any northern mummies living down south?

Hi I'd love to hear, possibly meet up, with any northern mummies who have moved down here. My two sons are 2yrs and 6 months I am feeling particulary home sick, and would love someone to talk to. (I know that sounds desperate, its not that bad, but you know what I mean hopefully.)
Cheers for reading, Becca.x

tuppenceworth · 20/12/2005 22:23

How far 'down south'?

Anywhere near Nottingham or are we talking further down?

Becca81 · 20/12/2005 22:24

Hi FTSL I'm in Essex, anywhere near you?
BTW it wasn't anything against the southern mummies, I hope I didn't offend!! That was the last thing I wanted to do.
I just feel like I'm the only northerner down here sometimes!!
Thanks for your reply. x

where's north and where's south

I'm from manchester and live in SE London if that helps?

followthestarlover · 20/12/2005 22:29

i am in sussex! so not that close unfortunately, no offence taken at all!

Becca81 · 20/12/2005 22:30

Oh crikey... SE london is quite far.. bout 25 mins away from where I am. (accroding to DH.. I know nothing of where I am)
Erm, well my north is Yorkshire, as I was born and raised there, and my south is here in Essex with the miserable MIL who never offers any help.

If you're ever round north Nottingham, ie Mansfield, give us a bell and we can meet up for an Irish coffee (or just the Irish bit if you prefer!)

northerner · 20/12/2005 22:31

Hi Becca! I'm not a southern Mum, I'm in North Yorkshire. Where you from?

Becca81 · 20/12/2005 22:34

Hi Northener, Ah, my opposite! I'm from Huddersfield lived there all my life up until leaving home at 19. Where are you in North Yorks?

Thanks tuppenceworth, that's a lovely offer!

FTSL Crikey, Sussex is very south! Maybe I'm not that far down as I thought.

followthestarlover · 20/12/2005 22:36

yep i am about 25 mins from the coast. most things are "north" to me! lol

northerner · 20/12/2005 22:36

I'm in Harrogate.Bet your not missing our colder weather

Becca81 · 20/12/2005 22:39

Oh you know what.. I get so many people saying (when they hear my accent) "is it warmer down here for you? I've heard its cold up north" (they are particulary old people who only go to Tesco on a Saturday morning and pension collecting on a Wednesday though.)
I did notice it was colder when I last came up to see my family back in November... I must be going soft!

tuppenceworth · 20/12/2005 23:29

Becca81 - I lived in north Durham for three years - my god it's cold up there! The north wind really takes your breath away! It's a good cure for a hangover!

hativity · 20/12/2005 23:40

I'm from Sheffield and in SW London. Don't have much time for meet-ups but happy to virtually commiserate about being in exile. Only problem is that the resolutely northern personna I brought south 16 years ago has been whittled away. I think I might be turning into a southerner.

tuppenceworth · 20/12/2005 23:48

Do you still have mushy peas with your fish and chips though?? Or have you migrated to jellied eels?? (eeughhh!)

I'm from Doncaster originally, a South Yorkshire lass through and through!

hativity · 20/12/2005 23:51

I drink expressos and my children say "glarss". Still like a pint of bitter though.

pinkmama · 20/12/2005 23:58

DH dragged me south from my native yorkshire. Although I do still have mushy peas I was upset to realise that after only 4 years in exile I was caught saying something was "ghaaaaaaaaaastly" the other day! It wont be long before I am baaaaaaathing and daaaaaaaancing will it?

hativity · 21/12/2005 00:02

I still have baths and still dance. But my children correct me. (defintely needs reading in context...

tuppenceworth · 21/12/2005 00:04

DS and me were feeding the ducks a few weeks ago and a bloke came up to us and said 'are they ducks or dacks?' Made me smile! Since I moved back 'down south' to Nottinghamshire/Yorkshire/Derbyshire my accent has become very regional!

pinkmama · 21/12/2005 00:07

DS was born down south and talks about 'castles' and 'caaaastles'. Think he thinks they are two entirely different words because the first time we went to one we were with a southern friend and obviously we were both saying it differently.

tuppenceworth · 21/12/2005 00:23

Now that ex and I have been separated a fair few months I find myself smiling when ds says ''ere y'are' for 'here you are' when he's passing me something and 'bucks' for books and 'cubbards' for cupboards. It's a regional dialect that he's going to have to get used to, even though I don't speak with a broad accent.

Becca81 · 21/12/2005 13:21

Hi All,

Many thanks for your messages. I have only just checked back today as I've been running round like a blue you know what! (just like the rest of us!

Its lovely to know I'm not the only one with Castle and caaastles. I have got into the habit of saying Caaar. DS doesn't have any of my accent, but thinks its extremely funny if I do a broad Yorkshire one for him!

As for the mushy peas GROSS! I couldn't eat them if I was paid for it.. and jellied eels? Pass me a bucket. [is there a sicky emoticon?]

Pinkmama, I'm also down here because of DH. I remember when we met we couldn't tell what each other was saying.

Thanks all for your replies, I'm looking foward to going home just after christmas.
Hope you all have a good one, where ever you are in the country!!

Cheers, B. x
