I was 1990-1994 (languages single honours, so a year off for good behaviour in the middle).

No work in the Union for me, or anywhere else. I know this is perceived as some sort of luxury nowadays but we had about 12 hours of lectures and spent most of the rest of the time watching videos and downing pints in the Union.

What about you? I must say, would love to go and see the Union now, am having flashbacks to the Harvey Milk bar.

Ooh, get you, that's virtually like being university royalty I hope he has now moved on to a job with less sticky floors and fewer plastic pint 'glasses'.

But there are pubs in Leeds without sticky floors and plastic pint glasses I hope? Have been a bit pinned down since my return by ds, my main complaint about Leeds pubs at the moment is the amount of smoking. Ever since I was pregnant I have been vehemently anti-smoking just because of the smell, and Leeds is horrific just now, wondering what the new anti-smoking laws will be bringing ...

Btw, I like that new pub near the campus called "The Library", so you can pretend you've spent 'all day in the library' to your parents ... (will now turn out The Library has been there for 11 years).

I'm a Leeds lass too - same village as Yorkiegirl! Will keep an eye on thread as to a meet up as no transport so depends where it is.

I am going to Dewsbury for my birth as had bad experience at LGI.

helsi, slight digression but I am generally a bit concerned about this northern system of maternity care you have up here (sweeping generalisation based on you and my friend in Harrogate). Is your theory that a smaller hospital is likely to provide better, more individual care? (I would certainly back that theory from my experience in Suffolk).

FWIW, I work in central Leeds, just by the station, so we Junies tend to meet in places like La Tasca (I swear they must hate me for constantly bringing in swarms of children at lunchtime) although I prefer the Slug but the no-smoking room is tiny.

helsi · 26/02/2006 22:47

No - I chose dewsbury as didn't want to go back to Leeds due to past experience and don't like St James at all so Dewsbury was only other option. many friends have been there and didn't have any problems so I thought I would give it a try. More parking too as dh missed one scan and could never get parked at Leeds

spiker · 26/02/2006 23:16

Tribpot/Yorkiegirl - I was 1990-94, in Bagby Fields for the first year. I got quite involved at the union towards the end (YG - have probably met your DH!).

Is the general consensus that LGI is Not Good then? No hospital is 100% perfect, so 1 or 2 negative stories wouldn't over concern me, but if they're mostly bad then I will definitely try to get in elsewhere.

Incidentally when I had DS1 I wasn't given a choice - it was Mayday (Croydon) or a home birth, that was it. So the whole concept of choosing which hospital to grace feels pretty luxurious to me!

Spiker, were you a languages student, or another type of four year course?

I don't much like Jimmy's, and parking there is really bad just now as well. Haven't been to the LGI in years.

We had no choice of birthing centre where I was before, still don't much fancy the choices here though!

spiker · 27/02/2006 17:16

Tribpot - I did Classics, a 3 yr course. Er, my 4th year I was a sabbatical union officer...

bettythebuilder · 27/02/2006 18:07

Hello, I'm just over the border in North Yorkshire, so will keep an eye out for a meet up.
I had Dd in Harrogate hospital and it was fab...only complaint was no 12 week scan, but the care was excellent, hospital is lovely (looked like a private hosp compared to others I've been in) and for a couple of days I had a 6 bed ward all to myself.

Yorkiegirl · 27/02/2006 18:14

which officer were you spiker?

Tatties · 28/02/2006 12:25

Spiker - thought I would just add another vote for LGI - midwives on delivery suite and the ward were lovely. From what I've heard it is better than Jimmy's.

MamaG · 28/02/2006 12:34

I had DD at St James's (6 1/2 years ago!) and the care was excellent - had DS 2 years ago at LGI and that was ok - not as good as Jimmys though IMO.

I was in for a week at Jimmys as baby had jaundice and they couldn't have done more for me - they were lovely throughout the labour and delivery too (was induced).

At LGI, I was induced and felt that I was "left to it" a lot of the time, also was rushed off home at 12noon after having given birth at 6.30 the night before. The staff just seemed rushed all the time. I was anxious about feeding as it took a good few days for me to get my first baby to latch on without the assistance of a nurse, and I told them that when I had DS - all I got was "well, try and let us know if you struggle" - I thought they should have been a bit more supportive.

Don't know if they are different with first time Mums or not?

Gosh, I sound like a right whiney old bag who experts to have her hand held at every minute - I'm not, honestly!

rainbow123 · 28/02/2006 13:49

You get the choice of a water birth at LGI... i was booked into Jimmies but ended up giving birth at Walsgrave, Coventry (long story...).

spiker · 03/03/2006 22:13

Shall we make a date then? I was hoping redstarfalling would look in and suggest a date, seeing as it is her thread after all! I can do something after 12th March. It would be really nice to meet some of you before DS2 arrives and I lose my laptop and sanity under a pile of nappies and sleepless nights...

EDD is 23 March btw.

(YG - Education).

Tatties · 03/03/2006 22:17

Awww Spiker, that was my edd this time last year! Ds was bloomin' 2 weeks late though!

spiker · 03/03/2006 22:21

2 weeks late eh? Blimey...it sort of sounds appealing as I have so much to do, but on the other hand, I can't really walk or bend now! Was it hell?

Yorkiegirl · 03/03/2006 22:22

I am around in the afternoon. Anyone got a location suggestion? Or are we talking an evening meet here?

4blue1pink · 03/03/2006 22:40

I had four of mine in LGI even though my local hosp is Airedale.

I love the midwives but was horrified at hygiene this time...so much so i was tempted to photograph some of what i was.

Midwives back home asked me how it was and why i chose it - they said yes its fabulous but maybe not so clean....I was horrified that it is well known that standards are so bad but no one does anything,

Fabulous midwives though!
