Any mumsnetters in the Aberystwyth area?

I'm new to the mumsnetter meet-ups. Is there a group established in the Aberystwyth area?

I take it that's a "no", then!

Are there any mumsnetters who live in the Aber area? If so, what do you think are the pros and cons of living here? I'd be interested in comparing notes on places to go, things to do, etc.

Codswallop - thank you for your support

Diolch, Bron, for your message. I've read the thread on the South Wales meet-up. As you say, it's too far for me, but perhaps an Aber one will develop. We'll see. Hwyl!

I'm near Aber, but not yet a mum - still on the ttc thread! Might be able to compare notes/pros and cons though, albeit from a not-yet-a-mum's perspective. DH and I moved here from Kent four years ago so we were once new kids too! Welcome, anyway

thenewkidintown · 05/05/2004 21:07

Schmozer - thanks for your message. I'm new to Mumsnet, but I've actually lived in Aber for about 6 years now, not including my college years. Still haven't bothered to learn the names of the streets in town, though! My children are nearing secondary school age. I could be the wise old hand of the (as yet unformed) Aber group!

Sorry, misunderstood which town you were the new kid in! You'll know a lot more about Aber than me if you've been here six years, so you can be the old hand in that sense as well as the 'mum' sense!

tiamaria · 07/05/2004 12:46

Schmozer - thanks for your message. I've changed my nickname to tiamaria as the other one was too long and confusing. It'll be interesting to see if we get others to join us. Shall we set a deadline for our first meet ie a few months/six months or whatever and then go ahead, regardless of how many of us there are? When is your baby due?

tiamaria · 07/05/2004 12:50

Schmozer - whoops! Just realised that I don't know what ttc means?!! Why isn't there an emoticon for mild panic?!!

WSM · 07/05/2004 12:54

TTC - Trying to conceive

tiamaria · 07/05/2004 13:12

WSM - Thank you.
Schmozer - I've sent you an e-mail via contact another talker. If you'd like to, I'd like to meet up.

tiamaria · 18/06/2004 00:58

Update - The Aber MN first meet-up has taken place! Schmozer and I met in town last Monday and had a nice chat over lunch. We look forward to more joining this thread and having another meet-up in due course.

moominmama86 · 18/06/2004 01:09

Tia - have you always lived in Aber? Hope you don't mind me asking but I was a student there (graduated 95) and loved it soooo much! Have only been back once sadly but still miss it loads, especially in the summer.

Aaaah, memories

tiamaria · 20/06/2004 14:23

moominmama86 - Hi! I came to Aber to college and left in 1989. Then, 7 years ago, I found myself back here with work. I'm glad you've got happy memories of Aber. Which bits of it did you like best? It has changed a lot recently, I think.

bettys · 20/06/2004 15:20

Well I can beat you both as I graduated from Aber in 1981! Absolutely loved it there (so much I stayed for TT & ended up working on the Pier for a while) Am thinking of dragging dp & ds up there this summer to kick the bar.

How has it changed? Is Alex still there? Will I get depressed if I go back?

tiamaria · 20/06/2004 16:05

bettys - Hi! Thanks for your message. Sorry, I don't know what TT is, or who Alex is! Glad you enjoyed your stay in Aber. If you came back on holiday I'm sure you'd enjoy taking a look at your old haunts again. Did we have the insane one way system when you were here? We've now got a Safeway and McDonalds and stuff out of town near the Blaendolau playing fields. I wonder if there's a Tourist Information Centre website on Aber? If there is, that might be of interest!

bettys · 20/06/2004 16:13

TT = teacher training
Alex = Alexandra Hall, the students hall at the end of the prom under Consti. Someone told me it was derelict now. I lived there in my first year when there were lots of student's halls on the front ( and no one-way system). Aber was very basic in my day, no McDonalds, one crappy little supermarket, but huge amounts of fun. I looked on the Aber sites for info, may end up staying in Aberaeron at the Harboumaster's Hotel.

moominmama86 · 21/06/2004 00:45

I think Alex Hall burnt down a couple of years ago, Bettys. Could be wrong but I'm pretty sure I remember something about it.

It was definitely still pretty basic when I was there - no MacDonalds - although Y Graig was great for lead-weight veggie pizzas! When I went back to visit in 2000 it had changed a lot - much more 'mainstream', banks turned into pubs etc., lots of blonde wood and shiny chrome. I thought it was a bit of a shame, tbh - I always liked the fact that Aber was a bit spit-and-sawdust and knit-your-own-yoghurt! Still, Rummers was the same and Ynyslas beach hadn't changed a bit!

tiamaria · 21/06/2004 13:10

Right! I came to college here, not Uni, and so I didn't understand! TBH, I go into town only when needs must. Ynyslas beach is more my kind of place! Any more Aber fans out there?

Bettys - Aberaeron is still a lovely place. There's a National Trust place open nearby now. NT places usually have lovely tearooms. This one..........doesn't! Yeugh!
