What am I doing wrong?

I'm 3 weeks into keto and I've gained 2 lbs and then lost that 2lbs.
So today I'm at my starting weight. I don't know where I'm going wrong.
I've got an app that I input food into so I'm under 1500cals per day, plenty water.
Do you think it will just suddenly kick in soon and I'll make some progress? Feel like giving up today!!

What's a typical day's food/drink for you? What time of day do you weight yourself?

Handsnotwands · 26/05/2022 10:01

what are you eating? i ignore calories and just keep carbs low. some things you might not expect are high in carbs, are you checking that you're eating the lowest carb veg etc?

Itsmyturn2222 · 26/05/2022 17:34

I'm inputting everything into my app so I know I'm under 25g carbs per day
Chicken, Meats, steaks, pork, Cheeses, sour cream, cream, salad, eggs,
Drinking water, coffee with unsweetened almond milk, sweetners
Peanut butter on a spoon
Peanut butter on Celery
Peanuts as snacks
I'm keeping at it!! It's hard when I can't see progress though

What's your TDEE? 1500 is maintenance for me although if low carb I didn't count calories.
It dropped off me when I did it so it does seem odd on 25g a day.

Kaiken · 26/05/2022 20:09

Stop eating peanuts and peanut butter. They are extremely fattening.
You are probably eating. too many calories. Low carb , low fat or whatever method, it comes down to calories in the end.

Itsmyturn2222 · 26/05/2022 20:51

I'm just so exhausted and starving on it!! Tell me it gets easier, also how many weeks in please?

Do you know you're actually in ketosis (do you check?)? Peanut butter is actually 20% carbohydrate so you may find it's knocking you out?

Then maybe it is not the right diet for you. Not everyone thrives on it. There isn't one diet fits all. There isn't anything magical in the low carb. When put to the test in hospital setting, there isn't really any advantage.

Kevin Hall is the doctor who does all these tests in clinics, locking people up for weeks without access to external food and he reviews all his findings over the course of decades in this presentation

The diet that will work for you is the one you can maintain , otherwise the second you stop, you gain back and more.

BIWI · 02/06/2022 23:06

A couple of things - firstly, you're not eating much veg. Why is that?

Second, you've only listed the foods you're eating, not your meals. List those out, and perhaps we can help you more.

And finally - if you're starving that suggests that you're not eating enough fat. Low carbing is a high fat diet.

Are you weighing everything? If you aren't losing you are eating too many calories, low carb or not.

LondonMaybe · 02/06/2022 23:36

People say to weight once a week, but I actually find it better to weigh every day. You change so much day ti day that you’ll see the overall trend much better. Drop the peanut everything, they can be inflammatory for some. If you want to do keto properly you need to get a blood monitor or urine sticks to check you are in ketosis at the start and get an app to monitor your macros, some of the purist groups will tell you to actually up your calories to start with.

This is your answer. It comes down to calorie deficit. Some will scream calories don't matter on low carb/keto, but it is wrong.
You are either eating more than you think or the allowance you have given yourself is too high.
Or you could swap for a low fat diet for a week and see which one suits you better

collieresponder88 · 03/06/2022 09:21

Why don't you just eat healthily instead of doing a diet. Cut out all sugary and fatty snacks. Eat mainly things that grow. You can't go wrong with that

failinghard · 04/06/2022 23:12

To the people who say it's all about the calorie deficit, that isn't the case with low carb. You are switching your body from burning carbs for fuel to burning fat for fuel (shifting into ketosis), so you need lots of good fats - nut/olive oils, avocado, soft cheeses, coconut oil. No calorie counting.

Low fat = sugar. Sugar is the enemy not fat. Read up about blood sugar regulation and insulin resistance. Lower carb and higher fat is a healthier way to live.

Easy on the peanut butter (start again and don't have any for first two weeks), include lots and lots of green veg, and a really diverse array of fats and proteins.

Kaiken · 05/06/2022 03:26

@failinghard disproven science.

Real science, the one that doesn't sell books or subscription, but makes you a professor at Stanford, Yale, ...

Dearmariacountmein · 05/06/2022 03:39

From experience:

  • Your carb allowance is too high and not you aren't in ketosis

  • you need to up your fat

  • your eating more carbs than you think

  • you need to drop calories

Keto works if done to the letter but it’s easy, if not, to end up on a high fat bit low enough carb diet and not lose.

MissSmiley · 05/06/2022 10:48

Get a monitor off Amazon to test your blood to see if you're in ketosis, I suspect the peanuts are knocking you out. It can also take quite a long time first time of doing this to achieve ketosis and get your body into fat burning mode. It does work, I lost 2 stone in 2016 like this, I found it worked really well for me and I wasn't hungry at all once in fat burning mode, in fact that was maybe the only downside, the fact that my appetite dropped off to nothing
