Over 55 still having periods

I am over 55 and still having periods without fail every single month. Everyone else I know has stopped. No sign of meno, no hrt, just absolutely tired of it. Feel weird and elderly having this at my age. Is anyone else over 55 and still going naturally and regularly?

I'm glad I found this thread
I'm 57 and was regular until about 4 months ago. Thought I was out but started with an absolute doozy of a period yesterday - FS. My mum was 60 and my granny about the same when they stopped. I started my periods at 11. I've had peri symptoms for a couple of years but am actually feeling better as I have less hormones. I had bad PCOS and spent a lot of years with anxiety, poor sleep, brain fog, migraines etc as my hormones were so out of whack. As I've got towards menopause that's got better. I think I am very progesterone intolerant. I just want to stop bleeding.

Had my last period at 60. My mother similar.

This is a very enlightening thread...I am almost 53 and started my periods at 10...until about 6 months ago I have been regular as clockwork although they have been heavy and I've had a couple of flooding incidents. My mother, grandmother and aunt all had ovarian/breast cancer or pre cancerous issues so I'm super alert to any changes. I had irregular bleeding about 3 months ago and my GP whisked me in for a scan. One ovary has "retired but the other one is gamely persevering" according to the sonographer...although last month was the first time I have had no bleeding at all so I'm hoping this is the beginning of the end. My GP doesn't want to give me HRT if I don't need it as she thinks I'm obviously at higher risk, but aside from my chronic, lifetime insomnia getting worse (I thought impossible but apparently not), I haven't really had any symptoms. Am really hoping I don't have another 5 years though...I had no idea that it could be into ones 60s! (But I don't have any female relatives to ask because my grandmother and aunt died of cancer and my mother had precancerous ovarian cells/ovaries and hysterectomy removed before she went into menopause).

Yeah i was regular until 55 ish then started to miss a few through 56 and 57. 58 and they've stopped i think. Although had a last hoorah on xmas bloody morning 🙄🙄🙄 Fun that was.

Yep. I'm 56 soon and still having periods fairly regularly. Though currently on day 48 since last bleed and have sometimes gone 60 days between bleeds in the last 2 years.

Have had an ultrasound and told everything looks normal, though had to have my copper IUD remived last month as it had become displaced and it was causing inflammation.

Consultant who removed IUD was helpfully very non committal over whether I still need to use contraception. NHS site tells me it's unnecessary if you're over 55, even if you're still menstruating.

Utterly fucked off with the whole shebang because it plays havoc with my mood. The awful hormonal low mood, that's plagued me all my life (had PMDD and PND) just descends out of the blue and can last all fucking month, whether I have a period or not! Then it just ups and disappears for a few months, there's no rhyme nor reason to it.

55 and still having them sometimes. I'm so fed up with them, 45 years of this shit! 😣 My gyno confirmed yesterday that my ovaries are still working. They should be able to claim a pension by now.

I have them every month without fail. I wish I could just even skip them at least occasionally. Just come on yet again. Always at the weekend. Feeling grumpy....also hungover as drank too much wine lol. Sympathies

Mine were regular until 58. No sign of any changes. Then one month my period simply didn't arrive and that was it, no more ever again.

caringcarer · 18/04/2026 13:16

My Mum had periods I told she was almost 58. They were very heavy and she became aneamic. She was always exhausted. After the menopause she had more energy and felt better.

UpsidedownisnowNormal · 22/04/2026 09:49

55 today and flooding.....go me! Totally fed up with this crap because the PMDD that plagued me my whole life is now extreme the days before they start. Extreme thoughts of not wanting to be here and then it starts and I go wow thats what was happening. No amount of trialling hrt, anxiety and depression meds have helped. Its just survival now which is not how I'd like to live. Sorry for the downer everyone and solidarity to you all.

Maybe a really thick question but has anyone considered a hysterectomy to escape from the monthly periods?

Needaglowup · 22/04/2026 09:57

This was me last year at 55 was even on a period on my birthday too .. had just started hrt for painful joints and now although have a bleed each month it’s not how my periods were , so think I going through to it now at 56 , but I’ve never had painful periods so am quite sad to see them go to be honest

I did and spoke to my GP about one, but as there was no clinical reason for me to have one other than I was absolutely sick of periods, the answer was no. Heavy and/or irregular periods are a sign of perimenopause so I was effectively told to wait it out.

The mirena seems to be the intervention of choice, but I refused it. In the end I got tranexamic acid and progesterone tablets which helped massively. They've stopped completely now, thank god - I was at the end of my tether.
