Hello! Day One Done - anyone want to join me?

SharkSkinThing · 29/09/2015 20:43

Just wanted to say hello and see if any other new starters wanted to buddy up for support and advice?

I've got 3 - 4 stone to lose, all gained AFTER having my DS who is now - god help me - 5. All down to long-term sleep deprivation and sugar reliance, and forming terrible habits. And wine to help me cope with the sleep deprivation,

Anyway, hoping to finally turn things around now that he's finally sleeping (sometimes until 5.30am!). Would love to chat to others who are finding that this WOE works for them.

xx

Yes, get well soon, fit - and I agree - whatever food/drink helps, apply liberally!

devon, your posts always make me smile! Sorry you're not in the zone - maybe you don't need to loose weight and your body is fighting it!! These wintery night don't help as you say, and the clocks, and the loveliness that is wine! I have no tips for resisiting, really...I shared a bottle of red with DP last night so have no doubt screwed up my Sat weigh in....oh well!

I've not watched Brooklyn 9 9 but I love a good heads up! I love a good old session in front of the telly!

Happy Friday people! xxxx

Yes wine is definitely my problem. And chocolate. Giving up sugar is solo hard. I totally emphasise. I am currently eating my weight in salt and vinegar peanuts from M&S despite feeling quite sick and full much of the time. And tired and grumpy too. Is this the carb flu I've heard about or just actual flu? Matters not helped by DS2 hating all the fireworks and refusing to stop screaming hysterically without me shush patting him to sleep last night. Not the worst thing in the world, but I really wanted dinner! Anyway, day 5 today and six weeks to work Xmas party, my current goal for a 7lb weight loss. Meant to weigh this morning, but forgot, so will try Wednesday when I hope to start exercising again. Ordered some work out clothes from Boden last night (oh the joys/perils of Internet shopping) so fingers crossed they arrive before then so I can chuck the smelly h&m ones.

devoncreamtea · 06/11/2015 15:46

Hi everyone!

Well today I set fire to a tray of kale crisps!!! I opened the oven after a measly 3 mins and the grease proof paper was fully aflame, I had to don an oven glove and dash to the sink...my smoke alarm did not go off however. It goes off if you look sideways at a crumpet, but stony silence in the presence of flames. Comforting....

Weighed today (well everyday...) and 9 12 - I'll take that! I hope it stays below 10 now, that will be very motivating.

I like the sound of salt and vinegar peanuts, yum!

M and s are good at snacks, I am addicted to the cheese stuffed red pepper tapas type things - they are amazing, spicy and sweet.

My big girl has gone on the train alone for the first time today! Hope she remembers to get off...and tomorrow 2 of them are off to a sleepover. Weirdly, even though I still have 3 kids at home to deal with, it feels like a lovely rest....

Tonight I am making a strange concoction involving celeriac yoghurt, egg and mince....lets hope it is edible!

Have good weekends everyone!

SharkSkinThing · 06/11/2015 20:39

Shit. My last lovely and well-written post has disappeared.

Ok:

devon you are hilarious and your cooking terrifies me. Mince and...yogurt?

But - well done on 9.12, bloody awesome! And I hope your child-reduced weekend is lovely.

rosa - damn you and your salt and vinegar nut, for I shall not rest until I have my mits on some.

Will post Sat weigh in first thing. It had better be at least 14.1 after the evil, evil spin class I did today.

SharkSkinThing · 07/11/2015 07:32

14.2 here so just through the one stone barrier at 1.1 stone lost. Annoyed it's slowed down but a loss is a loss, even if it is only 1.5 pounds!

Xxx

rosalux · 07/11/2015 09:55

Sorry about the salt & vinegar peanuts everyone, they truly are the devil's work. KP do them as well, btw, but M&S are cheaper (£1 a pack I think). Anyhow.

