Utrogestan hopelessness

Moredarkchocolateplease · 02/04/2023 15:23

I have just finished my third round of utrogestan.

I feel absolutely hopeless. Like nothing will ever get better again. I feel numb. I am crying, can barely be civil with my family, am livid about everything and I'm swearing at the dog. I'm utterly exhausted too, the deep sleep makes me so lethargic.

I felt like this in month one and two but then increased my oestrogen for month three and felt amazing for a week and hoped it might over ride the progesterone depression.

This is how I have felt on three different pills and to an extent even in my natural cycle I would have days like this around ovulation. But everyone said body identical is gold standard.

Have you felt like this and if so what option worked best/would you go for?

Vaginal application of the utrogestan
The coil
Another kind of progestin
Stopping HRT despite how amazing I felt for one week out of the 12!

Thanks in advance for any useful feedback!

@YukoandHiro when I'm on just the oestrogen it's lovely. So worth it for that definitely.

But I definitely can't cope with this longterm.

@WolfFoxHare you made me laugh out loud then😁i shall think of it as my chuff going forwards.

It’s laugh or cry, really! And I feel much more able to laugh when taking it vaginally!

Moredarkchocolateplease · 02/04/2023 19:35

💐💐@WolfFoxHare here's to more (some) laughter. 🤞🤞🤞🤞

I find my 12 days of utrogestan difficult. I take mine for the first 12 days of each month so tonight is day two. Can I use it vaginally tonight if I took it in tablet form yesterday. How far up do I need to put it? Should I put a tampon in after to stop it falling out?!

Yes, you absolutely can start taking it vaginally straight away. I mix it up sometimes, I take it orally if say I’m staying over somewhere. You do need to take both tablets vaginally but you shouldn’t use a tampon to keep them in, just do it straight before bed, so you’re lying down for several hours. Some of it will almost inevitably end up in your toilet if you go for a wee in the night but that’s why you take both tablets - you actually need a much lower dose vaginally than orally because it’s going right where you need it, so to speak, but some won’t be absorbed that way because of gravity.

WolfFoxHare · 02/04/2023 19:37

Shove it up as far as you can reach. I balance it on the end of my middle finger.

SeasonsBleatings · 02/04/2023 19:40

I've just finished my first month on Utrogestan, taken orally alongside application of an Evorel 75 patch. I haven't found it either makes me more sleepy or sad but the increased dose of Evorel from 50 has made a massive difference as the lower dose left me really quite miserable and helpless. Really hope you can find a dose and application method which works for you and feel better soon.

Camdenish · 02/04/2023 19:44

Great, I’ll give it a try. I hope it works for you too @Moredarkchocolateplease. I feel a lot better on the utrogestan than I did when I started, but I still feel down and difficult. I’m dealing with some awful personal stuff and the thought of voluntarily making myself feel shit is not appealing. I was even thinking of skipping a month but thought it foolish. I’ll try vaginally. Thanks

WolfFoxHare · 02/04/2023 19:48

I do miss every other month @Camdenish but it’s really not recommended… I just would have had to stop HRT altogether if I’d stuck on taking it monthly.

Progesterone has always made me like this, I used to get PMDD for 10+ days a month. I didn’t even bother taking Utrogestan orally due to bad past experiences with mini pill (I get progesterone related migraines with aura and have a high risk for DVT/heart disease). I did use combined patches but again got migraines and terrible depression /anxiety.

i did a few months of oestrogen only (patches) and felt amazing but then got a roasting due to risk to womb lining, and then last month used Utrogestan vaginally for 12 days and was absolutely fine. I was so pleased else I’d have to have stopped the oestrogen which I love.

i also use vaginal oestrogen due to atrophy, which has helped too.

Good luck

I've just had a weeks worth of migraines after 2 weeks of the progesterone in patch.

Switching to vaginal Utrogestan this month. Fingers crossed it helps! 🤞🤞🤞

Of course you can. Just pop them up there as far as you can. Lying down knees up in bed helps me. Do it last thing at night & it's fine. It won't fall out.

I felt so dreadful when taking Utrogestan for just half the month, would feel utterly depressed, so now take it everyday, and don't have that dreadful sorrow for 2 weeks each month. Odd that taking it every day works but it really does for me.

Runaround50 · 02/04/2023 21:22

Mirena coil works for me.
Took a while to settle and felt grim for a few days. Now, I use with a 100 patch.

I'm wondering about trying this next!

Oh gosh, I hate the progesterone weeks, just dire.

Some nights now when I just cannot face shoving my fingers up my chuff 😂 I take it orally and I don’t tend to have a ‘bad’ day afterwards so I think there’s a cumulative/averaged effect.

I think they would fit in the vaginal applicator supplied with Canesten pessary - so it might be worth trying that?

I'm in same boat of finding Utrogestan the devils drug...

Touty · 02/04/2023 21:54

Hi, utrogestan is awful stuff, I had the same problems, I am now taking cyclogest and feel much better.

Camdenish · 02/04/2023 22:11

Right oh, I’ll give it a go with the up-chuffing starting from this evening.

SamR36 · 03/04/2023 16:30

Im intolerant to progesterone, so i take mine differently every other day, one day orally the next vaginally, im on 100mg continious so had no other option. I find this sort of works for me. Im hoping to add in testosterone to help with
fatigue, mood, & oomph! 🙄
I also bought canistan combi for the applicator as i find this works best. I sterilise it after use. I found the ones i bought online flimsy.
I dont think hrt is what its made out to be tho tbh. I was expecting to feel like my old youthful self. Bit of a slap in the face really cos i dont.
(50 yr old, been on hrt 1 year. Post meno, apart from false bleed when starting hrt)

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 03/04/2023 16:40

This is really weird - I got my utrogestan with a pack of disposable applicators, one per day (which I'm washing and reusing as I hate the waste). The GP did initially prescribe me the avoiding miscarriage dose however so that may have something to do with it (not sure they're 'meant' to prescribe vaginally but think they can off-licence)

SamR36 · 04/04/2023 14:12

I asked for applicators & my pharmacists eyes nearly popped out of his head! He was like "oh no, we don't supply, these are oral use only" they are all exact same, oral or vaginal. So i bought the canistan combi for applicator, sold it to me, no questions asked. Pharmaceuticals for you ay!

TBH I don't like the applicators.

I got some with the 200mg Utrogestan but (bit of a long story) as I pay for it privately, it's very expensive (more than 2x the 100mgs) and it comes with an applicator for each capsule (so a huge waste of plastic.)

I didn't find the applicator helpful because sometimes the capsule remained stuck in the end of it. If you use another type of applicator, you may find the same problem because the capsule may be too far inside it and not come out when you use the plunger!

Moredarkchocolateplease · 04/04/2023 14:50

I've decided to go to my GP and see what she suggests is the best course of action bearing in mind everyone's advice.

I'm already feeling better today, sun's out and I took my last utrogestan on saturday.

Last week I broke plates I was so angry, cried every single day, had horrific thoughts (they werent so much intrusive as constant from waking to sleeping) and was foul to everyone in my family.

I know there will be a solution out there which works! 🤞

I am now thinking these must be what I have, do I not need 200mg?

You need to take 200mg for half cycle or if gp agrees 100mg every day.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 04/04/2023 17:37

Phew, am 12 days per month so all good
