Hi Rebi......... not from Ireland but Irish in UK. Whereabouts are you, there must be more paddys here I'm sure of it

JanZ · 20/08/2003 12:54

Butterflymum lives in Northern Ireland (although she's actually Scottish).

Rebi · 20/08/2003 13:15

Hiya Angelmother - good to hear from you! I am living in Northern Ireland, Bangor - but spent my adolescent years in Dublin. Previous to that was in England! Bit of a gipsy really. Where are you from and where are you now?

Thanks Janz - a lot of Scottish people living here - we're all blow-ins! Hopefully Butterflymum will respond!

ANGELMOTHER · 20/08/2003 18:05

Rebi I'm a born and bred Dubliner, but have been here nearly 5 years. Spent most of that in South West London but the last year in Surrey.

Often dream about moving home but have to say am very happy where I am, would like to move back into London though but house prices !*?/@ Aaargh !
Might be moving to Manchester soon, but that's another story.

Have one angelic dd (hence the Nickname..no reflection on my mothering skills ) and another dd on the way in about a month.

I'm afraid I don't know Bangor at all, I was one of those Dublin people who didn't know where the road out of Dublin was but found the airport several times

Where in Dublin did you live ??

I'm sure there must be more of us on here though

Grommit · 20/08/2003 18:24

Rebi - I am from N. Ireland and know Bangor well! Living in Herts now...

I post from Liverpool but am from Cork!

Rebi · 21/08/2003 08:30

Hello everybody! My goodness I think some of our paths have crossed before!

Angelmother, I lived in Dalkey for quite some time and consider that home still - talking of house prices in London, I would love to be able to afford Dublin (especially Dalkey!) prices!! I was one of those people who only knew from the sea as far as Cornelscourt dual carriageway as far as O'Connell Street - what a southsider!! What age is your dd1? What date are you due? I have ds aged 7 and dd aged 7 months.

Hiya Grommit - what part of Herts are you living in? I lived in East Barnet (don't remember much of it mind you!!)

Maryz - I probably should know this (I recognise your name) but do you have SN in your family? Yes, provision seems to be far far better here than down South. My Mum is a teacher and the educational side of things seems to be just taking off. Are you from Dublin? What part?

Hi eyelash, how long have you lived in Liverpool?

Questions, questions!! Sorry if I'm compromising anyones annoymonity (sp?!) It would be weird if any of us ended up knowing each other! I suppose I have walked down Oxford Street on occasion and bumped into old school friends, so its possible!

Better go and pretend to do some work!! Hope to talk to you later!

OP posts:
Grommit · 21/08/2003 09:58

Rebi - I live in Hemel Hempstead now but used to live in North Finchley and had friends living in East Barnet!! Small world

Harrysmum · 21/08/2003 09:58

Not from NI and not living there but DH is from Bangor and we go there lots. It sometimes feels like his family populate most of Bangor.

Rebi · 21/08/2003 10:36

Grommit, It IS a small world! Getting more so all the time I think!! Where in N Ireland are you from?

Harrysmum, I know what you mean. Bangorians seem to stay put (my dh is from here and thats how I managed to be here - I presume yours had moved away before you met him!?) and as a result have family all over the place here! I started working in a new job in May and have come across 3 relatives already in this building, that I hadn't met!!! Glad to hear its not just my dh's family overpopulating the area though ! Nice enough place to live, I was a city girl before and was a bit shellshocked initially, but facilities are great and I have now got used to everything being on a smaller scale! And everyone knowing you before you meet them!

OP posts:
Harrysmum · 21/08/2003 12:22

Hi Rebi, dh had indeed left Bangor when I met him so it was a close run thing! We love visiting and it means that we can make lots of relatives happy in one fell swoop but I don't think I could handle the pressure of raising my boys in such a goldfish bowl. What are the odds that you're dh and mine are related/went to the same school/have friends in common?

Rebi · 21/08/2003 12:38

Harrysmum -It is very scary to contemplate that the world is so small that your dh and my dh could know each other!!!! But you're probably right! If you like send Mumsnet a request to forward your email address and we could chat there?! Find out all the gos!!

Have you ever thought of moving here? How old are your 2(?) boys? I presume one named Harry?! (btw Love that name - my dd would have been called Harry if she had been ds!)

BearintheBigBlueHous · 21/08/2003 12:41

Bear's from God's own country too - North Down edge of Belfast to be precise, with family in Bangor. Echoing Rebi's/Harrysmum's comments, I left 18 years ago for London because everyone knew everyone else and perversely now I miss it and that kind of family/community thing. Taking dp & dd over for a week next week, packing our umbrellas.

