OMG Having a Period After 15 Months of No Periods!

Icequeen01 · 24/03/2018 09:03

I'm in shock. I thought I had gone through the menopause! I am nearly 57 and I haven't had a period since the first week of December 2016. Woke up his morning with a slight ache in my back. Just gone to the loo and OMG I have a flaming period! I also have a period pain (forgotten how crap they are!). I've only got some thin panty liners in the house as I got rid of all my sanitary towels a couple of months ago. Do you think my DS18 would mind if I got him up and asked him to pop to the shops for sanitary towels? (😀 joking!).

Has anyone else thought they were through the menopause only to get a period after so long?

I’ve just got my scan appointment through for the 15th May.

Icequeen01 · 09/05/2018 21:38

That's great news. I'm sure all will be fine but let us know how you get on. I've heard nothing more following my unsuccessful ultra sound but have my biopsy procedure coming up in a couple of weeks.

Mine just says it’s for a transvaginal scan and says it will just take 5-10 mins. Doesn’t mention biopsy. Stupid thing is I work in a hospital but the scan is in another one 45 mins drive away as I don’t live in the same health board area as where I work.

Murinae · 13/05/2018 23:54

Well smear test cane back negative so that’s at least one good thing.

Murinae · 15/05/2018 18:58

Went for my scan. He said the womb lining looked thin (which apparently is good) with maybe one or two small fibroids. Now got the consultant on Friday. Hopefully no biopsy Confused

Icequeen01 · 16/05/2018 20:40

That's great news @Murinae. You must be feeling very relieved. May be you won't have to have a biopsy as everything is looking normal. Fingers crossed for you on Friday.

I went for my pre op assessment yesterday ready for the biopsy on 29th. When they checked my blood pressure it was very high. I have never suffered with high blood pressure in my life! I've had my mum in and out of hospital over the last two months plus the anxiety of this hanging over me so may be it's not surprising my blood pressures high! Only problem is I've got to get three readings done by my GP before I go in to have my procedure. If by chance my blood pressure doesn't go down and the GP puts me on medication I was warned they may have to postpone the procedure😢 it worries me that there could be even more of a delay.

why is your BP an issue with a biopsy? I have had 2 biopsies. First was just done in the dr's room and took 2 minutes, 2nd was done at same time as a hysteroscopy (no GA or pain relief.)
They can do a simple biopsy just like a smear. Is this what you're having?

Icequeen01 · 16/05/2018 22:02

@Queenofthenights - my consultant tried to do at my appointment a few weeks ago but the neck of my uterus was too tight and it became too painful. They often do it using a local anaesthetic but I don't tolerate internals very well so it will be done under general anaesthetic, hence the pre-op assessment.

OP posts:
Murinae · 16/05/2018 22:48

@Icequeen01 maybe you should buy yourself a blood pressure monitor and check it at home. Then you can tell the doctor if it’s high.

Not sure if I’m relieved as not sure if it all looks normal if that means a biopsy or not??

Murinae · 16/05/2018 22:52

I take beta blockers which lower my blood pressure but no one has mentioned anything about them and I was taking them the last time I had a GA.

Mulberrybaby · 16/05/2018 22:54

Hi Icequeen, I’m in exactly the same position as you... more worrying I had breast cancer in 2009 and was on Tamoxifen for 6 years. One of the side effects of these tablets is known to cause cancer of the uterus.
My periods stopped 8 1/2 years ago and then on Saturday the flood gates opened and I’m also really concerned. I have done lots of research and my friend is a nurse and I have learnt that fibroids, polyps and thinning of the wall can cause you to bleed and apparently 8 in 10 bleeds are harmless.
I’ve also been told it’s a good place to get cancer as a hysterectomy can remove it all if it hasn’t spread.
It’s a scary place to be isn’t it? But please look up fibroids and polyps if only to help reassure yourself.
I am awaiting the results of a intervaginal US that I’ve had and am hoping the findings will be fibroids. I’m also waiting for an appointment to have a hysteroscopy, this is done with a general anaesthetic where they take a sample and if there are fibroids present they will remove them there and then.
Wishing you all the luck in the world. 😘

Icequeen01 · 16/05/2018 23:10

Thank you @Mulberrybaby and I'm so sorry to hear your news. I have also heard that 8 out of 10 cases turn out to be harmless and you must also hang onto this. When I saw my consultant he said he thought it was unlikely to be cancer but was clear he couldn't rule it out. I'm not sure if you read my earlier posts in this thread but when they did an ultrasound I had a uterus full of fibroids so they couldn't see the lining of the uterus. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that's this is the cause but until I've had the other tests I still can't help being anxious. Please make sure you go and see your GP as soon as you can.