I meant to weigh yesterday and then weekly on Fridays, but forgot, so I did it this morning and it said 9st 7.5lb! I do feel less bloated, but not 5lb less, but I didn't want to try again and watch the numbers shoot up like a poster up-thread. I'm going to try weighing again next Friday, although I think I'm due that weekend, so maybe I'll avoid the scales for a fortnight. Ho hum. Still feel to weak to exercise, though my new kit arrived from Boden this morning - the Boden lady calls so often at our house I think I'll have to get her an xmas present this year - so maybe that will motivate me. DH has taken DS1 out to gymnastics and I have left DS2 in the capable hands of Bing Bunny whilst I try to research fancy dress/children in need outfits for DS1 on Friday. I really thought once he went to school life would get easier, but these days having kids at school seems to be a full time job!

Good weekend vibes everyone. Keep on Keeping on.

Thefitfatty · 08/11/2015 05:28

Well I finally seem to be coming out of the grips of this damned flu, and am fully back on the low carb thing today. DS found the scales under the bed yesterday and insisted on weighing everything, including Mummy, however I was pleased to see that despite the pretty bad week/weekend and it being the day before AF visited, I've lost 5lbs in 2 weeks of low carbing.

My goal is a stone by December 3rd (my mother is coming to visit :P ) so good progress. :)

SharkSkinThing · 08/11/2015 07:40

No worries, Rosa - I personally love a god head's up on tasty and new snacks to indulge in! Plus, now I have an excuse to go to M&S!

Boden stuff sounds nice, I hope it does the trick! I love their stuff, but only when it's in the sale! I got a great stripy top from the charity shop yesterday - Seasalt no less! For £3.50! Very happy about that little bargain.

School - yep - it's a bloody nightmare! DS is in Y1, and whilst the school are great with their newsletters, they still text at weird (6pm) times to remind you of some event or other that now requires a costume. Or a donation. it's Children in Need on Friday, so no doubt some spotty clothing will be required. Have to admit I often pick up a cheap t-shirt from Asda! Creative Mummy I am not...

fit welcome back to the land of the well. Glad to hear you are feeling better, with a loss to boot! Well done. Smile

Right, I have a quiet hour whilst DP and DS watch telly and faff about before I take DS swimming, so I'm being very good and cracking on with some research for my course. Then I will eat a huge plate of buttery scrambled eggs and mushrooms!

Happy Sunday - it's actually stopped raining here in West Sussex finally! Wink

FavadiCacao · 09/11/2015 10:11

Hello, may I join you?

I'm ashamed to admit that I regained all 12kgs (plus 3 more) that I had lost last year with the Scarsedale diet, which I had done to lose the 6Kg I had regained due to carb, alcohol and cheese creep (which were not coming back off on Primal).

I can't believe I'm here again! I had lost a total of 35Kgs on Primal and maintained for ~2 yrs before I succumbed to Ds's request to learn how to make homemade gluten free Pasta and Tortilla wraps... Oh why are old habits so darn hard to get rid off?

Thefitfatty · 09/11/2015 10:22

why are old habits so darn hard to get rid off?

Because they're so damned tasty and relaxing.

The hardest thing for me is giving up my glass of two or wine in the evening. I just associate it with that time the kids are in bed and it's time to relax (and also because a nice cold white wine is just so tasty). I really want to cut it down to the weekends but then I just sit there once the kids are in bed feeling sleepy and wondering what to do with myself. Confused

devoncreamtea · 09/11/2015 10:34

Hi everyone!

Welcome to favAdicacao excellent name btw!

I hear you on the old habits dying hard.....I read that it takes 21 days to reset a habit. Doesn't seem that long until you try it!!!

I like the primal diet, but I can also see that it is way easy to do replacements for things like bread, muffins, pancakes etc when really what we want to do is get away from that mindset and into a new veg, meat, healthy fat mindset....but it is very hard especially with kids.

Haven't weighed today !! But yesterday was 9 13 which is hopeful as I thought the below 10 one was an anomaly....

