Glasgow West End

I'm moving to Glasgow in three weeks and don't know anyone yet. I'm trying to find things to do, like Baby massage/Yoga ... or simply meet other mums for coffee. My ds is 4 months old and I met loads of woman here in London through the Antenatal activities I did. Now I hope that it will be as easy to meet people "postnatal"
Are there any Glaswegian mums on Mumsnet who could help?

I live in the southside, but my kids are at school!

I think Aimsmum lives in the west end, she may be of more use than me!

good luck with moving!

PP, there is a bumps north of the border thread in pregnancy, we are all due between now and June I think?

Most of us are in Glasgow, I'm uddingston, few closer to the city centre, we have had a couple of meet ups and a xmas night out, although none of us have babies yet I'm sure you will fit in just fine!! Are you back at work yet?

Loulee · 18/01/2007 20:07

Hi PP, there are lots of things going on in the west end 1st one that comes to mind - balance.co.uk do a baby massage / post natal class
and
hillhead library used to do a baby massage thingy too.
oh and partick library do something called 'bounce and rhyme' - think it's wed mornings. but maybe ds a bit young yet....

theres a few mothers and toddlers groups in w/e that are meant to be good. - not sure where they are exactly but could find out for you - or someone else might know....

the playrooms in maryhill is my favourite though - rooms of different toys, soft play area, you can make tea / their lunch and everyone dead friendly - for age 0 to 5. and open 10-4 weekdays. you become a member #10 and pay #1 for each visit.

oops will post remainder later, trying to feed baby and typing one handed!

Loulee · 18/01/2007 20:19

Hello again, sorry about that! much easier now i have 2 hands.
As i was saying the playrooms is great - and a good place to meet lots of people. It's not really hard to get to, but needs a bit of explaining so let me know if youre interested.
Theres also a playcentre at kelbourne st. www.playcentre.org.uk/ which is really friendly - havent been for a long time though.
oh and baby cinema 9or rather watch with baby) at grovesnor cinema on thursday mornings

and i just found this www.glasgowwestend.co.uk/whatson/jauntweans.html pat's west end weans - I think it mentions some of the above as well as details of the toddler groups at novar drive.

Phew! i didn't know i was such a minefield of information!! Hope it's of some use to you.

BTW I have 2 dd's - dd1 is 3.5, dd2 is 18 months. and live in w/end.
When are you moving up?

kikidee · 18/01/2007 20:47

Hi Pixiepolar, I'm in the Southside so I don't know much about activities in the West End but I know this place is nice . The website doesn't have much information but as well as being a nice coffe shop, I think they also organise activities. Gymboree run classes for babies and older children which are good but they are quite expensive. That's on Crow Road and there is a general Gymboree website but you have to phone Crow Road for class timetables. DS and I go to a Gymnastics class at Bellahouston Leisure Centre in the South Side but I would have thought that Scotstoun Leisure Centre would run similar classes. They start from 18 months I think and are similar to Gymboree but much cheaper.

Not particularly baby specific, but you must try Tinderbox for coffee on Byres Road and Kember & Jones also Byres Road for fantastic cakes.

giggly · 19/01/2007 22:09

Hi I am in the west end to, most of the libraries have bounce and rhyme all on different days, I started in Whiteinch which is on Thursdays at 1.30 with dd when she was 12 weeks. ditto the playrooms excellant on a rainy day. Scotstoun leisure centre have ducklings classes on Monday and Friday mornings for 4 months to 2 years at 10 am, it is pretty busy on the Fridays but lots of fun. There are free baby massage in most health centres but are usally referrals from health visitor, when you register with a GP they will let you know. My dd is now 17 months, would be happy to meet for coffee.

lillee · 21/01/2008 21:10

Hi Pixiepolar. Hope all is going well with the move. I take my DS to the Bump and Rhyme at Partick Library and its quite a casual format starts at 10.30 Wed mornings and is free - not too young some dc are 3mths old. Just good place to meet other mums and everyone is friendly bet you speak to a few before you leave.

Also Jo Jingles does classes for same age as yours but also Wed morning their number is 0141 587 7942 its a bit more formal and longer class but includes instruments and stuff ds loves it. Costs £4 per week but you have to call to see if any spaces.

Am in the West End and would also be happy to meet for a coffee. keep us posted with the move anyway!

Hello,
I just found this page. I am living at the west end as well and have a three week old son. I am orignally from Germany and we moved to Glasgow 1 year ago.
I do not really know anybody else with a baby. It would be great though to meet up with some other mums and babys, go for a coffe etc.
Anybody interested or ideas where to meet other mums, would be really nice.
thanks

WerefromCanada · 27/05/2008 11:00

Hello Ladies,

I live in the westend as well, I'm here with my husband and dd who is 3. We are here from Canada for 6 months and I am desperatly looking for activites for my dd to do. I was hoping for a preschool in this area. Anyone know of any?
Also, I'm already bored of trying to have girl chat with my hubby...lol. I love coffee and would love to meet up.

prettybird · 27/05/2008 11:25

Ths is porbably the thread you shold look at - they seem to organise quite a few meet-up sin the Glasgow area, but as they tend to meet up during the week (and I work f/t) I have never been.

There are also periodic meet-ups in Glasgow/Edinbrgh/Stirling at the weekends, some with kids, some wothout, depending on whether we can get an impetus going.

midnightexpress · 27/05/2008 11:32

Hi there - have a look at the other thread that prettybird has linked to - we're (rather uselessly) trying to organise a meet-up at the moment. We're a friendly bunch, but the thread is quite quiet a the moment - come on over and liven things up a bit .

Also, have a look at this website:

www.glasgowbaby.com, which might give you some ideas of things to do.