Rebi · 21/08/2003 13:08

Hee hee Bear!

I think everyone misses where they grew up, but after a week or so back I always realise I have changed too much to ever slot into where I was before - it would never be the same as what I remember!

In a way (sometimes!) I enjoy the whole fishbowl thing though! My family never lived where other members of family were, so this is a whole new experience for me. Although I've been here for 10 years now, so not so new I suppose!!

What part of North Down btw - Holywood? Sydenham? Cultra?

Enjoy your trip home - we've had brilliant weather recently - this is first wet day in about 3-4 weeks! Maybe it knows your coming?

Jimjams · 21/08/2003 20:40

DH from Belfast. We live in Devon though. We didn't go to N Ireland this year but will do next year (we have a "proper" holiday one year and do the family thing the other). We should go over more often but there's no way I would risk ds1 on a plane atm (bit of an autism connection here isn't there ) and its a long way to Stranraer from Devon (we also visit SIL in Glasgow on the way)

gosh2 · 22/08/2003 08:59

Hi North Down mums! How cool there are loads. I was back home about 2 weeks ago, sitting in ice cream shop in D'dee. It was scorching. Phoned DH to say were having a great time and he said it was raining in London. So Bearinthebigbluehous you may not need that brolly!!

Now living in Surrey. That was my first time back in a year. Had to take DD who has never been and is now 10 mths. Bad of me not to have been out before, should go more often.

Rebi · 22/08/2003 09:00

Hi Maryz - I know what you mean about house prices! My friend bought a house (large 60's semi) in Dalkey (yes one of us managed to buy a house there!) 10 years ago for £120,000 and we thought she was completely mad, as needed lots of work - can't imagine what it is worth now! My sister and he dh moved to Dublin couple of years ago - she is a physio and he is head of department of psychology in some college beside Westbury (in other words - good jobs!) and they do not have a chance in hell of buying a house! Nightmare!

I haven't been to Tullymore but believe its lovely - I keep saying we should go camping but never quite manage it - although dh has an aversion to it (bad childhood experiences, I think!) so that doesn't help!

I also have dd of 7 months - so sometimes feel like a first time mum after such a long break! Do you have any other children besides ds?

Yep ds has hf autism (speech difficulties (not so bad now) so not AS), its a small world! Are there support groups for you? I get the impression things are really starting to improve there? Wasn't there some court case in the last few years, by a mother who got no help for her son, or something?

Jimjams - my parents live 5 hours away and it is so hard to get to see them as much as want to / should! And we only have to get in car - so know what you mean!

Better run - boss hovering!!!

Lovely to talk to you!

nerdgirl · 22/08/2003 09:49

Hi Rebi,

Another southside girl here. Though I live in Meath now and I married a northsider so I don't know what that makes my two boys ( who are 3 and 5 years old ). Sons of the Royal county I guess! But I'll always be a Rathfarnham girl at heart.

BTW, I think BigBird and Brookstone are Irish too.

Rebi · 22/08/2003 10:22

Bloody hell Gosh2! Do all mumsnetters from this corner of the globe move away?!! Is there something I should know?!!!

Hiya nerdgirl!! Are you also a Loreto girl by any chance?! I know what you mean about visiting home. My parents moved to Wexford, where I have never lived, so it is even harder to fit in, as I try to get to Dublin too. Although we are going this weekend and the sunny southeast BETTER be sunny! I think the weather forecast is good, so hopefully will get to beach - yippee!

OP posts:
Grommit · 22/08/2003 10:30

Rebi - I originally come from S.Belfast - my parents are still there and I get home about 3 times per year. I miss the coast and the beaches and my parents of course but I married and Englishman and have lived here now for many years - I have quite a few childhood friends who live in the South East so that is nice

Brookstone · 22/08/2003 13:07

Hey nerdgirl, you're right-i'm Irish as well. A Dub (northsider) living not far from Manchester. Only moved away cos I fell in love!!!!!!!!!!!!

Angelmother, is your move to Manchester still on the cards?

Rebi · 22/08/2003 13:18

btw nerdgirl, just read my last posting and comments re visiting home were meant for Gosh2!

Brookstone - like you it was love that pulled me away from Dublin!! Is it always the woman who moves?! It appears to be!

Hiya Grommit - what part of England did you end up? How far are those coastline from you?!

OP posts:
nerdgirl · 23/08/2003 10:56

Nah not a Loretto girl, Rebi. I went to Sancta Maria. Sorry about the weather this weekend. But then, this is Ireland! My grandfather had a rule about predicting the weather over here -

'If you can see the mountains it's going to rain and if you can't see the mountains IT IS RAINING!!'
