Need to get rid of this bastard migraine

TeamPolin · 31/10/2024 10:22

I'm 48 hours into a hormonal migraine. My head is pounding, my ears are ringing. I feel exhausted. Nausea has thankfully passed. Tested for Covid but it's come up negative. I'm supposed to be taking DS trick or treating tonight. He'll be gutted if I bail on him.

Anyone got any miracle cures? Have tried cold compress, tiger balm, taking magnesium, painkillers, sleep. Migraleve just knocks me out...

Sumatriptan- this has changed my life. Hormonal migraines were ruining my life. No take a sumatriptan, feel a bit dizzy spaced out initially but that and the migraine are gone within an hour. Sometimes 20 minutes.

Same. I've just got a prescription for these and they are amazing.

For otc remedies I found Nurofen Migraine to be the best but get a prescription if you can.

Pegs between your thumb and index finger
There is a pressure point that sometimes helps me.
Literally put a clothes peg on it

Nitgel · 31/10/2024 11:56

i always use ibupofen with codeine for these type of headaches. from over the counter.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 31/10/2024 11:59

Ibuprofen and paracetamol at the same time was the only thing that worked for me.
Always check the dosage though

unpackthat · 31/10/2024 13:12

The feet in roasting water helps (I just stand in shower)

unpackthat · 31/10/2024 13:13

With only water on my feet

Seasidewalker · 31/10/2024 13:56

Sounds like it might be too late, I need to catch mine early or I'm laying down on a dark room work a bucket 🤢

Caffeine helps me, salt and vinegar crisps (no idea why the crisps!).

Co-codermol and prochlorperazine tablets which go under your lip. Apparently this is the same as migralieve but is much cheaper and gives more flexibility in dose.

Hope you are feeling better

IBlameTheDog · 31/10/2024 15:08

Coke works better if you stir it up to get rid of the fizz x

wheresthebigcarrot · 31/10/2024 15:19

I always (and probably ill advisedly) take 2 aspirin and 2 ibuprofen at the same time, drink a pint of water, put a cold pack on my head and wait for sleep. Usually 40 mins of agony and then I sleep. I also usually weirdly wake up really really refreshed after a migraine. I think my body views them as it's off and on switch.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/10/2024 15:21

Sumatriptan is the only thing that touches mine.

Toddlerteaplease · 31/10/2024 15:21

Anadin extra and full fat coke also help.

ConstitutionHill · 31/10/2024 15:25

Diclofenac/voltaren suppository.

Saved me through menopause peri-menopause vomiting migraines. Doesn't completely kill the headache but you take it without vomiting. It takes about 75% of the edge off so you can function/travel etc. I travel a lot for work and I had these on me all the time for the 3-4 years of menopause otherwise there would of been days I could not have left my hotel and boarded a plane.

Thankfully now I'm through that, I virtually never have headaches.

I saw a tip on Instagram the other day...

It said to put your feet ina. Bath or bowl of hot water...as hot as you can stand. Sit for 10 mins or so, and the migraine is relieved.

It was something to do with blood vessels....

I have no idea if this works, but thought it might be worth a mention!

Feel better soon. Flowers

I had a horrible migraine last week, painkillers didn’t touch it. My daughter had previously seen the above tip, and prepared a bowl of hot water for me. It worked enough for me to doze, and when I woke the migraine had gone. Definitely worth a try!

inthekitchensink · 31/10/2024 15:26

Alka seltzer for some reason works brilliantly for me, if you stick a berocca in with it it’s much easier to drink

Wavingnotdrown1ng · 31/10/2024 15:35

Second a triptan prescription or cocodamol. Once you have a prescription, a chemist can sell you two if you run out
But also - ice cold, sugar Coke with ice in to take out the fizz( or you’ll vomit). Coke alleviates nausea and makes the painkillers work more quickly
Jammy Dodgers
Ready salted crisps
McDonald’s fries and a coffee
A boiled sugary sweet
( Not all the food stuff at once, obviously !)

A cold flannel on the forehead and a sleep mask and also a hot water bottle on my neck

Migraine sufferer for 50+ years and still getting them after menopause. What really made the difference were the triptans and beta blockers. If you having monthly hormonal ones then see a GP and have ‘migraine kits’ in the car, at work and in your bag to nip them. Speaking as a veteran of jumping off public transport and vomiting, including all over myself! Take care x

I have had severe migraine with aura since my teens.

I recently discovered Lysine Ibuprofen. It works like magic for me. Nothing else has ever worked.

afaloren · 31/10/2024 16:22

The three C’s work for me. Caffeine, codeine, chocolate.

minesatea · 31/10/2024 16:27

Nothing works for me. I can’t even keep water down. I hadn’t had one since January and have had 2 bad ones in the space of 6 days. I had a hysterectomy recently and hope it’s not connected to that.

BarnacleNora · 31/10/2024 16:55

Triptans work for me. I also take a daily dose of topiramate (had to be referred to a neurologist for that through my gp) which acts as a prophylactic. This has now reduced the evil 'can't do anything except be in a dark room and whimper' migraines to maybe twice a year. Previously it was at least once a month. For all the others I can head them off with either sumatriptan or Rizatriptan (sumatriptan available in chemists, both can be bought online but I get riz prescribed. Just helpful to know if you run out of prescription or sometimes it's cheaper to buy direct online).

Caffeine also sort of helps but never cures. And carbs. Savoury carbs. As long as I haven't passed the point of no return and can still face eating something!

Co-codamol is often reccomended but I would urge caution as this can often be a 'false friend' for migraines and cause rebound headaches in some people. It may sort the migraine initially but then cause further nasty headaches later on in the week or with increased use. With regular use it can also make migraines worse rather than curing.

I've been getting adverts recently for a device that goes in your ear and adjusts the pressure-something to do with increasing/decreasing the pressure on nerves inside your ear canal and side of head that are responsible for migraine and tmj pain. I'm very intrigued but have no idea if it's junk science or not! It is only £20 odd quid though so o might give it a go!

BarnacleNora · 31/10/2024 16:57

Oh and an ice cap o got off Amazon. Looks like swim cap but goes down over the eyes as well. Far superior to the ice strips that go on the forehead because when I have a migraine I need cold all over-top of head, over eyes, temples etc. this does the job really well. Just store in freezer and it's ready to go (although does need a tea towel between the cap and your head to avoid freezer burn!)

MeMyCatsAndI · 31/10/2024 17:02

Codeine and a little bit of caffeine like a red bull works for me.
I get them 2-3 times a week.

Sumatriptan works for me, too. I don't even get dizzy or spaced out, but I do usually get a cold nose.

Ooh I've been considering getting one of these to save me having to hold various ice packs on my head. Going to order one now, do you recommend a specific one?

OP- glad ot started easing a bit. I didn't mention in my original post but I'm another one who agrees with the salty food too, ready salted crisp or McDonald's when you can face eating!

TeamPolin · 01/11/2024 09:58

Well I made it trick or treating! The caffeine and hot water thing on feet got me upright. Have the inevitable migraine hangover today. Super tired. But still doing a lot better. Mumsnet saved Halloween in our house!

Full fat coke.

And also discovered smelling smalts recently. They really help even though they're gross
