OMG Having a Period After 15 Months of No Periods!

Icequeen01 · 24/03/2018 09:03

I'm in shock. I thought I had gone through the menopause! I am nearly 57 and I haven't had a period since the first week of December 2016. Woke up his morning with a slight ache in my back. Just gone to the loo and OMG I have a flaming period! I also have a period pain (forgotten how crap they are!). I've only got some thin panty liners in the house as I got rid of all my sanitary towels a couple of months ago. Do you think my DS18 would mind if I got him up and asked him to pop to the shops for sanitary towels? (😀 joking!).

Has anyone else thought they were through the menopause only to get a period after so long?

Well finally tomorrow is the day! My blood pressure is now under control and I will finally be having my biopsy and hysteroscopy! The hospital rang me last Thursday to say they could do my procedure tomorrow if I managed to get 3 normal BP readings and I had my final reading done today and all was good. So relieved to finally get this done and fingers crossed all will be fine.

Flowers best of luck.

Murinae · 04/06/2018 21:27

@Icequeen01 just seen your update. Good luck for tomorrow. I’ll keep my fingers crossed all goes well.

Brightonmum1 · 04/06/2018 22:37

Hi Icequeen,
I went for my hysteroscopy this afternoon, I just wanted to wish you all the best for tomorrow and reassure you that it’s painless other than period stomach cramps and bleeding.
They do give you some idea after the procedure... in my case they couldn’t see anything that concerned them but they did take “scrapings” and I now have a 2-3 week wait for the biopsy results. I will keep everything crossed for you.
Sending you big comforting hugs 😘

Icequeen01 · 04/06/2018 23:05

Thanks @Brightonmum1 that's reassuring to hear and so pleased to hear yours went so well. I'm still so surprised at how many women go through this.

Thanks @Murinae and @NickyNora for your good wishes. Hopefully I will be able topost tomorrow with some good news!

Hi OP, joining your thread very late in the day and haven't read it all. I had unexplained bleeding after years of none and was fast tracked for scan and hysteroscopy under local which I found excruciating. The consultant couldn't get into my womb so referred me for a general. I was also told I had polyps and thickened endometrium. 2nd hysteroscopy and Dr couldn't get in (said I had fibroids) however it was pain free. I finally went private and had a 3rd hysteroscopy under general and they got in and found 1 polyp, no fibroids, no thickened endometrium-in fact my womb was fairly healthy for a menopausal woman. No pain, just a bit like the lower back/belly ache you get with a period and a bit fuzzy for a few days from the GA. Hope all goes well and you can put your feet up for a few days.

Brightonmum1 · 05/06/2018 18:55

How did you get on today Icequeen? I’ve been thinking of you. 🤗

Icequeen01 · 05/06/2018 21:24

That's really sweet of you @BrightonMum1. Well it's great news - my cervix is completely normal and they were so pleased with what they saw they didn't even feel it was necessary to take a biopsy! To say I am relieved would be the understatement of the year. Suddenly a big worry has lifted.

There is one slight mystery though and it seems very similar to @SOupertrouper's post earlier today (thank you for taking the time to post Souper it was much appreciated,). They didn't find any fibroids in my cervix even though I was told during my ultrasound scan that my cervix was full of them. My DH and I even saw them on the screen. I spoke to the Dr who carried out my procedure today about this and she said the fibroids were probably outside the cervix which would explain why she didn't see them as they don't check that area. What she couldn't explain was why the person who did the ultrasound said she couldn't use the vaginal probe (not sure if that's the medical term) to check the lining of the cervix as there was no reason she couldn't have got the probe in. My DH remembers her saying it would be like trying to go over hills and round bends to avoid the fibroids. This was the person that didn't record the fact I had even had an ultrasound and didn't send a report to my consultant with her findings and it was only picked up when I phoned the hospital to ask why I had been sent another date. I think that says it all really.....

But putting that aside I have the all clear and don't even have to go back to see my consultant so I am more than happy. The Dr said she thought the period would be a one off and my body just having a last surge. She said I might get a few hot flushes etc (which I have had loads of these past 6 weeks) but said these would gradually stop. I can cope with the hot flushes as they are quite short lived. I'm feeling very tired tonight and feel as though I have a period pain but haven't even had to take a painkiller.

So I would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who took the time to advise, share their stories and generally hold my hand. I can't tell you how much you all helped me.

Icequeen01 fwiw - I've been through all that too. Hysteroscopy and biopsy which came back normal, after having coil removed and having a dark brown 'bleed'.

Bit of thickening of the womb lining so coil fitted [again]. Now having another dark brown 'bleed' so hope it's just the 'last blast' you spoke about! I did get caught out on a work's day out so had to ask one of my colleagues to help me out.Blush

Hot flushes gone - can't remember the last one and now off anti-depressants that I was taking for vicious mood swings.

