Over 55 still having periods

Davidfromcorrie · 26/03/2026 08:03

I am over 55 and still having periods without fail every single month. Everyone else I know has stopped. No sign of meno, no hrt, just absolutely tired of it. Feel weird and elderly having this at my age. Is anyone else over 55 and still going naturally and regularly?

Awful! I suspect this would be me had I not had a Mirena coil fitted recently. I’m 53 and mine were still every 28 days, without fail.

SapatSea · 28/03/2026 17:53

Started when I had just turned 12. Menopause at 59. Had been more irregular from about age 57.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/03/2026 18:00

Still having lots of very irregular bleeding and been on HRT for 7 years. Both my mother and sister stopped at 50 and I’m 55 now.

Had much more bleeding in last year, frequently 2 short bleeds a month.

1000StrawberryLollies · 28/03/2026 18:05

I'm 54. Thought my periods were finally done, as I'd had 6 months without one. Nope! As of yesterday, apparently not 🙄

Supersares · 28/03/2026 20:29

Nearly 54 and still having them. Noticed I’m on the older side compared to others I know who’ve been/going through it. I’ve been peri for about 5 ish years I think so guessing they should stop soon? Did read somewhere that it’s actually a good sign for your general health and a good indication for later in life as it’s a sign you’ll age slower. So not all bad!

Missingthesea · 28/03/2026 20:45

I was 60 and 10 months when i had my last period. I'd honestly started to think I would just keep on having them all my life 😱

@LaurieFairyCake Has your HRT been reviewed?

If you're on sequential you should have a regular withdrawal bleed every 4th week.

Which HRT are you on?

If your periods haven't stopped it's not so good to use combined continuous HRT as it won't control your own cycle.

SirChenjins · 28/03/2026 22:17

Sympathies - mine didn't stop till I was 56, I was just about at the end of my tether with them. Hopefully yours will stop soon.

Therewere5inthebed · 01/04/2026 22:00

I’m 53 and have been in peri for 7/8 years, my periods have always been as regular as clockwork every 26 days since I was 9, lasting 7-8 days of heavy bleeding.

For the last year they’ve been becoming increasingly irregular, some months they’ve been spot on timing wise and either lighter or heavier than usual, I’ve had a few months where I’ve missed one or two and got excited that that was it, only for one to happen the next month.

I’ve had a few really heavy, flooding ones that have lasted a few weeks too. I’m so sick of having them now, I just want to be out the other side with things beginning to settle.

i decided that I didn’t want HRT as I’m on more than enough drugs for another few conditions already and didn’t want anything that would make my periods carry on for longer than they would naturally.

i’m now hoping my next period won’t happen and I’ll have no more so I totally understand where you’re coming from OP

I'm soon to be 56 and still having periods. I do have a Mirena fitted, and the GP said it should help with symptoms but I can't say there's anything major I've noticed. Mum had a radical hysterectomy at 40 so I've got no idea about family history - but my daughters are pretty horrified that they face the same Grin

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 01/04/2026 22:11

I started periods at 13 and at the other end was having regular, much closer together and heavy periods in early 50s. Eventually I got a mirena coil at 54 with a supplement of estrogen gel. I assume that now (57) it would all over, but I'm not taking the coil out anytime soon.

PermanentTemporary · 01/04/2026 22:18

Am about to turn 57 and still having the odd period, they were regular until 55. Started at 14. I’m about to start HRT, tbh I don’t really know what my regime is called, am a bit conflicted about it, symptoms so far are very mild but have been persuaded it’s a good idea.

ChaToilLeam · 01/04/2026 22:18

55 and still having them sometimes. I'm so fed up with them, 45 years of this shit! 😣 My gyno confirmed yesterday that my ovaries are still working. They should be able to claim a pension by now.

Pianoaholic · 01/04/2026 22:21

That's bad news that women can still be having them at 60!
53 here, and still having fairly regular periods. Gaps between are sometimes a bit longer and then I get a really heavy, flooding one. Started periods at 12 I think.
But I have been having a lot of peri symptoms for a while so was hoping my periods would soon stop. Doesn't seem fair that we're putting up with all the awful symptoms and still having periods. Fed up with it.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/04/2026 22:35

jinglingspringbells

evorel patch every 72 hours, continuous 200mg of progesterone

no break, continuous (no coil or contraception)

Miranda65 · 01/04/2026 22:42

Mine were sporadic for years (for a diagnosed reason), started again at 48 and then completely regular until I was 56. Then stopped, and all good.
It is frustrating, OP, but if you've no other symptoms you may also be fortunate enough to have an easy menopause - it will all be fine, and very soon.

Miranda65 · 01/04/2026 22:45

itsthetea · 26/03/2026 21:54

The Peri symptoms getting worse is a clear sign of menopause happening

Some people don't have any symptoms, so periods stopping is the only clue!

Nearly 56 and finally just starting the menopause. Most of my friends were finished late 40’s!! Male GP unconcerned 🤷‍♀️🙄

Hopefully, he's unconcerned because you're being screened appropriately - delayed menopause is associated with an increased risk of several cancers.

I was the same age. I was told that I looked younger than my age.

MajesticWhine · 01/04/2026 23:23

Glad I’m not alone. I‘m 54 and still having them occasionally; I had a new Mirena coil fitted last year which has made them very light. My mother did warn me she had a very late menopause.

AWanderingMinstrel · 01/04/2026 23:32

Started at 12- finished at 60. I suppose the only benefit is I’m less likely to get osteoporosis 😝

HellsBells13 · 01/04/2026 23:36

I started 2 months before my 12th birthday. I finished at 53. I do still get PMT and midmonth pain but no period. I am 56 this month.

Redcrayons · 02/04/2026 00:29

I’m 54 and my last period was in October last year. I first went to the GP when I was 39 with meno symptoms, so I'm hoping that this is finally the end.

patooties · 02/04/2026 00:37

Among my girlfriends (we are 53-57) a few are still going regularly- I am astonished every time one of them refers to it. I’m way past.

Pistachiocake · 02/04/2026 01:05

It's not that uncommon-I think because peri has been all over the news the last few years, people maybe just think about it more? Someone local still has them in her sixties (so I'm told-she isn't family or anything so I have no actual proof!) and there are lots of women who do get pregnant in their 50s.
