Need Keto advice

I’m on day 3-feeling good and not hungry etc, but really struggling to keep at 20g carbs-I’ve been keeping tabs on Fitbit and with even only a few bits of veg/salad I’m over 20g (I’ve just in out an avocado and it said that it had 17g of carbs).

I’m fine not having fruit but I don’t see how I can keep healthy on veg and keep carbs low. Any advice would be appreciated!

An avocado doesn't have that many carbs? More like 2-4g of carbs.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 24/02/2020 16:15

Nutracheck gives these values...

Thank you-it did seem excessive (I’d sort of thought you’d be fine to eat then relatively freely).

I am doing Keto but not keen on avocados - I see lots do eat them though so thought they can't be that bad! Lol

I’m finding the Diet Doctor website and FB group helpful for keto. They go through all the pitfalls. Also, you can use net carbs, ie ignore the fibre which isn’t digested, which makes avos etc fit in better. www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/keto

The 'total carbs' on U.K. nutrition info has already had the fibre deducted so that is the figure to use. Only in the US do you deduct the fibre.

SparklingLime · 25/02/2020 18:20

Yes, but many tracking apps such as MFP (and possibly OP’s FitBit) are US-based so it’s worth be aware of the difference. Here is MFP showing US-style total carbs (including fibre) for avo.

I've been using the carb manager app and the advice I have seen is to put in the shop where you got the item from so it gives the UK values. I put Tesco avocado or whatever and then select the amount. Can you do that for yours?

siblingrevelryagain · 29/02/2020 06:26

Yes I can-i purchased a new app (just called ‘Keto’ and it has a wide range of product choice by name/shop/quantity etc, so that’s hopefully getting a more accurate view.

It’s been a week since I started, and although I generally feel good I feel nauseous and headachy first thing most mornings so I’m hoping that’s a sign it’s working!

That's a sign that your electrolytes are not right. You need magnesium tablets and potassium rich foods. As well as lots of pink salt in your food

There are lots of UK based Facebook groups for keto. For me, they are great help

GetTheStartyParted · 29/02/2020 14:25

Yes, i agree, I've joined lots of Facebook groups, great for advice, recipes, support and inspiration.

Good luck with it. I'm coming up to 5 weeks in and feeling great. It's so easy to stick to as you don't feel hungry. I can plan my meals and stick to them.

I also use 'carb manager' on my phone. I use the free version, no need to pay for one! They also have a forum so you can ask questions. I found using a set of scales really helps, because I was under estimating the weight of many things. Plenty of water too. I've lost 10kg in about 4mths. I also fast, so generally only eat 2 meals a day. I have black coffee in the morning, but often not hungry till lunch.

Day 3 you are likely still going through 'keto flu'. Stick with it, because that does pass and it gets easier.
