Over 55 still having periods

Davidfromcorrie · 26/03/2026 08:03

I am over 55 and still having periods without fail every single month. Everyone else I know has stopped. No sign of meno, no hrt, just absolutely tired of it. Feel weird and elderly having this at my age. Is anyone else over 55 and still going naturally and regularly?

Did you start your periods late? Do you know if your mum had a late menopause?
Sympathy OP.

Meceme · 26/03/2026 08:17

I had my last at 58 1/2 🙄 hopefully - not quite a year yet!

Seeline · 26/03/2026 08:23

I had my last one at 55, but they definitely weren't regular at that point.
I'm not sure the link to Mum's age is that reliable, as my mum was done and dusted at 50.

nevertrustanyoneagain · 26/03/2026 08:31

Nearly 56 and finally just starting the menopause. Most of my friends were finished late 40’s!! Male GP unconcerned 🤷‍♀️🙄

SabrinaThwaite · 26/03/2026 08:32

Same here. Went on sequential HRT at 57 whilst having regular periods but definitely perimenopausal, and switched to continuous HRT at 59. Still getting the odd blip.

If late menopause is linked to longevity, I’m going to live to 150 at this rate.

Applecup · 26/03/2026 15:36

I was 58. My mum was 49 and sisters 50ish. No rhyme or reason why I was so late. I did start my periods at 14 and spent a few years breast feeding so don’t know if that makes a difference. I was told I was ‘lucky’ as skin stays supple for longer and less risk of heart disease or Alzheimer’s.

EmeraldJeanie · 26/03/2026 20:13

I was still having periods at 55 before starting hrt. Went on sequential.
I assume periods have stopped now but on early stages of conti patches (some bleeding) but early days and common side affect. I'm 59.

Davidfromcorrie · 26/03/2026 21:09

Had periods since the usual age. 13 or so...Maggie Thatcher was probably in charge. Mum stopped long before me. It's so draining. Yup regular every month. On holiday and I just want to have a break from the mess and pain. Have such sore breasts week's before and cramps I know some suffer with the meno, but I just cannot wait. Just wondering if many in same boat. A few I guess but not loads

My mum was late 50s when she stopped, and I’m 49 and regular as clockwork and really hoping I won’t be the same. I was a bit of a late starter - maybe 14/15. But I don’t see why I should get another 10 years at the end for that!

I'm really dumb with this kind of stuff. Can you take hrt if you're still having periods? I thought it was for when you were in menopause. I'm a bit medically backwards. Head in the sand not visit doctor type

At 57 I was sure I was in perimenopause, periods were down to every three weeks, I had hot flushes, my sleep was awful but my worst symptom was anxiety.

My GPs have a separate menopause service available, and I had a telephone consultation with one of their doctors - was very relieved to hear that anxiety is a common but often ignored symptom.

I’d recommend an appointment with a GP that you feel comfortable with - I have a male GP that is surprisingly good and super efficient, and a practice nurse that really knows her stuff.

Yes a year behind you OP and still going strong, no sign of any changes at all

Horrendous peri symptoms and I would say that started noticeably around 5 years ago and has been getting worse since

For some reason I thought it ws the earlier you started, the later you finish. I started at 11

itsthetea · 26/03/2026 21:54

HRT is for whenever the hormones start going haywire which is some years before menopause - which is sort of when the hormones are not big enough anymore to support periods

and the hormones carry on being weird for quite a few years after menopause too

55 is late end but not that late. Some people just have regular periods and then boom - no more. I kept expecting an on-off pattern or a big flood at 10 months but not 56 to 57 sudden stop

itsthetea · 26/03/2026 21:54

The Peri symptoms getting worse is a clear sign of menopause happening

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 26/03/2026 21:59

I’m 52. Periods still pretty much regular. Unfortunately both my mum and sister didn’t hit menopause until 60, so I feel mine will be around for a while yet.

I was too, the doctor put me on continuous HRT and they stopped the next month. Now I have HPV which seems coincidental

I was on HRT for five years before they switched it to continuous, it's not for when you stop bleeding, it's to regulate your hormones

You see I haven't even got any symptoms of meno. Just the usual crap that comes with periods.

I will be 55 in a few months and still regular. But my DM didn’t go into menopause until her late 50s pushing 60 so I’ve just accepted I may have a few years to go.

GarlicFound · 27/03/2026 01:32

Another me, too. Stopped at 62, the same age my mum's stopped.
Sympathies!

mondaytosunday · 27/03/2026 01:54

I had my last at 56 but they did start becoming irregular at around 54. No other symptoms whatsoever. Apparently some reach the age of 60 and still have periods. Ugh.

OnionBudgie · 28/03/2026 17:25

Yes, my last proper period was at 55 (I'm 56 now), although the months leading up to that final one had been irregular (three months clear, then three periods in a row with short gaps inbetween, one of them flooding). Since then, just a couple of instances of spotting, but I think I'm basically done. I honestly thought my periods would never end, they were driving me a bit crackers, tbh. "I'm too old for this!" So, solidarity with you. I hope the end is in sight for you.

MrsEmmelinePankhurst · 28/03/2026 17:33

I’m 54, I started my periods at 11 and I’m still having them. So so sick of it all. Have had peri symptoms since I was 37. Started HRT when I was 49. No sign of periods stopping. Yes my skin looks good I suppose but I’ve been bleeding heavily every 3 weeks (I have a short cycle) for 43 fecking years and I’m so over the pain, mess, cost and general faff of it all.

Solidarity OP.

TheHouse · 28/03/2026 17:33

My mum was 59. No HRT. Did suffer though.

TheHouse · 28/03/2026 17:34

Sorry meant to say she was very drained and frustrated by it all as her peers had long stopped having them. She’s 63 now. Skin is still good if it’s any consolation.
