MN London Christmas Booze-up. Do we want dance/music or do we want to see and talk to the people there?

Plead discusse. All Bar One in Soho has been suggested. It looks good in terms of location and price, and we can talk to each other (something that was complained about that we couldn't do last time). But, do we need music and dancing? I can do without it, but I think others might want it.

Please discuss....

I agree with the eat leisurely, chat and dance after dinner format (ie like 2 years ago). personally I could forego the dancing but I like to see the young ones having fun

Bubble99 · 16/07/2007 23:14

How does the function-room at a central London (easy for everyone to get to and rooms could be available on-site) hotel sound? with a DJ and some food?

If everyone who signs up now pays a tenner to a mnet paypal account, there should (hopefully) be enough to cover the costs in advance. It would be non-returnable so that anyone who drops-out won't feel that they have let anyone down - and the attendees won't be left with a huge bill?

Bubble99 · 16/07/2007 23:17

Starry. The pizza idea is good. But we'd then need to go on somewhere and that will probably mean a noisy bar/club. Not good for meeting and talking, which is what most people want to do?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/07/2007 23:28

Bubbs - sounds great.

I dont really care about the quality of food as such (we ate at pizza express last year after all ), as long as we get fed.

I would quite happily pay the whole lot up front. Saves worrying about bringing anything more than beer tokens and taxi fares on the night.

As I said - strand palace had a function room, reasonable set meals incl wine. A bar for further drinks and dancefloor area with opportunity to hire dj too.

If you can find a similar place that'd be fab.

Tortington · 16/07/2007 23:29

sounds great.

CountessDracula · 16/07/2007 23:30

function room

just the name makes me depressed

How about upstairs in a pub? Not as awful as a hotel mebbe?

ComeOVeneer · 16/07/2007 23:32

No it sounds good. If you are happy to take the helm go for it QV, and thankyou.

Bubble99 · 16/07/2007 23:57

VVVQV. I'll check out The Selfridge place and you get prices etc for The Strand?

CD. It's a room with people, drink and music.

Sorry if it sounds a bit Travelodge to you. I'd go to a shack, TBH, if it meant I could meet and talk to people I'd like to talk to.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/07/2007 00:10

Indeed Bubble.

The advantage of hotel function room, means you have bedrooms just upstairs, rather than a walk/taxi ride away.

FlameDelacour · 17/07/2007 07:52

I like the paypal idea.

eleusis · 17/07/2007 08:07

I'm with CD on this. Also...

What about people who are strapped for cash and want to come only for a couple drinks? Will they have to have the meal?

Sorry, but I think people do care what they eat. Some people will want poncy food (like the vampire), others will want cheap, and others will want something else.

If we are in central London surely people can find their way to hotels and not require that the room is upstairs in the same building.

Well, I suppose we have plenty of time. So VVQV if you want to look into by all means feel free to let us know what you find out. But, remember that cost of the night will be a factor to many. Some people will want dinner for a tenner.

I agree that a room in a pub would probably work better than a hotel. for one thing a hotel will probably charge a fortune for food and would want us to be all precise about numbers. a pub would probably be more flexible - on both food and numbers this site lets you search pub function rooms

hatwoman · 17/07/2007 08:28

here are the results for WC

IntergalacticWalrus · 17/07/2007 11:34

I quite like the ideaof a function room type affair.

The splinter group thing, well, it's a bit cliquey isn't it?

I don;t know any mner from London, so I'd probably justy end up walking round like a nobbo all night getting lost

hatwoman · 17/07/2007 11:57

with a name like yours I'll talk to you. what does an intergalactic walrus look like? I have always wondered

IntergalacticWalrus · 17/07/2007 12:15

this is a pretty gpood likeness, hat

IntergalacticWalrus · 17/07/2007 12:21

Anyway, can't we have the meet up here in Bath? We have trains, buses, roads, hotels, running water and everything you know.

eleusis · 17/07/2007 12:34

I love BAth. If you arrange a meet up in warm weather, I'm there. I might even take a day off and bring the nanny and kids and not tell DH.

wqsn't there a big MN meet up in Bath a few years ago? I think that was before my time on here, when I had a life.

Anyway, I might organise one in the summer, If I can be arsed

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/07/2007 13:26

If people just want to come along for a few drinks they can - there is a paying bar at most places - so no problem.

The function rooms in pubs and bars need to be private ones, so we can have a say over the level of noise from the music.

yeahinaminute · 17/07/2007 13:57

Ummm - Walrus - It is the summer - apparantly

Anyway you'll be with me and we'll be staying at the club - we could fashion wrist straps so you don't get lost !!

newlifenewname · 17/07/2007 14:01

I like weddings - you talk and eat in a serene atmosphere then youi get sozzled and dance a lot.

Perfect.

So, I vote we gatecrash some random xmas wedding.

PS - can I come? I need someone to hold my hand though

eleusis · 17/07/2007 15:02

Yeah Walrus, this is summer -- couldn't you tell?

StarryStarryNight · 17/07/2007 19:08

IntergalacticWalrus, though I doubt you will be lonely with such a memorable name, I too worry that while everybody is eating dinner in their splinter group, there is poor old Starry all alone, freezing her butt off on a bench in Covent Garden, well fed pigeons for company, covered in snow, looking at her watch hopeing somebody will come for drinks soon, while in fact everybody is enjoyin their meals so much they stay put. Sob.

ComeOVeneer · 17/07/2007 19:13

Starry aren't you in the W London area? Get yourself along to a couple of our meet-ups before the xmas do then you will know a few souls.
