Hi Ledodgy - You'll need look no further than The Nook for pubs. Fortunately for me there is a bus.....

Now then, the people I know who live/have lived in Holmfirth have told me that these are the things they don't like about it (foolish things that they are...):

Tourists wandering around at weekends
It's a bit insular
It's too far from Leeds/Manchester
No maternity service at cottage hospital (actually not much left at Hudds Royal Infirmary anymore either)
It's difficult to park - not all houses have nearby street parking.
Too many festivals, aggravate the tourists - Food, Jazz, Folk, Drink, Art.... they all have festivals in Holmfirth.
No train station

On t'other hand they have
Independent shops
Lots of buses
The Great Outdoors
Fab hairdresser
Great charity shops
Two high schools (Holmfirth High and Honley High - depends where exactly where you move too, but check which catchment you fall into, but I believe they are both pretty good Parts of Kirklees still have a First/Middle/High school system)
Very easy to get into Huddersfield. Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield all a bit further afield but doable.
A cinema/gig venue
More that it's fair share of Tapas bars.
Big Co-Op.
Tesco's superstore has been turned down!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!
V active NCT coffee/baby/t
oddler group, if that is your kind of thing.
Great Adult Ed centre, all sorts of courses.

but also

Very cold swimming pool (but I have only been once)

Give us a shout when you get there... I have only 1 dc, he's 13 months old.

V envious

Ledodgy · 26/10/2009 22:08

Thankyou BRS that's fab info there. However the lack of maternity services does not bother me at all, I was stopping at two so im fine with three thanks! I like festivals so im laughing there and i'll let dp take the children swimming.

Will deffo give you a shout when we get there I just hope our house sells fast!

Sazzie i've seen a nice house online in Honley on Thirstin Road is that a nice road?

OP posts:
BikeRunSki · 27/10/2009 08:35

I don't think there are any really bad bits of Honley. Honely village is really nice too - again, independednt shops etc.

And if you are looking at Honley too, then I forgot to mention Hinchcliffe's farm shop (uuum all day breakfast sandwhiches) and the North Light Gallery - Independent art gallerym, with all sorts of kiddie art/dance classes and really nicer yoga/pilates studio.

And a very handy BP/Somerfield that never appeaRS TO CLOSE.

Ledodgy · 27/10/2009 12:09

I can't wait!

My auntie and my Grandma live in Holmfirth, and my mum has a weekend house there

sazzlelou · 27/10/2009 17:36

Ledodgy - Thirstin Road is very nice (I live there)

May have to name change now

Ledodgy · 28/10/2009 09:59

PMSL Sazzie do you? Oh wouldnt tat be funny if we managed to getI do love the house and its very reasonably priced. I'll link you hang on...

tis this one

so what I need you to do now until we have our house on the market (waiting for the HIP) is to be really irritating to anyone you see coming to view the house to put them off!

OP posts:
sazzlelou · 28/10/2009 18:20

Oooh thats the house I want!

Its ok, you can have it, as long as I get first dibs wen you sell it.

Houses are moving pretty slowly here at the moment so i'm guessing you'll have a pretty good chance at getting it!

Ledodgy · 28/10/2009 18:29

You can have first dibs if we sell it again I promise. Dd would be made up with it since it seems she has a ready made bedroom in the roof.

Ledodgy - I may not be you same street buddy. We've jus put an offer in on a house, but dont worry, it's still in Honley

Hows your house buying going?

edam · 01/11/2009 13:48

I had a wistful thread only the other week, after visiting my Godmother and feeling the call of home. Was almost convinced that we should move back (to Denby Dale in my case) only in the cold light of day it looks a bit more complicated.

Hope you'll be very happy in Holmfirth - but I'm sure you will be anyway!

fatzak · 01/11/2009 20:41

Ah here's your thread Ledodgy

Now, as you know I am t'other side of Huddersfield (just down the road from you Bikerunski by the way!) but have good pals who live in Holmfirth.

I think that
I would rather live within walking distance of Holmfirth rather than Honley but that's just a pref. Holmfirth High has excellent results - Honley is good too but not quite as good as Honley. If you moved more our way or even into the Thurstonland area, you'd be in the Shelley College catchment which still has the first school/middle school/high school system although for how long I don't know but that's another story as I work in the system!!

I've got friends who live in Wooldale and Scholes and Hepworth and they all love their areas. My friend who lives in Wooldale sends her DS to the school in Holmfirth called Nab and is very happy there too. A couple of my other friends use the nursery just by Holmfirth High (again don't know the name!) and again are both really pleased with it.

Just some ramblings for now

Wilkiepedia · 19/11/2009 20:30

Hello I live in Linthwaite! I love Holmfirth although Linthwaite is lovely too!!!

I only moved to Huddersfield 18 months ago and what a whirlwind it has been! My husband has set up his business, we had another baby boy, I got a new job and have now joined a company that does 2D Hand and Foot casts and fingerprint jewellery as their Northern studio www.preciousimpression.co.uk

Want to move to Holmfirth in the future though for secondary school for the boys as it's supposed to be amazing!

ledodgy · 29/11/2009 10:56

Hello I didnt realise others had replied to this thread since I last checked! Our house still isnt up! We had to use our HIP money to fix broken central heating. We are putting it up in anuary now. I'm not too worried though as friend has had hers up for a few weeks and only had one viewing I think it being this close to Christmas, January is probably a better option! What is New Mill like because ive seen a beautiful house online but don't know the area?

Edam I like Denby Dale as well I know it quite well as sil and bil used to live there. Unfortunately it's a little bit too far out for dps commute.

Hello Wiki wow your jewellery is lovely!

Hello Fatzak I've heard Holmfirth High is good my sil went there and she did ok.
Sazzle was your offer accepted?

OP posts:
ledodgy · 29/11/2009 10:58

Also did anyone notice how quickly Sazzle put in an offer on another house when she thought there was a chance I may be living on her road?

OP posts:
fatzak · 04/12/2009 19:52

New Mill fine Ledodgy - not much too it to be honest but only a couple of miles into Holmfirth. There's a stretch of it that goes up towards Shepley which is getting further away, but the main crossroads of New Mill is very good for roads/buses in and out of Huddersfield/Holmfirth.

Hope you mangage to get on the market in Jan

Nicola10 · 05/01/2010 16:15

Any luck on your house move Ledodgy? I'm in Upper Cumberworth, about 4 miles from Holmfirth and one mile from centre of Denby Dale.

sazzlelou · 23/01/2010 21:57

Led0dgy - only just seen your question. No someone put in a much higher offer so still on the same road :D

How's everything going?

sarahandlily · 23/08/2010 16:50

Hi! I'm ANOTHER peron hoping to be coming to Holmfirth soon! Hubby is just starting work in Sheffield and sister lives in Cottingley so Holmfirth is just in between- so perfect! we have one 9 month old daughter and would love to meet people once we are up there as will be friendless:( so far am jobless and homeless too-still waiting to sell place here in Reading before looking up there. so we MAY be with you in the near future, fingers crossed :) Have no idea though where we should be looking at buying a place and being so far away at the mo its pretty tricky!

Nicola10 · 13/09/2010 14:12

Hi Sarah, would love to meet up when you are in the area. I've also got friends who moved into the Holmfirth area from Reading a couple of years ago!