Had steak last night, with salad and avocado and a creamy sauce. Was really nice.

Update on the mince and yoghurt concoction. Horrendous. The only one that seemed to like it was the baby and he was just grateful to be fed. Another one to cross off the list!!!!!

SharkSkinThing · 09/11/2015 10:35

Hello fav!

Firstly - no shame here - we're all here because we have eaten too much! We all have perfectly valid reasons (kids, busy lives, sleep deprivation, calamities, old habits), but it's certainly why I'm here!

So - take a deep breath, cut yourself some slack, and join the fun. As the wise and mighty fit has said - old habits are damned tasty and relaxing!

You did it once before, and you can do it again.

fit - hell, yes, I'm with you here. I drank twice this week (half a bottle of red one night with DP, a WHOLE bottle of chardonnay to myself on Sat, triggered cos DS wouldn't settle with all the fireworks going on so I was stropping about not being able to study. What a princess. But it was delicious!).

So...I have no answers other than trying your best, and if you want them, count them in and find a way to offset them. An extra 10 mins on the weights perhaps?

Hope everyone else is well and good luck this week! It's my b'day on Weds but we're going to have a Thai curry (no rice) as they are fab for low-carb. But I'll be drinking!!!!

xxx

FavadiCacao · 09/11/2015 10:46

They are certainly tasty and relaxing!

My biggest downfalls are fruit, ''cheese and tomato toasties'' and ''cheese, ham, mushroom and tomato toasties''.

Could you find a little hobby to occupy yourself in the evening?

Thefitfatty · 09/11/2015 10:49

Have you looked at the Diet Doctors Low Carb, High fat? Because you can still eat berries as a treat, and tomato's are relatively ok.

Honestly, tonight I'll probably just go to sleep after the kids do. I've an early morning tomorrow and was up late last night. I'm also thinking I should replace wine with a cup of tea....

FavadiCacao · 09/11/2015 10:50

Thanks Shark. Crossed-post as I was on the phone!

I'm going for the ketogenic primal approach. For the first time ever I've managed to get into ketosis without feeling ill (8 days in). I suspect cutting back on the protein has helped. :)

FavadiCacao · 09/11/2015 11:09

I love a herbal/green tea in the evening. :)

I like the dietdoctor. Currently I'm tempted my 'The meal revolution...' book by Prof Noak. As all of the recipes show the macronutrients. I'm really kin to find other fat sources/sauces to had to my list.

I am also going to try to leave most dairy out other than a little bit of parmesan and a bit of homemade hard cheese. I know I bloat badly and gain weight overnight with yogurt, cream and butter but I am fine with a bit of hard cheese. I add the lactobacillus cultures to homemade sausages/burgers (and I'm making salami for the time, curing now)

Thefitfatty · 09/11/2015 11:42

I couldn't live without cheese and butter. I made chicken wings last night with a sauce that was entirely butter and sriracha. I felt so decadent, but it was delicious.

I usually have real bloating issues, but within days of cutting out carbs and fruit my bloating is all but gone!

FavadiCacao · 09/11/2015 12:09

I feel a bit down about the idea of giving up almost all cheese -I love cheese, I adore cheese- but everytime I cut it down for long periods I lose weight and everytime I eat more, with or without bread (aubergines are even nicer!), the weight goes up in chunks. I'll be fine for a couple of days and then 2 or more kgs go on. Adding fruit to the daily cheese gave me a recipe for 15 kgs gain in 4 months! Shock

I had huge problems with bloating too until I started low carbing, I'm now alright up to 80-100g/day which means the '1/2 a loaf of bread days' can't exist

Thefitfatty · 09/11/2015 12:34

I lost weight when I cut out most cheese and was on WW. But I just can't calorie count for the rest of my life. I'm hoping this will be something sustainable, and cutting out cheese will not be sustainable for me!

FavadiCacao · 09/11/2015 14:11

I don't know either how sustainable is going to be without/little cheese; I recently even bought an expensive book on how to make the pure pale yellow deliciousness!

