Hello, any women over 50 and still having periods?
Thanks.

Late 50s here. I stopped (finally!) at 53.

At 51 and a quarter, I missed 3 periods in a row (and thought that was it) and then I came on again. Then at 51 and a half, I skipped 5 periods, then came on the week before I was 52! Then I had 3 periods over 7-8 months, then stopped for 6 months!!! Then about 2-3 months after I was 53, I had one period, and this was my last.

I'm 54 and they have been stopping and starting for 2 years. Missed some months, had some light ones, had some normal ones, missed some again. When they stop I have hot flushes. If the hot flushes stop then I know to expect a period! I think the last period was 6 months ago now.

Yep, nearly 55 and pretty much the same minus the hot flushes. It's probably the only peri symptom that I don't have.

They just need to go. I shout at my ovaries every time to 'stop this bleeding nonsense right now' 😂

Garlicpest · 05/11/2024 20:07

Also with all kinds of symptoms - sympathy! Menopause gifted me two food allergies (never had a hint of one before) and a whole bunch of intolerances. Weird skin glitches, volcanic gut issues, migrating hairs, the list goes on ... 😳

Anotherdayanothernight · 05/11/2024 20:11

51 and still like clockwork

Had my last one at 62. First hot flush at 50. I'd say it was the world's longest menopause, but my mum's was also 12 years.

Hi. Did you go to your GP about the peri symptoms and late age?
Thanks

It's not an abnormally late age, Julie. They gave me HRT when the hot flushes started, but my periods didn't stop. After a few years they took me off it and periods carried on, getting more erratic until they eventually were no more.

Juliefaith · 05/11/2024 20:47

Thanks. I am still getting used to the word perimenopause. Heard of Menopause. Is it 12 months no periods as Menopause? What if some women got no periods for 2 months, then a bleed. They have to start counting? Do you count the day one of your bleed or the end of the bleed.. I'm confused.
Someone told me, late menopause women have better protection benefits. Eg. joints.. but I'm getting joints ache already..

@Juliefaith yes roughly speaking it's 12 months without a period. You could then describe yourself as post menopausal - if you so wanted to!

However, it's not unusual for a period to come after 12 months without. It happens, usually a surge in hormones. Always worth checking it if that happens though

I'm 53 this month and still have periods. They were regular for 35 years - not heavy, normal. They then became horrendous from the age of 47/48 and I knew then I was peri menopausal.

And now - sometimes they are heavy. Sometimes they are light. They come when they want - sometimes there is 9 or 10 weeks with nothing and I think ' err is this it?!' but then I have a normal period.

This month, I came on about 5 weeks ago for a week. Stopped. I then had some light bleeding for about 3 days last week. Stopped. And now? It's started again slightly heavier

So I'm assuming I'm approaching actual menopause now but who knows?

BatFaceGiirll · 05/11/2024 20:57

And I wouldn't worry too much about counting days or the start of anything. Won't make a difference overall

Just pop dates in your notes app on your phone. Or note it on a calendar. Just a scribble or whatever.

That way you can see at a glance when you last had a period when you need to look back

CallYourselfAChef · 05/11/2024 20:58

I was 6 months away from being 60 when mine eventually stopped. From the age of 54 to 59, I had the most horrendous periods, was under the hospital and GP to try to sort it out.

Morph22010 · 05/11/2024 21:01

51 and still regular although seem to be getting lighter

OldBoilerOhYes · 05/11/2024 21:05

Nearly 51 and still getting them, though they've been more erratic, and often heavier, the last couple of years. I have skipped a few but then have had them return the next month.

chocolateybuttons · 05/11/2024 21:06

51 and still getting them, although they seem to be coming every couple of weeks at the moment Confused

Dr has tweaked my HRT.

JaninaDuszejko · 05/11/2024 21:20

The average age to go through the menopause is 51 so most women will have some periods in their 50s. But the public discourse now is all about early menopause, I've even seen women on here in their 30s with no symptoms worry about it.

Mum was 55 when she had her final period, she suffered no major symptoms. I'm 53 and have missed 2 periods this year so suspect I may be even older. I had DS in my 40s so was definitely very fertile very back then and didn't miss a period until my 50s.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 05/11/2024 22:50

Mid 50s and it's still business as usual here.
No changes to my usual cycle, no symptoms at all.

My baby sister who is a few years younger than me is out the other side of menopause though, so it can be different even in the same family.

neilyoungismyhero · 05/11/2024 22:52

I didn't stop until I was 55. Had a few heavy periods a few hot flushes and that was that.

Cynic17 · 05/11/2024 23:05

My periods were rare for many years (medical reason), then started again properly at 48 and regular as clockwork until the last one at age 56. Which was annoying, but no other particular menopause symptoms, so really I can't complain.

Patienceinshortsupply · 06/11/2024 20:19

I'm 54 and reading this has made me realise that I've not had one for about 3 months....... but I've had this before and got all excited to have my hopes dashed again Grin

I've not really got any symptoms other than very random odd night sweats but I'm also diabetic so could be that causing those. I'm an irritable old badger at the best of times so nothing unusual in my mood either.

BlessicaBlimpson · 06/11/2024 20:27

Yes, every 25 days, age 51

sagebomb · 06/11/2024 20:31

53 and still bang on regular every 28 days.

Iwantabrightsunnyday · 06/11/2024 20:34

That is crazy. I thought 50

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 06/11/2024 20:44

I'm 53 and they'd been going a little bit irregular for about a year, but now I haven't had one since July. I hope that's it, but probably wishful thinking!

Bigearringsbigsmile · 06/11/2024 20:45

Yep, 52 and still getting them but less regularly I think?

saltysandysea · 06/11/2024 20:58

Yes, like clockwork. Plus the skin woes of a teenager.

Juliefaith · 09/11/2024 21:08

It can be annoying not knowing when the bleeding come. Even the experts can't predict when we end our peri,. I went out and came back and suddenly my period came and then some clots. Thank goodness I was at home. Next time, for precaution I am going to wear a pad . Anyway, lasted for a day and then few days spotting.
