I think I would need to do something before I went for the course. Will have a look at Hull College, ds2 will be full time around christmas time so it's something to look into.

Jobot · 09/08/2006 21:46

I have heard good things about the access course at hull college too heavenis

Exactly Jo! At one point me and my v.experience E grade mentor had to ask a G grade district nurse about a learning outcome and she didn't know.
2nd year has modules that are actually about nursing so hopefully I will LEARN revelant stuff then! Have done loads on placements tho but others have not been so lucky.

heavenis we got a leaflet through the front door a while ago, I think they run the course in the evening as well and i think they help you with uni application etc.

Jobot · 09/08/2006 21:52

Are you on summer break now smurfgirl? or have you still got coursework? how would your dh feel about you studying again heavenis?

OP posts:
smurfgirl · 09/08/2006 21:54

Summer break, ahhhhh. I have a 3000 word essay to write on how old people are vulnerable and what social/health services are in place to help them etc but not too bad at all! I want to get it done by next week because I am off to Greece next Thursday and would like to have everything done by then.

heavenis · 09/08/2006 21:55

He wouldn't have any problem with that,as long as I'm happy he's happy and I have good PIL to help with the children. (never thought I'd say that, but thats a different thread)Dh is very supportive.

Jobot · 09/08/2006 21:55

Not too bad then, where abouts in greece are you going you lucky thing

OP posts:
Jobot · 09/08/2006 21:58

What problems are you having Jobot ?
The only thing that holds me back is not being able to go to everything at school for my boys. I think it's guilt about doing something for me a bridge every mother has to cross I think.

Jobot · 09/08/2006 22:02

Hope you have a fab time smurfgirl, even if the essay isnt finished dont worry about socially excluded old people! Same goes for you if you want any help/ advice am happy to help

the way the course works heavenis is that its the law that we have to do a certain amount of hours of both theory and practise over the 3 years and everyear they timetable us for 37.5 hours too much theory/practice. So basically if you have the odd day off sick you can still qualify. At the risk of being a bad student I have taken a day off 'sick' for something else because I knew I had these extra hours in kwim?
Many wards allow you to choose your own off-duty as well so if you need a day off they are pretty good (don;t know about your ward jobot?). This summer semester I was in uni for about 3 hours A WEEK so loads of free time.

We also got 9 weeks timetabled holiday and about 6 weeks study leave on top of that x

Jobot · 09/08/2006 22:13

i let my students pick their own off duty as long as they spend a good amount of time with their mentor otherwise its difficult to assess them.

I knew someone who had that they had to have crutches. (I think thats what they had) Both my boys caused me problems ds1 pre eclampsia and HELLP (born 8wks prem) ds2 gestantial diabetes.(born at 38wks but had a bad time with his blood sugar)

Jobot · 09/08/2006 22:20

sounds like you had it rough with your boys, am sure your boys would want you to do something that made you happy, most staff on my ward still manage to go to their kids stuff you can request certain shifts and days off etc.

OP posts:
heavenis · 09/08/2006 22:25

I think I maybe using the boys as an excuse, and really it's having the confidence to go back into the work place.

Jobot · 09/08/2006 22:30

Can see it must be hard after a long break, maybe a part time course first would help? get you back into the swing of things. How big a gap between your two boys, there will be 16 months for my two and everyone keeps going on about how on eath will i cope with two little ones I must be mad etc

OP posts:
heavenis · 09/08/2006 22:39

I think you'll be fine. I would have liked mine closer in age there is 3.5 yrs difference.
Do you plan to have anymore after this one ?

Jobot · 09/08/2006 22:42
