I know, it's Belgium we're supposed to be talking about, not Luxembourg!

Ronny · 17/05/2004 22:14

I'm in Holland, I know it's not Belgium, but it's not that far.

Tanzie · 19/05/2004 16:21

I have to confess - ErpsKwerps is me! I was playing around trying to change my name and thought I'd changed it back!

Arwenevenstar (what a mouthful!) I am in the British Ghetto!

Grommit · 19/05/2004 16:32

Don't know what has happened to Sprout - thought she was in Belgium..?

fairyprincess · 23/05/2004 23:04

Cam · 24/05/2004 12:21

Does anyone in Holland know my (Dutch) friend Wendy who moved from Amsterdam to Oude Wetering 2 years ago?

Sophiedophie · 24/05/2004 19:40

I'm fairly new to mumsnet and live in Brussels. Is there anyone else that lives there?

Sophiedophie · 24/05/2004 19:42

I'm fairly new to mumsnet and live in Brussels. Does anyone else live here?

Tinker · 24/05/2004 19:47

What do you all do out there? Have tried (and failed) to get a job at in the EU.

Ronny · 25/05/2004 21:12

I'm fairly new to Mumsnet, and live near Rotterdam, is there anyone else around here?. It would be lovely to just talk in English. I'm really a food technologist but work in a microbiology lab. I've been here since 1990 and have worked most of the time. I was lucky getting my first job here and after we moved west at least I had some experience working for a Dutch company.

arwenevenstar · 26/05/2004 06:37

Hey Sophiedophie, I am just out of Brussels down the N5 towards Waterloo.

I am a stay at home mum waiting on a third arrival in November.

How long has everyone been in their respective Benelux areas??

Sophiedophie · 31/05/2004 17:40

I've been in Brussels for nearly three years and really love it. Lots of brits and loads to do. Really good food and wine too! I have two children who have settled in really well here. Will be very sad to leave.

Tanzie · 31/05/2004 21:49

Should we have a Benelux meet up then?! Tinker - I think jobs at the EU are a matter of who you know, not what you know (she said very sourly!)

Try one of the other international organisations here - there are quite a few.

fairyprincess · 31/05/2004 22:38

A Big No here Tanzie - EU jobs do NOT depend on who you know. There is a rigorous competition selection process which is fully transparent.

Tinker - Check out the europa website for details.

Tinker · 01/06/2004 08:50

Hi Tanzie and fairyprincess. Yep, have applied through the open competitions and went to London for the initial tests about 2 or 3 years ago now. Pretty rigourous and demanding I thought - failed one of the 4 papers so that was the end of that. A little relieved in a way since I'd said I could speak Italian as well as French and found out I might be interviewed in Italian! So, yes, I do think they're transparent. Maybe once you get in it's who you know but...

fairyprincess · 01/06/2004 09:28

Hi Tinker - just think of all the new languages now you could choose!! Even when you're in it's never who you know that gets the job - there's a selection committee that has members drawn from the workforce to ensure fairness plus there are trade unions. Also there is an appeals process as well. Everything is in the open - even more than a business.

All the best

Ronny · 05/06/2004 05:28

Tanzie, I'd come to a Benelux meet-up

Tanzie · 06/06/2004 11:45

FP and Tinker - sorry, did not mean to sound grumpy, I am sure the selection process is fair (have never applied myself - too thick!), but I DO know a couple of people who really have got in through the back door. So I think it can happen sometimes, and probably does in any organisation.

Where would we have a Benelux meet up then?