Hope that's it! At 54 it should be.

Good luck and may the menopause be with you! Flowers

Icequeen01 · 06/06/2018 22:56

Thank you @MrsMuddlePluck. I never thought I would look forward to going through the menopause but it can't come quickly enough for me now. I'm almost 57 so surely I have done my time and should be at the end soon!

@Jenken48 Thank you for that hilarious link. So many things I can relate to 😀

I’m glad it went well for you @Icequeen01 and that they found nothing. I felt really like i had PMT yesterday and could have bitten anyone’s head off. I do feel as though I might have another bleed soon. If I do I’m off to get a mirena put back in and keep it in for another few years. I can’t cope or don’t want to cope with having periods again!

Icequeen01 · 07/06/2018 10:22

I don't blame you @Murinae. Why suffer needlessly? I still get that feeling that I am about to start my period too. I don't seem to get the headaches and PMT that I used to get - or perhaps it's just that I am always bad tempered these days! I have started keeping towels and a spare pair of pants in my handbag again as I don't feel confident that it's not going to happen again. So frustrating when you think you have gone through it.

OP posts:
Murinae · 07/06/2018 14:29

I know the feeling. I went away with some friends at the weekend and was worried I would bleed on the hotel bed again! I have also started carrying round towels and tampons in my handbags and work bags.

MrsMuddlePluck · 11/06/2018 18:12

After last post, I am still spotting dark brown / black - that's 10 days now. Hysteroscopy was fine; biopsy was negative. Coil refitted to stop some thickening of womb lining, so why am I still bleeding ' spotting?

I've been menopausal for at least 5 years!

QueenoftheNights · 11/06/2018 18:40

I've been menopausal for at least 5 years!

You had your very last period at 49? Menopause is the date of your last period ever and we are called 'menopausal' if we have a full year( and the rest of our lives!) with no natural period.

QueenoftheNights · 11/06/2018 18:42

ps If you have had a coil (Mirena) before you won't know if you were post menopause or not.

Icequeen01 · 11/06/2018 20:35

Really sorry to hear that @MrsMuddlePluck, how annoying for you but at least you can feel reassured it's not something nasty. Could it be something like fibroids as they can cause bleeding and presumably wouldn't be affected by the coil? My fibroids are outside my cervix and couldn't be seen when they did my recent procedure.

OP posts:
MrsMuddlePluck · 27/06/2018 22:18

Queenofthenights by way of explanation - I had breast cancer 13 years ago, so was expecting early meno anyway. Had coil 'just in case' and then forgot all about it until I had this mystery bleed.

MrsMuddlePluck · 27/06/2018 22:20

Had my last period nearly 10 years ago which is why Nurse said coil hadn't been effective for years and best to have it out in October '17. It was after that that I started to spot, hence my worry

Denise58 · 02/11/2018 14:12

Advise please I am 58 and had I little brown spotting have not had a period for 12 months and the last one was the same just a bit of brown spotting had the usual period pain tender boobs and nipples the week before but now the spotting has started all that has disappeared am upto date with all my smear tests and they were all normal has anyone experienced anything similar please

Bellaciao · 02/11/2018 17:37

Even though you have the usual hormonal signals (period pain and tender boobs) at your age, and having gone 12 months without a period I would still l get checked out - you are probably just a late menopauser - but you might as well go the doc and ask to be referred for a scan just to make sure and be on the safe side.

Herewegoagain12 · 11/11/2018 20:43

After 10years and almost 60 I am having a period, had examination at doctors now referee for hosp;app; is there any good news on this. Google is full of negativity.

Twinkle1971 · 07/04/2019 23:55

Hi, I nearly fainted tonight when I went to the loo to find I was bleeding after having no periods for 13 months, my doctor told me I was peri menopause, is this possible?? I thought if I was clear for a year, I would have no more bleeding?? I am 47 years old. Anyone got any thoughts about this, I would be most grateful. X

Honeychild54 · 17/06/2019 22:42

Hi everyone. I hope everyone here has been given good news.
I have the same issue. 13 months after my last period i had about four days of a light period which was exactly two months ago. Now I started again a couple of days ago and today it is just like my periods used to be. Heavy and bright red. Both times I have been spotty, bloated, had tender breasts and felt irritable. I'm 52. Strangely before the 13 month gap they were regular and i have been lucky not to have experienced much in the way of peri symptoms. I'm an aspie, so I'm used to social anxiety and crying meltdowns. Had them all my life. My temperature control has also always been a bit off kilter at times, especially when stressed. Perhaps I should pluck up courage to see my GP.
