Just can't sleep

ParsleyPot · 10/12/2019 23:36

Is there anyone else who is really tired all day, but still can't sleep at night?

I don't drink alcohol or caffeinated anything.

I exercise 30 - 60 mins daily, Pilates or swimming.

On HRT gel and progesterone tablets.

All tips, even the obvious are welcome.

TIA Smile

Just to say, you're not alone. Following with interest.

I'm just the same knackered every night then I can't sleep! Waking up every 40 mins to an hour in a hot sweat. Exhausted the next day. I'm not on hrt yet I'm a bit worried bout the side effects. Any tips welcome!!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 12/12/2019 12:58

I've been on HRT for a while. It has helped with everything except my sleep. I take Magnesium supplements which are meant to help - not sure if they do but worth a try for the small cost.

JaneJeffer · 12/12/2019 13:14
Try this. Technique at 2.43. The black hammock in a dark room puts me to sleep straight away.
andpancakesforbreakfast · 12/12/2019 17:24

Is your problem (not) falling asleep, or sleeping well for 1 hour or 2 but then waking up and never going back to sleep? Or both?

ChocolateOrangery · 12/12/2019 17:33

I'm joining in as, an exhausted non-sleeper (struggle to fall asleep, and often wake at 2, 3 or 4am for hours!) every time I think I've found a solution it 'wears off' but I've had some success with measured breathing (in for 4, hold for 7, out for 8) and box breathing (in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4) Repeat as many times as you can. Also counting backwards from 300 sometimes works to send me back to sleep. Good luck and watching with interest

Another menopausal struggling with sleep, I seem to be wide awake at 5am tired and cross.
Gentle audiobooks and noise cancelling headphones work a bit.
Pride and Prejudice is on BBC sounds.

Chocs44 · 12/12/2019 20:08

I fall asleep within half an hour to an hour using meditation apps on you tube- Jason Stephenson is my favourite. But then I wake within two hours and throughout the night if I wake at 5 then that's it for the night! I just feel like I never get into a deep sleep I wake up feeling exhausted before the day even starts!!

Aquamarine1029 · 12/12/2019 20:12

Magnesium supplements have really helped me. I also have Alexa play thunderstorm sounds during the night and that helps, too. Very soothing.

TimeforanotherChange · 12/12/2019 20:12

Me. Was always an insomniac...now even if I drop off I have really vivid dreams and wake up exhausted or I wake in the middle of the night and can't get off again. At least when I was younger when I finally slept I slept like the dead.Sad

ParsleyPot · 12/12/2019 20:21

Thanks for replies and welcome to those fellow non-sleepers.

It's both, Pancake.

I've just watched the video JaneJeffer and I'm going to try the tips mentioned this evening.

Chocolateorangery I have tried this from 100 (and reached zero), I've nit thought to try it from 300 - I'll give it a go!

I'll also research magnesium supplements Chocsalty.

Good idea Turnip. I sometimes listen to podcasts in bed, but only if alone - it's a little antisocial when I'm sharing!

I've just noticed there are a lot of chocolate names on this thread! Crown Wink

I find it helps to never, ever, ever look at the clock. As soon as I see the time I have negative thoughts: Surely it can't be only 1am? ...2:10 that's only 70 minutes since last time... 3:39 ffs etc. In the end I'm waking up just to see what time it is. If I turn the clock to the wall I find I sleep better after a couple of nights, when my brain realises there's nothing to wake up for.

ChocolateOrangery · 12/12/2019 22:37

I've just noticed there are a lot of chocolate names on this thread!

Maybe as we're all reliant on chocolate to survive!!

Smallblanket · 13/12/2019 06:48

Another non sleeper here. I'm not on HRT but was hoping if did, it would help with sleep
?
Last night I left the radio on low with the election results on - slept quite well!

Lunaballoon · 13/12/2019 07:04

HRT helped me because though I could usually drop off to sleep ok, I’d often wake up about an hour later with palpitations that could last another couple of hours.

I still wake up annoyingly early but I guess I need less sleep these days. I can survive on a minimum of 6 hours and will usually catch up the following night. I find it best not to stress about it and reading my kindle on a dim light helps to make me drowsy again.

Dontdisturbmenow · 14/12/2019 19:03

I'm joining the club! Like all, it's a bit of everything. Usually manage to fall asleep ok, but sometimes won't do so for hours. Then there's the waking up at 4:30 and can't get back to sleep. Or there's waking up 10 times a night do never get into deep sleep.

And then there are those nights when it's all tgree! I had two of these in a row and I'm going out tonight. Feel like curling in bed reading my book! The worse is others not understanding and when I'll start yawning, struggling to get into conversations and I'll say I'm leaving at 11pm, I'll be told I'm abode and party pooper! And because of all the stimulation it will be an other night of no sleep. My OH is having a quick nap right next to be snoring his head off. I hate him :)

ParsleyPot · 18/12/2019 00:41

Welcome fellow insomniacs. Bear

I've been dosing up on chamomile tea this evening, but have been lying here for an hour and a half so far just waiting for those zzz to kick in.

I've just given in and reached for my phone to help pass the time.

Crazy, 'cause I feel seriously tired.

I’m having a bad spell at the moment. Have had about 4 hours sleep each night for a week. So fed up.

Dontdisturbmenow · 18/12/2019 12:19

Stress definitely makes it worse. It's a vicious circle.

ParsleyPot · 19/12/2019 11:38

Poor you @SeaViewBliss.

I really know how you feel. Thanks

I’m jumping on board

LucyLeak · 19/12/2019 20:09

I take 100mg of progesterone at bedtime and I'm out like a light for a good 8 hours.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 19/12/2019 20:15

I use amitryptiline to help me sleep. It works really well on the whole.

When I’m bad, l use sour cherry capsules (on Amazon) which have natural melatonin in.

I also find the Bach flowers night remedy quite good, but weirdly it gives me heartburn

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 19/12/2019 20:17

I also saw someone who did EDMR for sleep. That was the helpful
