first time. The mmc happened at 7 weeks, I found out at 8 weeks and it was almost another 4 weeks before it was all finished. I found that very stressful tbh and next time went for erpc.

Velvetcu · 18/07/2010 16:08

hi honeywitch sorry for your loss. I had mmc in May, thought I was 11 weeks but baby died at 7. I had an erpc 2 weeks after that so it was 6 weeks after the baby had died and I had only slight spotting before that.

I was in lot of pain for 2 weeks after the eprc, partly due to some complications but found that I had to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen every 2 hours for mild relief.

Take care

hi, went for 12 week scan on 5th july, only to be told the baby had died at 8 weeks like so many other women. opted for errpc next day, couldn't wait for it to happen naturally, only had bleeding on day of op, wanted to try straight away, so started 2 days after op. 3 weeks after op now and still waiting for period to come. hope it doesn't take to long to fall again as time running out at 46.

I had ERPC at 7 weeks, baby had died at 5-6. After the ERPC the consultant said it would have been 1-2 more months before I miscarried on my own. Incidentally, there was product leftover from the ERPC and 3.5 weeks later I started to "miscarry" that which involved A&E and another ERPC and very nearly (and probably should have) a blood transfusion. I know in cases where people dont want an ERPC they give drugs, was this given as an option to you? Did they offer an ERPC? Hope you are ok.

lulu1414 · 26/07/2010 19:31

I'm really sorry you are going through this. I've had 2 MMC. First I opted for ERPC a couple of days later (I was 13 weeks and baby was 12+4), so had just died. This last time (a month ago) I was 10 weeks and baby was 9+5. I opted for natural/ expectant for many reasons. I waited exactly 2 weeks and it happened when I would have been 12 weeks. I started bleeding a bit then a few days later it all happened. It was very painful and lasted a full day. I didn't have any pain killers so probably more painful than if you have some good strong pain killers. Despite how this sounds I'm really pleased I let it happen naturally. It was awful, but manageable. I feel I recovered pretty quickly. Good luck- I hope you don't have to wait too long and hope it isn't too bad.

babydoe · 28/07/2010 09:42

Hi was asked if i wanted it to happen naturally, but said wanted alternative ERPC, didn't like the thought of waiting, knowing that it was dead in side of me. Sorry to hear both of your stories, i hope i have not had anything left inside. When your period came was it very heavy or just like a normal period?

spg · 28/07/2010 12:10

Sorry to hear all your stories. My sympathies to you all.

I have had a mc recently. Had a scan at 9 weeks (it shd be almost 11 wks by now if only..) and was told that the foetus had stopped developing. They had detected a heartbeat in the earlier scan 2 weeks prior to that and this time around, there was no heartbeat. I never had any spotting, though i had lots of strange pains.

The consultant took us through all the options and since there is a risk however small of infections and complications with the ERPC, we decided not to go for it. This is my first pregnancy.

Was given medicines to trigger the natural process. Waited for a week, nothing happened. Then was given another dose of the same. Some bleeding was there and after 3 days, y'day night, i had severe cramps and pain (like i have experienced never before) and passed what felt like a small clot...And after that, the pain vanished totally. There was some bleeding for the next 15 mins or so and there has been no bleeding since.

It makes me to think that this is just the start..The consultant said the foetus was 3cm..so, given that, it seems that there should be/would be more bleeding .. Does it happen in staggered steps, in some cases..I thought it will all be over, as in the majority of it, in one go..

I am not sure if i should be go to the EPU or should i just keep waiting..

Any thoughts anyone please?
