GP searching on Google!!!!

Hi to anyone who reads this post.
I was in my doctors for an appointment last week regarding getting hrt, told her I'd had a subtotal hysterectomy three years ago and listed my current symptoms, told her I just can't function properly anymore.
The next thing I know she's on Google reading out about the type of hrt that should be given after said hysterectomy.
Is this normal for Dr's to do? Am I wrong to be really annoyed about it?

Would you prefer she just guessed or gave you a bog standard hrt? Gp's know a little bit about a lot of things but are not experts in everything. Google might have been the fastest way to find the answer rather than scouring medical journals.

Henowner · 07/09/2025 14:17

I've had the same experience, they use Dr Google quite often!

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 07/09/2025 14:18

I doubt if it was Google.

Doctors can check dosages of all drugs on various apps which are available to them.

chipsticksmammy · 07/09/2025 14:18

My doctor sat and googled with me recently when I asked an HRT question.

I guess it depends on the website and if they trust it. HRT regimes and dosage have changed a lot in recent years.

A lot better than an incorrect prescription I guess from an out of date BNF?

FuzzyWolf · 07/09/2025 14:20

My GPs seem to use Google to check everything.

FunnyCradock · 07/09/2025 14:22

The BNF is online.
Likewise the BMS guidelines.
I am really hoping they were searching those online for the latest information & not doing a random google search 🫣

Roseshavethorns100 · 07/09/2025 14:25

It was definitely Google because I saw the page she was on

Is there a bog standard hrt?
I would prefer that she had some knowledge rather than none at all.
Don't they scour various texts and journals when they're studying to be general health practitioners!

Have experienced the same. Meh nowt wrong with a reminder.

She didn't give me a prescription!

They are GPS for a reason, they can't possibly know everything about everything.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 07/09/2025 14:31

Not much different to breaking out a huge BNF tome, which a GP has done many times to check which meds to prescribe to me that won’t/don’t interact with other meds I’m on - or alternative meds to those I’m allergic to. They can’t know every single medication off the top of their head. And, crucially, information changes over time.

WonderingWanda · 07/09/2025 14:33

You clearly want us to say that your gp is incompetent but it seems that no one agrees so far. What exactly are you so upset about? Did she find a reason for your symptoms? Has she suggested a solution?

MissMoneyFairy · 07/09/2025 14:34

She would provably have searched for gp sites on Google, there are some that are recommended and subscription only,

whoboo · 07/09/2025 14:35

Anyone else who gets their information from Google though is apparently insane. That medical degree allows you to see through the misinformation, handy.

Chickenbone123 · 07/09/2025 14:37

Tbh I have 20 years experience in my field. Not medicine but also a very large interdisciplinary field with Latin language and biological components. Sometimes my brain just goes blank. I know where and what I need to access in there and there’s a missing link. By doing a quick google I will see a word of phrase and it all just floods back in. I can recognise what’s correct. So I wouldn’t be worried about this. As unsettling as it may seem.

vinnabawl · 07/09/2025 14:37

Mine often uses Google to check spellings of medications and general info. Never thought anything of it! They’re general practitioners. I’m happy for them to double check rather than pretend to know and guess!

Coffeeishot · 07/09/2025 14:39

HCP always reference things when im in perhaps the search engine is just a gateway to the site they were looking for. In days gone by they would have looked up a book.

Last time I was in the GP was looking up antibiotics and other medication I am on, it isn't googiling like "we.do"

PermanentTemporary · 07/09/2025 14:43

I am a healthcare professional not a doctor. I google stuff a lot. Because I know a lot about my field, my reading of the results is informed and more like a quick skim to see what fits my initial hypothesis, and frankly not the same as someone who’s never heard of the conditions I treat.

In my view, consultants and GPs who know more than you would believe possible about medicine are the first to say ‘I don’t know’ if they don’t, whereas people who’ve done a six week course in massage will tell you what to do about your heath confidently. Be glad you have a GP like this.

I clearly don't want anyone to say anything for me thank you. But I've spent a lot of time seeing shitty doctors that don't listen or reject how your feeling so they can put a plaster on it and move on.
She didn't do anything or find any solution so that's what I'm pissed off about im not upset I'm a grown up.

my GP did the exact same thing while admitting he knew very little about HRT. He prescribed me HRT that made me so
ill I was vomiting at work.

FGS that isn't your doctor's fault.
You should have stopped taking it and gone back for further advice.
Women all react differently to HRT doses.
