Thanks.

I wonder if the quoted average age of 51 us outdated. I don't know anyone in early 50s whose periods have totally stopped ( though I know one person who went into menopause even before she was 40).

This thread is the first time I’ve heard of women over 52/3 having periods! I was little miss average and all stopped by 51. But obviously if 51 is ‘average’ it means there are older and younger women at menopause stage.

54 here and every month regular as clockwork

My DSis is 61 and still having periods. She's started having hot flushes and her periods are now a bit irregular and very heavy. Her GP recently asked if she was still using birth control!! He has offered her a mirena coil to help with the heavy periods but she declined, I think rightly so, as her hormones are all over the place without adding more!

Yes, but apart from one person in their 30s, I don't know anyone whose periods had completely stopped before 50. I wonder how the stats are compiled. They vary from country to country so why not from decade to decade (could the average be going up with better health?).

women who enter menopause late will have a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, and strong bones. are less likely to have osteoporosis than those with early menopause.

I don’t know anyone still having periods past my age among my friends and peers. I’m 53. That’s just anecdotal obviously.

I'd imagine it's always better to have your female hormones for as long as possible or are there any risks with a late menopause?

greengreyblue · 16/11/2024 16:57

I guess more oestrogen for longer would equate to higher oestrogen fed breast cancer risk?

2 months from 50 but I’ve gone a few months with 6 weeks between periods, then dead on 28 days for about 12 months now. It’s been very painful though some months changing tampons which I’ve never had up until now. And I’ve had a very, very heavy flow which again I’ve never had until the last 12 months. Literally having to change every 2 hours including overnight. And then completely stopped the following day.

I have asked two of my old school friends, coming to 54 and still having periods.

50 and still as regular as clockwork.

My DM stopped at 48 and sailed through her menopause. I wonder what mine will be like...

I was a late starter with my periods though - I was nearly 14 and most girls in my year started at least a year or two earlier.

Panicmode1 · 17/11/2024 17:30

I'm 51.5 and until 4 months ago was 28 days, regular as clockwork..but now I'm bleeding every 2 weeks ish and have had a couple of awful flooding incidents when I had to cancel going to work because I was haemorrhaging blood.

I'm fed up as I started when I was 10, have had 4 children and am SO over periods!! I have booked in to see the GP - I have a very long history of ovarian and breast cancer in my family so my GP advised against HRT unless absolutely necessary..I don't really have symptoms apart from irregular bleeding and horrific insomnia - but I've had that my whole life. I want to have my ovaries removed and the gynae was open to it when I was 40, given my family history, but felt it was a bit early for menopause. I wish I'd pushed harder as I think it's going to be more difficult now.

Panicmode1 · 17/11/2024 17:31

Oh and I can't ask my mother about her experiences because she had her ovaries removed due to pre-cancerous cells when she was about my age

DoIhavegreeneyes · 17/11/2024 17:37

I am back on Mirena to try and suppress them and/or make them manageable. I had a year back on the pill then a year off and now Mirena.
