Sombre middle school uniforms

londonparent321 · 05/10/2023 08:13

Most of the local London primary schools have uniforms in an array of colours

However all the London secondary's seem to have black uniforms

Any reason secondary uniforms aren't as colourful?

Because teenagers would rather be seen dead then in colourful uniform?

SoupDragon · 05/10/2023 08:16

I don't think many secondary pupils would want colourful uniforms. Mine were pretty much always dressed in "sombre" shades when out of school.

There's a lot of purple uniforms in SE London.
I like the purple ones (if I had to pick a uniform - I am actually anti uniform).
One of the Harris schools has pink shirts (it's a girls school). Another Harris school has green blazers and jumpers. Another Harris has black blazers with bright orange edges. Several schools (not just Harris ones 😂) are burgundy.

There's a purple blazer one near me. But as PP says, kids don't like glaring colours. If they have any it's usually incorporated in to the tie or trim on jumpers, skirt if plaid.

I wish I could have worn black instead of a bright yellow blouse and brown gym slip.

Needmorelego · 05/10/2023 08:56

@Rocknrollstar there's a girls school in Croydon that still wears brown and yellow -ish.
It's....erm.... lovely 😂

oldest three's uniforms are blue with black and silver accents and i think they look quite nice. they don't look as "uniform-y," if you know what i mean.

My blazer was grey, red, yellow, blue and white striped. It was fucking hideous.

My kids hate their yellow shirts and tartan kilts (despite having nothing to do with Scotland).

There are a lot of purples here too.

Black is easy to buy.
Black is easy to blend in.
Teens prefer not to stand out.
A tie is all you need to identify a school

I feel the need for a photo! Not sure how you get so many colours on one!

Some near us have grey, it loooks worse than black

Xiaoxiong · 09/04/2024 00:47

Girls school near us is dark green blazer and skirt, green v neck jumper, white blouse and it looks pretty smart actually and not as severe as black or navy. They must have a school uniform hijab as well as they are also dark green!!
