I didn't stop until 56. My poor Mum stopped at 55 after 3 years she started to menstruate again. She was really worried because she thought she'd been through menopause and thought bleeding could be cancer. Consultant told her she'd carry on menstruating until all her eggs were gone. She finally stopped at 61.

Whaaaaaat?! We have thousands of eggs, it's just that they eventually stop maturing and being released into the fallopian tube!

JulietSierra · 09/11/2024 21:12

I’m 50 and regular as clockwork every month. Having said that… I’m a couple of days late this month. Wonder if this could be the month things start slowing down??
I had a pelvic ultrasound a while ago because of pain whilst ovulating. The sonographer commented that they could see some ‘nice, juicy follicles’. Thought my follicles would be dry and crispy by now but apparently not 🤣

LBFseBrom · 09/11/2024 21:13

I had my last period at 51.5. A friend of mine stopped having periods at 56! It's certainly not unusual for fifty.

I’ve read, on the internet, (so must be true😁) that when the Mean average of your last 10 cycles becomes more than 42 days you are most likely in your last year of menstruation.
Mine is sometimes long, sometimes short - personal bests of 12 days and 159 days and average has not yet got above 36 damn it!

that's what I thought but apparently not - most of them die off without maturing

I'm off to crunch some numbers on this one for sure.

Namechanged because it’s outing to those who know me in RL.

I thought my periods had stopped at the age of 54 until I started to bleed with what I thought was a menopausal flood. But then I also thought that the bleeding was just like the miscarriages I had experienced in the past. And then the clots that looked like clusters of grapes arrived.

Long story short I had an unexpected pregnancy coupled/twinned with a molar pregnancy which, because the GP had told me to bleed it out, became septic, although I didn’t realise this until after I’d been admitted to hospital. After the a week in hospital and a D&C the consultant swanned into my room, blithely said “you’ve had a molar pregnancy and this is pre-cancerous so we’ll be referring you to a London hospital for checks and possible chemo” and then disappeared out the door before I could draw breath.

We then went into the first 2020 lockdown so I had to do all the blood tests at home so I would have a cry every time the packet from oncology arrived once a month, this and trying to hide it from my kids who had come home for lockdown.

Anyway, everything is fine but I urge you to a) keep contraception going while you are still having periods and b) if they stop then do regular pregnancy tests. I’m now 59 and my last period was in August.

It’s coming up to nearly 5 years ago and I’m still traumatised by the whole thing.

Still fairly regular at 55 but 62 from one pp - blimey! Thanks @Cloudydayagain - was wondering if I could safely get my copper coil out but think I’ll hold off…

w0nderwall · 10/11/2024 10:27

That sounds really hard @Cloudydayagain but thanks for sharing.

Speak to your GP! And thanks for your kind words.

Hahaha, maybe. But that was my cycle pretty much my entire life ..... Still going at 58. Obviously haven't had enough cycles yet.

TheFlyingHorse · 15/11/2024 22:15

I'm 54 and was regular as clockwork until about a year ago. It's all been a bit random since then...

greengreyblue · 15/11/2024 22:16

No mine stopped at 51. Been two years now. Did you start late?

SirChenjins · 15/11/2024 22:20

Almost 56 and had my last period 3 months ago and a couple of years of erratic periods so I’m hoping that’s it finally happening. I started my periods when I was 11 so am very aware of the increased risk that brings.

Chelmew · 15/11/2024 22:23

BatFaceGiirll · 05/11/2024 20:56

@Juliefaith yes roughly speaking it's 12 months without a period. You could then describe yourself as post menopausal - if you so wanted to!

However, it's not unusual for a period to come after 12 months without. It happens, usually a surge in hormones. Always worth checking it if that happens though

I'm 53 this month and still have periods. They were regular for 35 years - not heavy, normal. They then became horrendous from the age of 47/48 and I knew then I was peri menopausal.

And now - sometimes they are heavy. Sometimes they are light. They come when they want - sometimes there is 9 or 10 weeks with nothing and I think ' err is this it?!' but then I have a normal period.

This month, I came on about 5 weeks ago for a week. Stopped. I then had some light bleeding for about 3 days last week. Stopped. And now? It's started again slightly heavier

So I'm assuming I'm approaching actual menopause now but who knows?

57 and very similar. Last one was September. Fingers crossed that’s it!!

I’ve had enough now

Cece92 · 15/11/2024 22:24

My mums in her 50's in the midst of menopause on hrt patches and she's had a few irregular periods recently after none for couple years. She was really surprised but her GO said it is normal xxxx

KnigCnut · 15/11/2024 22:27

52 and no sign of abatement. Have had peri symptoms for a decade already.

Asked my mother today and she was all done by mid40s. So much for heredity.

tinytemper66 · 15/11/2024 22:47

58 and have had 2 this year. In August after 9 months and again last week!

Topseyt123 · 15/11/2024 23:01

My last one was just over a year ago when I had just turned 57. Before that they had been dreadful for about a decade - ridiculously heavy and flooding so I couldn't wait for them to stop.

Perhaps there might be some supposed benefits to a later menopause, I've heard that too, but there are also huge disadvantages to prolonged flooding every three weeks. Anaemia, feeling virtually housebound, having to spend hours in the toilet wondering whether it would ever slow down (almost called myself an ambulance at 2am once as it had been hours). Also, the expense of needing Tena adult nappies as the only product that stood a chance of containing them!!

I'd rather have stopped several years earlier than I did.

Various things were tried to control it - mirena coil (useless, bled constantly for over a year before insisting it was removed), zoladex injections, removal of a fibroid ..... Nothing worked and they always returned. I was seriously considering pushing for a hysterectomy. Then they just stopped.

If they should ever return again then I will really demand the hysterectomy though.

PrincessOfPreschool · 15/11/2024 23:15
  1. Very regular 26 day cycle. I've had 2 in the past year which came at weird times (one very late then one very early followed it) but apart from that it's like clockwork.
Juliefaith · 16/11/2024 14:42

Hi again. @Topseyt123
I was anaemic in the past; no one told me my heavy periods, long, shorts a lot of clots were related to perimenopause. Made me introvert, scared my bleeding would come anytime. All I read in media, women talked about menopause, nothing about perimenopause. Spoke to female relatives, friends they just flew past their perimenopause. I'm probably the unlucky ones with many symptoms!

I wonder if the quoted average age of 51 us outdated. I don't know anyone in early 50s whose periods have totally stopped ( though I know one person who went into menopause even before she was 40).

tobee · 16/11/2024 15:48

As someone who had a hysterectomy, conserving my ovaries, about 10 years ago, is very interesting.

I'm 56 and assumed I was way past menopause but not really had an idea. Although been told partial hysterectomy hastens it but 🤷🏻‍♀️
