GP searching on Google!!!!

Hi to anyone who reads this post.
I was in my doctors for an appointment last week regarding getting hrt, told her I'd had a subtotal hysterectomy three years ago and listed my current symptoms, told her I just can't function properly anymore.
The next thing I know she's on Google reading out about the type of hrt that should be given after said hysterectomy.
Is this normal for Dr's to do? Am I wrong to be really annoyed about it?

Google gives the GP the opportunity to double check the advice they’re giving you is the latest & check for information which might’ve changed. Clearly, they’re not on Google finding you a medicine, they’re fact checking that nothing has changed. Imagine if they just went ahead and prescribed you an HRT based on the course they last attended 2yrs ago. Would it have bothered you if the GP went to their bookcase & opened up a printed book to research information?

What bothers me is that they have no clue on this condition that is always affecting women day in and day out!.
I would have the same annoyance if it had been a book, what's the difference? The fact is they don't know anything about it!!.
Same with heavy painful periods, I was once told that that's what's normal for me ffs.

They’re General Practitioners, not specialists. If you feel you’d benefit from a referral to a specialist, then you should request that.

I had exactly the same with periods. Only after menopause, seeing a specialist, did I learn that the level of pain I experienced from age 11 was absolutely not normal.

I can't believe all these women defending a doctor who knows nothing about HRT. It is shocking how many of my friends have been doled out anti depressants for menopause symptoms,or been denied HRT or told to stop HRT at 60. Or women forced to go private and get into debt doing so because they were desperate.

It's plainly down to misogyny. I wonder how many doctors don't know how to prescribe Viagra?

Morningswim · 07/09/2025 18:48

I google stuff all the time in a similar type of job. It's often better than the search engines within the profession specific websites so a good starting point. The key is what I then do with that information

She might have been using Google to help her find the page on a particular website she was looking for.

I saw the page and it was one I had been on myself, so not one that's just for medical professionals

Absolutely this. People are so quick to complain about things today without any idea what healthcare professionals have to deal with on a day to day basis.

And health professionals are just as quick to dismiss patients without understanding what they deal with on a daily basis!!.

It might be common for women to have hrt but subtotal hysterectomies are not so common…

We don’t have your medical history like your GP. There may be other factors that need to be taken into consideration.

Are they not that common? Do you have statistics on that? Curious to see them!

Am I wrong to be annoyed? Yes
Well you're all wrong.

Perhaps the GP knows you think you know more than they do and wanted to check where you got your info from

I'm not wrong. I certainly do not claim to know more than anyone but I certainly went in with information to hand. Is there something wrong with that?

It was definitely Google because I saw the page she was on

Did you manage to catch the name of the page? I remember a doc using Google about 15/20 years ago and being surprised then but not any more. We're in the digital age, info is available online and so long as they are sticking to reputable websites I think it's normal and ok. GPs are generalists so they know a little bit about a lot of things and I'd rather they Google then don't provide the right treatment or worse dismiss the problem because they don't know the solution.

Rainbow1612 · 07/09/2025 21:13

My GP typed my symptoms into chatGPT a couple of weeks ago. I can't say I was impressed!

Typicalwave · 07/09/2025 21:14

Not at all surprising.

Threepeaks2025 · 07/09/2025 21:16

AI is here to stay. AI will be utilized more in diagnostics and treatment protocols. What is surprising about that?

Same here nothing but crappy doctors telling me what I was experiencing wasn't real, I had one gp tell me I waa going in to often and that nothing was wrong with me it was such bull.
Totally agree with you about women defending the lack of knowledge when according to Google your gp can prescribe hrt.
Exactly true they'd have no problem prescribing viagra.
The same gp said they don't prescribe testosterone as part of hrt treatment because it deepens women's voices. So basically suffer on as you were.

No need to elaborate any further.

10/10 for originality on the name calling 😂

Is there a bog standard hrt?
I would prefer that she had some knowledge rather than none at all.
Don't they scour various texts and journals when they're studying to be general health practitioners!

Of course they do and they have to carry on training when they are a GP - but one of 1000 plus illnesses could walk through their door, they can’t know everything about everything. They would use accredited websites not Reddit!! But why wouldn’t you - for example MIND, Samaritans, cancer UK etc all have amazing resources and signposting for healthcare professionals and the public!

PoorPhaedra · 07/09/2025 21:32

My GP is a specialist in women’s health but she googled. I was looking at the laptop and she clicked on the faculty of reproductive medicine guidelines for HRT mixed with a medicine I take which I think is fine. If the GP uses Google and clicks on mumsnet or Sky news links then you worry.

I won't elaborate and further just as you didn't.

They may have some knowledge but with over 60 types of medications you can prescribe, certain types of HRT being better for different symptoms- sometimes the right thing to do is look it up!! As I said above it’s 1 of 1000+ illnesses people come to the GP with.

More training is needed but you cannot berate someone because they weren’t sure and went on google to get the evidence.

They are human!!!
