Need to get rid of this bastard migraine

TeamPolin · 31/10/2024 10:22

I'm 48 hours into a hormonal migraine. My head is pounding, my ears are ringing. I feel exhausted. Nausea has thankfully passed. Tested for Covid but it's come up negative. I'm supposed to be taking DS trick or treating tonight. He'll be gutted if I bail on him.

Anyone got any miracle cures? Have tried cold compress, tiger balm, taking magnesium, painkillers, sleep. Migraleve just knocks me out...

Sympathies OP - I had them for years. I found once I'd been sick it would start to ease off so hopefully you'll be ok in a few hours. Never did find anything that helped unless I caught one before it developed with two pink migraleve.

veryyydemure · 31/10/2024 10:26

What pain killers have you tried OP?

have you tried the migraine pack of ibuprofen lysine. It's a stronger ibuprofen dose paired with paracetamol and a can of coke or a redbull? It seems to take the edge of and then 4 hrs later make you sure to take paracemol again and then another dose 4 hours after that to really knock it on its head.

or the Anadin extra paracetamol, aspirin and caffine taken with coke or redbull.

how often do you have them? Go and see your GP they will try you on different things until you find something that works. I have been given Tripitants that make me feel awful but they work for some people. I know how awful is it having a migraine when something is planned with the DC, it's the story of my life. Hope you feel better 💐

You could try caffeine if your stomach is ok.

Make yourself a very, very strong coffee, preferably from beans that are freshly ground.

And drink with half a teaspoon of sugar and your painkiller of choice.

Or you could go to a chemist and see if they have painkillers with in-built caffeine ifyswim.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

veryyydemure · 31/10/2024 10:27

I meant pair the ibuprofen lysine with some paracetamol - not it comes paired with it already sorry

Raspberryfrizzbies788 · 31/10/2024 10:28

Oh yes, cocoa-cola works too sometimes!

AgainandagainandagainSS · 31/10/2024 10:28

Co-codamol plus a very strong coffee. Works every time.

Blarn · 31/10/2024 10:31

Ibuprofen, caffeine and sugar. Those chilled coffee cans are always good if you find coolness soothing for a migraine. And sleep, which I know is sometimes impossible with dc, work, life.

TeamPolin · 31/10/2024 10:32

@veryyydemure (great name btw)

I've tried migraleve - but probably too late to make an impact. It came on whilst I was on a train, I had no meds on me so I couldn't nip it in the bud with a pink migraleve for over an hour. Have taken pink and yellow since then but they've not got rid of it. Have no reached the max number I can take so have switched to ibroprofen and lysine, not making much difference. 😕

Haven't tried caffeine. Will give that a go.

Ibuprofen, aspirin and a full sugar coke. Ice pack on back of neck, feet in hot water. Sleep if you can after you have done all of that

Eviebeans · 31/10/2024 10:33

Have you got any coke, the cola kind. Works for me every time.

BeMintBee · 31/10/2024 10:36

Peppermint oil on a cotton pad to keep nearby and smell. This is a new one for me but I’m finding it quite helpful.

Salty pretzels

Mudflaps · 31/10/2024 10:40

Migraleve never worked for me, I had a three day hormonal migraine every month (twice some months) for years, eventually I was prescribed Zomig which helped greatly, the rapidmelt version, not the tablet. I'm pretty sure they are available without prescription if you chat to a pharmacist.

veryyydemure · 31/10/2024 10:43

haha thank you! needed to nc and all that's in my head atm is very mindful 😂

Definitely give caffine a go, get a big can of redbull and knock it back! Also another thing that kind of helps paired with caffine and pain killers is McDonald's. Could be the salty fries that do something. Maybe see if you can stomach a McDonald's.

Chimchar · 31/10/2024 10:51

I saw a tip on Instagram the other day...

It said to put your feet ina. Bath or bowl of hot water...as hot as you can stand. Sit for 10 mins or so, and the migraine is relieved.

It was something to do with blood vessels....

I have no idea if this works, but thought it might be worth a mention!

Feel better soon. Flowers

TeamPolin · 31/10/2024 11:01

Am sipping Coke and will try the feet in hot water thing. Honestly, will try anything at this point....

Sumatriptan- this has changed my life. Hormonal migraines were ruining my life. No take a sumatriptan, feel a bit dizzy spaced out initially but that and the migraine are gone within an hour. Sometimes 20 minutes.

Salty McDonalds fries are always part of my migraine hangover diet!

Soonenough · 31/10/2024 11:18

I too recommend a hot bath with a cold cloth on my neck and forehead. Works well for me . Also either 900mg aspirin or paracetamol plus original Coke . Hope it passes they can be horrendous.

RevelryMum · 31/10/2024 11:22

Apparently putting your feet in hot water helps . I used to have to take sumatriptan and eventually stopped taking the contraceptive pill as that was the cause for me

WutheredOut · 31/10/2024 11:36

I take prescription triptans specifically for hormonal migraines that I have to take for three days at the beginning of my period - when you get over this attack speak to your gp about frovatriptans - I can’t lie they don’t always work as I often miss the signs that I am getting my period / migraine as I am perimenopausal and nothing happens when I expect it to!

If miss the signs and the migraine take hold I try the following in addition to the triptans

Depending on how many other painkillers you’ve taken - I was advised by my GP that 3 x 300mg dispersible aspirin would help - but not if you have taken ibuprofen already obviously

Ice pack on the back of your neck can help and try to get some rest

I always crave really crunchy full of flavour crisps and Diet Coke … I don’t know if that actually helps but mentally it makes me feel better

Hope you feel better later - I have let my kids down so often because I can’t function through a migraine - but if you are able to rest until later today hopefully you might feel less like a zombie

AnotherVice · 31/10/2024 11:37

900mg of aspirin. Took me 40 years of migraines before I figured this out. Total game changer. Migraines really are the worst.

TeamPolin · 31/10/2024 11:37

Update: Full-fat Coke is working! Pain easing off! Omg, you ladies are amazing!

IchiNiSanShiGo · 31/10/2024 11:42

I find the soluble co-codamol and going to bed for an hour with a damp flannel over my eyes does the trick for me. Mine tend to be brought on by a combination of stress, lack of sleep, and crap food choices though, rather than hormonal.

At least if you’ve dosed up on meds you’ll make a great zombie for trick or treating this evening 🧟‍♀️👻

TheRealMummyPig · 31/10/2024 11:43

3 aspirin or a sumatriptan which you can get in a small amount over the counter.
