HELP!! I am in the process of moving to Streatham from West London and need recommendations for things to do once we move at the beginning of July. We have been going to baby massage which we enjoyed but I could also do with meeting some other mums as having now had four months of work I am starting to lose my mind a little.

So any recommendations of things to do in Balham, Brixton, Dulwich, Tooting or Streatham would be gratefully received.

Sorry I forgot to say ds is three months old if that helps with any recommendations.

Not sure about the area you live in - but we go out a bit further west every now and then. Keep an eye on the boards - you'll be welcome along whenever the next one happens.

chublina

there is a one o'clock club in brockwell park, as well as the lido (mum and baby yoga held there, along with whippersnappers (similar to gymboree i think)) a paddling pool, playground, cafe, duck ponds etc. there are various facilities at brixton rec, including a creche (if you want to go and do something) and a soft play area (for when your ds is older - i think the youngest age is 2).

you could also try dulwich park, tooting bec, streatham common or clapham common for activities.

i would also join the local nct (lambeth and southwark branch) they will have post-natal tea group in your area to join and also run drop in baby groups. nct is usually a good place to meet other mums. many of the activities are in dulwich.

the nct newsletter is also a really good place to find out about other m&b activities such as massage or gymboree (or equivalent).

both brixton ritzy and clapham picture house have special m&b screenings (i think weekly)

you could also check out baby swimming - i know they do it at clapham manor rec centre, but i'm sure also at brixton.

and as willow says, look out for mumsnetter meet ups in your area.

good luck.

Thanks very much for the suggestions..it looks like we'll never be in the new flat.

Used to live in Tooting with dd up to 1 year old. There is a very good one o'clock center in earlsfield (siward road - you'll have to catch a bus from streatham, probably the G1) especially for little ones with a sensory room etc. Also the Tooting leisure center (Garrat Lane) has a baby gym time (probably for a bit later) and mother and baby swimming classes).
I found most of the cafes and restaurant baby friendly at lunch time, and usually full of prams!! Also, in Tooting Bec Common, there is an open air cafe which is packed with mums every day in the summer.
Apart from that, I found the best way to meet mums is through postnatal courses (ask your GP soon - I think they only accept up to 4 months old babies) and I also did a baby massage course (nhs one) which again was great for meeting other mums. You should ask your health visitor for anything like that available in Streatham, or I could give you the phone number for Tooting and you could phone yourself.

Oh, most importantly, check on the website \linknetmums.com{} (hope this works) and go to wandsworth. It's the most updated borough and has tonns of thing that are around and could be close to you.

Good luck!!!

hello there, will post in next week or so with info/ideas, am in tooting myself and can give you ideas...but bit tired tonight to do anything apart from surf threads and one liners! my 2nd baby due in 3 weeks, if you would like to meet up a few weeks after that, we can get together...

lydialemon · 14/06/2004 21:50

Hey Chublina, whereabouts in Streatham are you coming to? I live near the Common, but I have to be honest and say I do very little in Streatham itself. Dulwich Park is great, as is Tooting Common. Streaham Common is a bit boring to walk around TBH, but there is a place at the top called the Rookery, which is a lovely flower garden and secluded picnic area. I often pack up some sandwiches and wander over for lunch, not many people seem to know it exists.

I'm glad you started this thread as I now know more about the facilities in this area than I ever have before. I don't actually have any friends with kids who live here, so I tend to go out towards Croydon/Addiscombe.

Incidently, I have two DSs (6 and 4) and a 7mth DD.

BeckyK · 15/06/2004 18:41

We'll be living just off Valley Road so not far from the common..if the weather carries on like this maybe we could meet up for a picnic in the Rookery one day?

Changed name from Chublina after v negative feedback from dh, despite the fact that this is what he calls me!

serenequeen · 15/06/2004 18:42

the git!

BeckyK · 15/06/2004 18:44

Madgirl would be great to meet up after you have had baby 2, drop me a line through contact another talker when you are able to meet and we can arrange something.

BeckyK · 15/06/2004 18:45

To be fair to him he said it was no longer appropriate now the baby bum and belly have shrunk a little, but he still called me it in the first place so he's not entirely forgiven

lydialemon · 15/06/2004 19:32

Well, we will be practically neighbours as I live off Valley Road myself, I'm down the Common end. Let me know when you are around and we'll make a date of it!

Any others MNers in the area would of course be very welcome!