I would love, I need to find a permanent solution to the silly weight yo-yo. Like you, I'm fed up of counting calories (or carbs). I'm hoping the answer lies in mastering a ketogenic diet, which is proving quite tasking dairy free(ish). :(

I am using beef and lamb drippings, goose fat, lard (home rendered as the shop ones have additives) and coconut oil for cooking but I'm discovering the fat content is not always enough. To get enough I would need to eat a lot more protein, which I think was causing me to be ill whenever I had attempted ketosis before. In the long term, I'm curing super fatty pork belly to turn into 'lardo di colonnata' and lamb breast to turn into Lambcetta for high fat cold/fast/no-mess/no-cooking/take-with-you/etc. meals.

I'm struggling a bit with the range of fat sauces. So far I have made 'avocado mint sauce', thai green paste to accompany coconut milk, pesto (with a small amount of parmesan), mayo made with olive oil. I need more ideas, please! :)

devoncreamtea · 09/11/2015 15:26

Blimey fav you make your own cheese! Very cool.

I am doing a rubbish bloody job again this week, but heAring about your cheese and fat rendering has re-motivated me! I have some really nice paleo books with recipes, I will look up sauces for you. Actually though, I think they have a website - the book is called 'nom nom Paleo' I like it, loads of ideas for food.

What about goats cheese fav does that make a difference? I find it is so goaty that you don't need as much?

Tonight I am once again entertaining mince at my table, this time though I am going conventional and doing a chilli, brown rice for kids, little baked sweet pot for me and the baby.

Also have to make some things for school festival and some spelt and oatmeal biscuits for kids lunch boxes.its all go in my kitchen!

Kids driving me up the wall, massive laundry mountain to sort out and dp at work till 10! Monday is hideous.

Bon chance!

FavadiCacao · 09/11/2015 17:19

Your kitchen sounds busier than mine, devon!

Funny you should mention NomNom Paleo. Her recipe of homemade sausages inspired me to buy sausage making kit!Grin
I lost all my bookmarks in recent computer crash, so I can't link to the original paleo bacon inspirational recipe...I might have to post my version (or I might look for an old paleo thread on here)! is the youtube video of Parma ham making- which is even easier than it looks (less than 10 mins prep time and a month or 2 wrapped in a tea towel in the fridege)!

Cream cheese is super simple to make: Milk and lemon juice with 10 mins cooking time and ready to eat in under 2hrs! I have only just started making rennet based cheeses: my first Italian hard cheese should be ready in a few days and the bries in a week or two.
I seem to be fine with some cheeses like real Grana or Parmigiano and my local artisan well seasoned cheddar (no junk added and from raw milk) which is why I'm learning how to make cheese.
I also seem to be fine with small quantities of homemade soft cheese made from raw milk (expensive and not readily available) but not normal milk, I haven't tried with non-homogenised milk yet.

Tonight I'm cooking oxtail cooked with a little bacon, tomatoes and a bit of stock served with Romanesco cauli for mois but dh and ds will also get potatoes. :)

Thefitfatty · 10/11/2015 05:39

Home made sausages and cheese! Wow. I'm very impressed. Honestly, if it takes longer then 40 minutes to make in the evening, it's not happening. Last night we had BB-Q's pork chops and sauteed red spinach with garlic and vinegar, the night before was homemade chicken wings and steamed broccoli with relatively home made cheese sauce (obviously I did not make the cheese myself ;P). Tonight is sashimi with some roasted seaweed.

FavadiCacao · 10/11/2015 11:33

Thank you Fit, Devon and Shark for holding my hand yesterday. Flowers
I feel quite reinvigorated today.
I did go through some old threads and found the Bacon recipe but most importantly I rediscovered myself!
I should really fill ''my little black book'' with the many recipes have written on here over the years.
I also discovered where and how I started to go wrong again.
