Depression and low carb?

Hi,

I wonder if anyone has experienced if mood improving or deteriorating on low carb?

I have been reading quite a few negative reviews on the impact of low carb on mood and would appreciate people’s actual experiences? Thanks so much

I'm no expert but I think this is very multifactorial
We are in lockdown, a time of uncertainty , most pleasures we are used to have been denied to us recently ...
When ( like now ) I am feeling unfit , unhealthy overweight I do feel down , my clothes don't fit well or look good , my face looks awful
My hair is another cause of great upset - I can't go 5 weeks without a trim or 6 weeks without root touch up , now I look like a shaggy dog
When I start to lose weight , feel better , look better ... my mood will automatically lift and I will feel more motivated and want to carry on
Until some very small emotional upset will kick me in the gut and I'll be knee deep in chocolate and telling myself what a waste of space I am . Again
Not sure if that helps or makes sense Daffodil

Hi Jannyapple,

So with you with the hair and ... sigh can now see how much grey I have! Depressing in itself.

I think depression is obviously multifactorial but mine is hugely hormonal too - I had been reading ketogensis can help (and in other cases hinder!).

It sounds like you may have suffered too? Thank you for answering. Like you say it’s challenging on lockdown. I still have to work at full throttle and it’s quite stressful so undoubtedly not helping.

I certainly have
I've beaten myself up emotionally for years over my weight and to be honest 2.5 stone would do it ... I know it could be worse but it's all relative is it not
I'm an emotional binger, always have been , secret eater
I live alone and still hide wrappers and things in cupboards lol
I'd love to know more about the hormonal side ...
My mood is good at the moment , I hope it can continue

Big hugs - I also resonate with emotional eating. It’s too easy isn’t it you feel really flat and garb something.

What has worked for me in the past was jogging (yes I know) I had a period whereby work was less stressful (then I got promoted!), I was very into prioritising me (which felt indulgent and selfish) but I also started to feel more confident and resilient. Part exercise, part being outside, part good sleep. My hormones have gone to pop since too.

Oh and I also did intermittent fasting. I’ve totally blown it for the last 6 months but that did. Work and I was / can be just like you have said. It is possible to be in remission and recover. So there is hope and I’m v interested in low carb affecting mood. If anything can help, some have said it below with pmt.

Ironically I binge on carbs when my mood is low - or maybe not that ironic as soporific

@Itshotoday I've tried jogging but could never get my lungs to coordinate with my legs ... walking however or cycling I can go for hours ... miss Zumba too
Let's be kind to ourselves

Definitely. Take care and I’ll keep you posted if I find a cure Grin seriously if anything helps.

I keep hearing about the live online classes Facebook or otherwise ... maybe some Zumba in there?
