Church of England schools? What is it?

You must excuse my ignorance, but I am foreign. I am looking to move to Wiltshire (from Berkshire where I have lived for 5 years), and it seems that there are lots of Church of England schools in this area. I have not had any experience with this school type and I do wonder exactly what they are. I am not Christian and my children (9 and 7) are not christened. Would they be able to go to a church of England school? Would they come home brain washed?

I don't know Wiltshire, but in rural Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and I'm guessing Worcestershire it makes no difference, because a lot of rural schools are undersubscribed. The nearest three schools to me (all about three miles in different directions) are CofE.

For the one CofE secondary school it does matter.

Oh and no brain washing, just the odd boring assembly.

Our CofE primary is

  1. Looked after DCs
  2. Catchment (a wobbly oval about 6 miles by 4 miles)
  3. Siblings (1/2, step etc. in the same house)
  4. CofE
  5. Other Christians

I have never known us need 4 or 5 or anyone's siblings not get in, even if they are over the county border.

Thank you for this, Nocomet. The school I have looked at are undersubscribed, so I guess my kids would get in.

Do you think that the CofE schools are different to non-faith schools? And if so, how? And why do some areas have more CofE schools than others?

I think it depends on the school, my youngest is at a C of E school and the church and school are closely intertwined and faith is high up the criteria for a place, though many get a place who aren't practicing Christians. It's a small town which helps.
