Feeling terrible having just started

I have just started Paleo and I feel terible! Very down and with no energy or motivation. And my sleep is disrupted and I having very vivid dreams that make me grind my teeth. Is this normal? I had a little white rice with dinner last night and had a great sleep and feel better this morning.

Make sure you have electrolytes, I always feel dreadful if I don’t and go too low carb. You could also taper the carbs down, sometimes too quickly can be too much.

I gave up caffeine at the same time. Not for long, mind but . I hear ya!

ScottishStag · 21/01/2026 08:17

Luckily, I don't have caffeine - I can only imagine the pain!
I think tapering will work better for me and electrolytes sound like a great idea - hadn't though of that.
How long does it take to start feeling better?

When switching to low carb it generally takes me a week to get over the initial side effects (and sugar withdrawal). Like others have said really up your fluids and electrolytes can really help. I use High5 Zero blackcurrant.

Google Carb Flu.

You are essentially in withdrawal.

I know, but I feel so low and unmotivated ( and I am naturally unmotivated anyway😉) that it feels like something is really wrong. I am rubbish on bad sleep. Have just ordered some electrolytes, will taper and cross fingers.
Is it also normal to feel this hungry? I have just had a big high protein breakfast.

Why have you chosen to do paleo? The diet doesn't suit everyone. Some thrive on it, some don't. I am definitely the latter, carbs give me energy and are good for my mood. Without carbs, I am lethargic, grumpy and miserable!

I have done it before when I had cancer - 8 years ago for 2 years and felt amazing. I also have ADHD and a dodgy thyroid - so gluten/sugar are not great for me and I need to lose some menopausal weight. Got it all going on!