@ Murinae - I think if your blood pressure is under control with medication it is fine. I think what they were saying to me is that if the GP puts me on medication they would postpone until my blood pressure is under control.

Sorry Mulberrybaby, just re-read your post and realise that you are already booked for tests. I hope everything goes well for you.

Thank you. 🤗
When I wrote my post above I hadn’t seen any of page 2’s posts.
Sadly the waiting room is the worst place to be as it’s inevitable that we’re going to be anxious.
Please keep us posted on your progress and I will do the same... hopefully we will be able to reassure other ladies that find themselves in the same position as us in the future.
Big hugs to you all. X

Icequeen01 · 16/05/2018 23:26

The same to you Mulberrybaby. I have been surprised by just how many women have been in the same position as us.

Just looked at my letter for tomorrow and it doesn’t mention any biopsy or taking tablets beforehand. Just consultant appointment and offers to rebook if your having a period at the moment and don’t want to be examined.

Icequeen01 · 17/05/2018 22:33

That's good news @Murinae. Hopefully you will be told tomorrow they are happy and there is no need to do a biopsy and that will be the end of it. Let us know how you get on. I will have my fingers crossed for you.

I had the first of my three blood pressure readings at the GP's this morning. Unfortunately it is still high 144/100. I've got another one on Tuesday and Thursday of next week and can only hope it will go down but as the reading was similar to those I had during my pre-op assessment I'm not feeling confident.

Just got back from the hospital. The consultant said my womb lining was thin and even and no need to do a biopsy. She said it’s so thin she wouldn’t get much tissue anyway. She said she wasn’t discharging me just yet and to come back in 3 months and before that if I start to bleed again. Everything looked normal on the scan.

Murinae · 18/05/2018 13:16

@Icequeen01 That is quite high and sounds like it needs treating. Maybe it’s good that they checked as untreated high blood pressure is not good long term.

Icequeen01 · 19/05/2018 09:06

@Murinae That's fab news, what a relief for you.
I agree about my blood pressure needing to be sorted. I think I am going to end up on medication as I'm really stressed about my mum's health and have to take her to every medical appointment which means I am currently taking time off work for both her and me. Although my boss is great and really understanding I work in a tiny, tiny special school and when one person is off it really puts pressure on the other staff, which stresses me more!

I wondered if anyone could help assure me please..I’ll try to keep this brief but the history is as follows...
2009 diagnosed with Breast Cancer, had surgery, chemo & radiotherapy and Tamifen for 6 years. I was forewarned at the time that they could cause cancer of the uterus.
Fast forward to 18 months ago, I had a US scan as had an emergency appendectomy, they picked up that the lining of my uterus was thicker than it should be 8mm when it should be 4mm. I stopped the Tamoxifen immediately and I was assured by the hospital that there was nothing to worry about.
I wanted to go back on the pills so have been checked out, had a intervaginal Ultrasound and was advised the lining had reduced to 6mm, so felt somewhat reassured that there was nothing untoward going on.five days later I started bleeding heavily with the most excruciating stomach cramps. I’ve had to go to my GP’s to get tablets to stop the excessive bleeding. Last bleed was 8 1/2 yrs ago!
Obviously I’m worry myself silly, I called the consultants secretary to see if they had got the results but she said she was t allowed to tell me anything when I asked if if they could see anything. I was hoping to hear that there were fibroids or something relatively innocent rather than cancer.
She tried to reassure me by saying if anything had been of concern they would have contacted me by now, but that they will be arranging a hysteroscopy as a matter of procedure to ensure everything is well and benign.
I’m worried silly now, does anyone have any experience they could share to help reassure me in some way?
Thank you

Icequeen01 · 20/05/2018 21:32

@Mulberrybaby I do hope someone is able to give you some reassurance. Maybe you will get more replies if you start a new post. There seems to be a lot of very knowledgeable people on the menopause board. I think a new thread will get noticed. Wishing you the very best and I will be watching your post. Thanks

Mulberrybaby · 20/05/2018 21:36

Thank you icequeen I’ll do that now. 🤗😘

Murinae · 28/05/2018 10:04

@Icequeen01 good luck for tomorrow. Let us know how you get on. I loved having my last two GA. Feel like you’ve had a good night sleep after them.

Icequeen01 · 28/05/2018 10:15

Oh bless you for remembering @Murinae but sadly it's been postponed😢 My GP asked to see me on Weds about my blood pressure and he put me on very low blood pressure meds. I then had to go back on Friday to have another reading but it was still high. I spoke to the hospital and they said they won't do it until my blood pressure is under control so I've got to wait for another appointment to come through. I so wanted to get this out of the way so I can put my mind at rest.
