Periods

I am 47 and for the last 18 months or so, my periods were becoming increasingly irregular. Never early, but often very late and sometimes completely absent (initially resulting in unnecessary expenditure on pregnancy tests and then disappointment Sad !). However, after two months of strict low carbing, I seem to be back into my old 28 day cycle. Now I know that 2 months is not really enough to prove a trend, but it is a change. Anyone else noticed and changes in this respect?

I'm 51 and hadn't had a period for almost a year, started low carbing in April and my periods have returned. I am very overweight so I wonder if they'd stopped because of my weight rather than the menopause, ditto the hot flushes.

Sorry that you were sad at the pregnancy test results Boarding Sad

Thanks Sheba and thanks for replying.

It will be interesting to see if anyone else replies with similar experiences…
Hope the low carbing is working for you. I started in March and met some friends today who I haven't seen in the meantime. Their astonishment was a fantastic boost!

I was always regular and only on for about 3 days.....now they come every 3 weeks and am on for 7 days and get bad pains which I never got before too....I'm 45..I was wondering if it's the low carb or start of menopause.

Ooh I was about to ask about this - I've a contraceptive implant and haven't really bled for yonks but as soon as I started low carbing I've had sore boobs, bleeding and trouble spots. Will lurk with interest. (Am 42, btw).

I did low carbing for six months and noticed the same. It is something to do with insulin and insulin resistance and by regulating the levels with low carbing it somehow has this effect. I did read about it and can't remember where or the full scientific basis of the explanation.

Yep - Did a bit of googling and it seems that burning body fat releases stored oestrogen.

Hi - I'm 41 and have just started HRT due to entering the perimenopause early. Please take a look at the posts in the Health/Menopause section and you'll find a lot of really valuable information and some fantastically knowledgeable posters.

Fat cells hold oestrogen so if you've lost a significant amount weight then your oestrogen levels will fall and may make some menopausal symptoms more apparent.

Typical! Abso-bloody-lutely typical! I do something good for myself and I accelerate my biological ageing!
