Hello NC but longtime poster. I desperately need a new career path after returning from mat leave. Ideally something like an apprenticeship or retraining with funding but I have no idea what to do.
About me:
Qualified History Teacher for 5 years.
34
Previously worked in HR before that for 3 years and a charity for 2.
Single parent to a 1yr old with no family support.
I have complex health issues.
Little to no pension.

Ideally, looking for a wfh role or something that would be in demand.

I am very academic and I believe could turn my hand to most things, I just don't want to retrain for too long and not receive a salary as I'm the only earner providing for me and my dc.

Ideally, something that is a good earner (even if longterm, so I can add to my pension pot), wfh, part-time opportunities.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be so very grateful. Thank you!

As you’ve got some HR experience I would look at that so you don’t have to start at the bottom but consider upskilling yourself and moving into a more specialist role - L&D (especially Digital), Talent Development / Recruitment. You could look within a charity as there tend to be more hybrid/remote roles and I would expect more disability aware and welcoming.

As with pp I'd agree to build on your HR experience. My suggestion below:

Take a look at HR roles within construction, engineering and tech/data/cyber companies as that's where the skills shortages are and where the money is.

Majority of roles in charities/nfp pay less than equivalent roles in private sector.

If you want a role where you feel you're making a difference to society, start in HR in the private sector with an aim to move internally into an ESG/social value type of role.
