You’re not the woman in the shorts on another thread are you ?

😂 😂 😂 The one with the possible slices of naice ham in her lap?!

How long does it take for the cream to start plumping things up? I'm on day one!

MurphysColeslaw · 01/10/2026 23:58

NancyThompson · 01/10/2026 22:27

I personally wouldn't. If you think about it, everything that starts up high eventually works it's way down, and using them low means the top section of the vagina gets no hormones.

Well , I did presume it would make its way down, but all that talk of oestrogen receptors in the lower third and all that.
And as I do it atvnight just before going to bed I thought it might be better, no gravity?
I think I’ll just continue to do high placement so it doesn’t sting, unless I definitively find out something different.

I did say it was just a suggestion to place lower if you felt it wasnt effective in the vulval area and was something discussed on another forum
Where you having issues @MurphysColeslaw ?
If not I would continue as before

Bowies · 02/10/2026 03:41

You don’t need a prescription OP you can get topical oestrogen cream or pessaries ‘over the counter’ from your local chemist

AudiobookListener · 28/09/2026 19:26

Topical hrt will plump things up.

I second this. And pessaries for the dryness.

I really think this thread should be pinned at the top of the Menopause topic
@shrumps can you ask mumsnet?

I don’t know how to ask them? I am so pleased this thread has been so helpful - I’ve been on Mumsnet since I was pregnant in 2004 and I’ve never even had a response to a comment before 🤪 it’s been a revelation that so many women have this issue and yet it’s just not talked about. If anyone knows how to being this to MNHQ attention and they want to pin it please let me know.

You can try! I asked them to pin the NICE guidance which they did for a while then it disappeared. I have also posted, numerous times, the BMS guidance on Endometrial Protection with HRT as a link, (it has advice on how much progesterone, the types, when to investigate etc) and it would be great to have that and other medical guidance linked, but I'm not sure they want permanent links.

Honestly this is a minor part of ageing.

It may be for you but it has been devastating for me. I can't walk without discomfort and it is proving very hard to treat. People should know about this much more than they do now so they can catch it early.

There is presumably a limit on how many threads per board can be pinned.
Heres a thought - maybe there could be a pinned thread which linked to particularly helpful threads such as the ones you mention?

Only for over the counter. GP’s or Practice Nurses can prescribe it or you can get a private prescription.

vaginal estrogen will really help plus a moisturiser like yes VM

i have pessaries for internal and estriol cream for external

you will need to use it for the rest of your life even if you aren't having sex to keep UTI at bay

Oh can you have both? I didn't know that, I would.like both!!

Am pleased with the Ovesse that I have now been applying for a few days and previous mild itching that flared up has subsided.
I am beyond grateful for this thread!!!!!!!!

Bloody hell, menopause really is the gift that keeps on giving isn't it?
I'm good down below generally, but ITCHY as hell. Using Vagirux pessaries twice a week. I use Vagisil when I remember too, but that's not oestrogen based. What creams are you ladies using and is it prescription only or over the counter? I'm due a HRT review with my GP so would like to go in prepared.

Yes, ask your GP. I can't get mine interested - he did prescribe HRT patches after three years of nagging, but I've lost the will to keep on about my vulva. So I buy estriol cream from an online pharmacy. It's around £50 for three months' worth.

I never had dryness, but was getting symptoms of UTI or thrush every couple of months and always felt a bit sore or itchy. Heard about vaginal atrophy on here (thanks, Mumsnet!) The cream stopped all those symptoms within a few weeks. After reading up on it, I learned the inside of the vagina loses its ridges - that's what losing elasticity means, the ridges are from the stretchy concertina formed by the inner layer of muscle. I poked around and found I had, indeed, become weirdly smooth in there. Now, hurray, my ridges are back!

I am shameless about telling people what vaginal atrophy is and what to do about it. I've educated more than a few people who happened to be nearby while I was talking to friends about it 😆

I think there may be more success having a medical site linked to- eg the British Menopause Society papers on info, the Women's Health Concern ( that's also part of the BMS) or the website of Dr Louise Newson (though that may be harder as it would be seen potentially as advertising her .)

The point is though as you say where does it stop? There is an argument for no links or lots as there are so many issues around menopause.

Systemic? Not in all cases, no.

I think that the amount of systemic oestrogen makes a difference.

I needed the addition of localised oestrogen after being switched to combined HRT and then having the Mirena coil added into the mix. (I'd had post-menopausal spotting.) I hoped that switching to Elleste Solo once I got the all-clear from my third biopsy would be enough, but it wasn't quite.

Tryonemoretime · 03/10/2026 19:42

Does it hurt having the mirena coil fitted?
